Magnets, how do they work??
When I ordered this product amazon did not provide a shipping estimate for a few days and I had no idea when they might ship. They did arrive a week after purchase, so shipping time was normal. The major problem that popped up immediately is that the packaging in the photo shows six magnets and the instructions refer to six magnets, but my package (sealed) arrived with just four. Other spoke magnets can be bought here on amazon, but come on, I shouldn't have to do that. There's a little paragraph of directions on the back of the package in English and German, but it is fairly useless. Fortunately the process is easy enough. The brackets (plastic, with a plastic screw adjustment piece) attach to the bike frame and the lights are bolted to the brackets. The little cylindrical magnets have a backing piece that screws off and sandwiches over a spoke. Then there's a bit of adjustment necessary to find the sweet spot where the magnets will pass close enough to the light to activate it. Mount it too high, close to the tire and the spoke will be too far away when it passes. Takes probably 20-40 minutes to install and adjust, depending on how mechanically inclined one is feeling. Tools needed are at least a flat screwdriver, but preferably a flat and a phillips. The lights themselves are plastic and lightweight. I would not want my bike to fall over on its side while they are mounted because I don't know how much impact they can take. I may have to be careful not to smack the lights when I carry the bike up and down the stairs to my apartment. The lights activate when the magnets pass with sufficient speed. Too slow and there's no light. The faster the wheel turns, the brighter and more frequent the flashes. If I had three magnets on the wheel instead of two, I would have a higher flash rate, possibly approaching a constant on, but two seems adequate. There does not seem to be a capacitor (or I have not played with it enough to activate it) so when the wheel stops, the light stops. I really like the concept of magnetic induction lights. The benefits are obvious - no batteries to buy and nothing to charge. I wanted a set of Reelights SL120 (flashers with a capacitor so they continue to blink when stopped) but they mount at the wheel hub and I detach my front quick release wheel frequently, plus a front disc brake that would get in the way without the expensive longer mounting brackets. This set has the advantage of mounting on the frame, so the brake type doesn't matter and I can attach/detach my wheel as I please. It's hard to judge the brightness of the light because close to the solstice we have nearly 24 hour days in Alaska. I can see it flash and there is one large LED bulb in there. The surrounding reflector (about 2" diameter) is nice. I think they will be good daylight/dusk lights, especially for alerting other cyclists and pedestrians on the bike trails I use most of the time. I am not expecting them to be my only night lights - I will be adding at least a bright steady headlight. Will update the review as needed. I'd give the set 3.5 stars if they'd let me. Minus one star for 2 missing magnets and minus a half star for cheepish plastic mounting brackets and poor directions. It is still two lights for less than 40 bucks with no fuss of batteries or charging.

Flashing light
It was a little tricky finding the best spot to mount the light. It needed to be close enough for the magnet on the spokes without interfering with the operation of the bike. It took me a while to realize the clicking sound I heard wasn't from the light activating but the spokes rubbing against the plastic strap on the light. The front light was destroyed in a freak event when a gust of wind blew a cardboard box into the front wheel. It must have pushed the light into the spoke because when I looked down, the back half of the light was missing.

Truly battery free & pretty easy to install.
These "hey see me lights" are great for anyone who might be cycling in low light or at night. They don't replace a good headlight, but I wouldn't put a bike on the road without them. Because they don't require batteries, there's no need to worry that they won't work when needed. The set comes with 2 magnets for each light, so you can set it to give a really fast flash rate or even a double flash pattern with more of a pause between them. Not to difficult to install, though the magnets need a bit of patience to get adjusted to the right position. No doubt these belong on every bike in any house.

As was reviewed before, the description of the package showed 6 magnets included. However only 4 were in my package. The lights will hopefully allow other traffic to be aware of your presence but would be better if they had the ability to continue to work for a limited time when stopped; for traffic or a stop sign. If you ride in poorly lit areas you will still need lighting that will enable you to see any obstructions in the road ahead.

Good price.
Instructions to install were more than vague.

I thought this would be a great backup on night biking. I have battery operated front and back but you never know when they will give out.

Physics Lights - Faraday would be proud
Awesome! Physics at work right here. If you want to ensure a strong connection make sure to check the solder points inside the lights. Then seal it up (water resistant) with some black electrical tape! Even works in the MN winter.
