Transformed a Harbor Freight Cheap Drill Press!

I've been buying a fair amount of WEN products from power tools (disc sander, track saw) and shop accessories (dial indicator and this 5/8 MT2 keyless chuck) - I am surprisingly amazed at how this inexpensive accessory has transformed a sub-$60 underpowered, wobbly Harbor Freight drill press (#60238) into a notably different tool making it, at least for me, a pleasure to use. I have used it on mostly wood using Ryobi made forstner bits and average quality standard drill bits. I was quite skeptical about improving a low HP and underpowered 5-speed drill press. A complete tear down and evaluation of the parts (except for the motor) along with a runout test for a dial indicator made me believe that this tool is for basic non-critical drilling. Seeing a few posts on YT about folks trying to improve this drill, I researched replacement chucks (keyless) and matched the B16 taper to this WEB item. Based on cost and comparison to similar chucks 5-10 times the cost, I had low expectations. What a pleasant and unexpected surprise a 5-minute conversion from existing chuck and some test drilling. This sub-$30 item has been the best bang for the buck and raises my confidence in buying from this relative newcomer to a competitive market of tools now consolidated with a couple of owners (Red, Yellow, Grey, you know which ones I mean, all bought by huge corporations, none in the USA… check out protoolsreview.com). For the WEN chuck, it is heavy, well machined, smooth in operation, and well packed and delivered without any damage. I did not use a dial indicator to check accuracy because for my needs, the fact that the hole drilled nicely accepted a corresponding insert, whether dowel, bench dog or other part was good enough! I recommend it without hesitation. If you are a hobbyist like me and bought a bottom of the barrel 8" drill press like the HF #60238 with B16 spindle taper, do yourself a favor and spend the $30 on this chuck, you cannot go wrong and you will be amazed at how your experience with the drill press changes.

Upgrade for drill press

As other reviewers have written, a good upgrade for a 25 year old drill press. I didn't need .00001 accuracy. It far exceeds the old wore out original. Nice to see the drill points spinning true again and I don't have to HUNT FOR THE CHUCK KEY any more. It was good purchase for my application and equipment.

I haven' used it much but when I have it runs true when boring any holes large or small so far..

Quality is just fair

I bought one of these a year ago, and didn't use it for several months. When I did, I found it very difficult to get a drill centered in it because the Jaws were very sloppy and didn't close evenly. Recently I decided it had to be defective, and ordered a new one because the price is right, but checked it immediately. Well this one was even a little worse, not only are the Jaws sloppy, the were binding about half way through their range. I have bought 6 keyless chucks in the last several years, and all the others work fine. In fairness they were $10-$15 more expensive than this one. So I recommend spend a little more and be happy you did. PS, I've been happy with the chucks sold by Shars

Dollar for Dollar, this was a steal of a deal. Of course, I won't know the long term results for awhile. Anyway, my drill press spindle arbor taper has a .0003" runout (for being a HF cheapy, it's truly impressive). The WEN MT2 adapter runs at .0008" where it meets the chuck, so that's pretty good if you ask me. I mounted a 1/4" carbide end mill blank in the chuck and checked that. About 1/2" below the chuck it has a .0015" TIR, 3" below the chuck it was .003" TIR...of course, the further out from the bearings, the more exaggerated the runout becomes. Not to shabby wouldn't you say? I'm curious what runout others have gotten. Sometimes inexpensive products can really be hit or miss.

Poorly machined, uneven

Chuck jaws are machined unevenly, and also close unevenly. I will be sending it back.

Excellent replacement for drill press chuck

The chuck is very accurate- 0.002" runrout on my example- and easy to tighten and loosen without tools.
