Morse taper jacobs chuck
Fast delivery. Good chuck for drilling.

A little crunchy
Runs surprisingly true, but not very smooth to open and close. There was a lot of oil and swarf on the chuck when I opened the box. Cleaned it out the best I could, but it feels like there still might be something hiding under one of the jaws. It’s nice to be able to use a 1/4-20 drawbar for headstock boring on the lathe.

Morse taper permanently connected to chuck
I wanted a chuck which could be removed from the taper rod. It would have made it easier to use the chuck on some other tools but it works ok on my lathe and drill press. Also it does not have a hole in the taper piece to ease removal when it is stuck in a tool.

Product Great. Delivery not so much.
My only dislike of this product is it is huge. It protrudes from the tail stock quite a bit. The keyed ones do too though. It does stick a bit sometimes when opening the jaws but not all the time.

Works great with my WEN 4214
Bought this to replace the keyed chuck in my WEN 4214. Fits and works great! Be advised, it comes with no instructions so do research on installation first. Thankfully, I knew what I was doing, so install took about 15 minutes. Remove old chuck, affix the new included spindle to the new chuck with a few hammer strikes, then install the new assembly into the drill press with a few hammer strikes. Just make sure to wipe everything down with a good degreaser because the new parts come coated with oil. One thing I noticed was the new spindle was a little different than the old spindle. The new one was flat on top and about 1/2” shorter. The original spindle top was slotted on top, like a flat head screwdriver. Because the new spindle is shorter, none of it is exposed in the disassembly window of the drill press, so if I ever have to remove it, it will be a little harder, but not a big issue.

Only Accurate Enough for Woodworking
Maybe I got a bad example of this chuck, but mine has unacceptable run-out (wobble). Before assembling the chuck to the arbor, I checked the run-out of the arbor in my lathe head-stock and it ran almost perfectly true, with run-out less than .0003 inches, which is quite good. After cleaning the oil off of both pieces with alcohol, I assembled the chuck onto the arbor, and re-installed he arbor-chuck assembly into the same lathe head-stock. When I started the lathe, the chuck wobble could be seen by eye, and measured .007 inches. I realize this is an inexpensive chuck, but from the average 4.5 star review, I was hoping for better. Perhaps I got a bad copy. Fortunately, it seems as if the hole in the back of the chuck is off center, rather than out of parallel, because runtout at the end of a 6-inch length of 1/2-inch drill rod held in the chuck reads about the same runout at the far end. This makes it useable, but I will only be able to use this chuck for clearance drilled holes in metal, or for holes in wood. Recognizing those limitations, the price isn't too bad. The chuck mechanism does turn smoothly by hand. Too bad about the run-out. I have to give three stars because it's good enough to use on my wood lathe. A few other reviewers have mentioned putting the arbor in the freezer to shrink the arbor before assembly. This is not a good idea, and is not necessary. A home freezer can lead to condensation of tiny water droplets into the pores of the metal, which will cause rust. Good industrial practice is to chill with liquid nitrogen or dry ice. The only thing necessary to install a properly machined arbor into a properly machined chuck is to carefully clean all of the oil/grease off both parts with alcohol. Then it only takes a firm tap to get a tight seat. Set the chuck body (not the jaws) on a wood support, and a couple of firm taps the back end of the arbor with a brass hammer.

Stuck
The chuck was jammed in the open position from the factory. Could not get it to open or close. Completely frozen. Called PSI and after 3 calls was finally able to get to a human (Ken). He took my email address and said they would send out another one. We will see. If it comes through, I will update my review, however. PSI is not impressing me thus far. UPDATE!! UPDATE!! Received a phone call from Todd in customer service. He confirmed my information and said they were sending out another chuck. It arrived today and it works flawlessly. So , all in all, I have no complaints with PSI as this was a manufacturing defect. I would purchase from them again

A Nice Lathe Accessory
This is a decent quality keyless chuck, that's great for hobby use but not quite salty enough for professional use. I've used Albrecht before, and this ain't it. But, it's a tiny fraction of the cost of an Albrecht, and will give most woodturners nothing less than excellent performance. It doesn't run as perfectly true as say, a real Jacobs brand keyed chuck, but it's not bad either. Fit and finish are very nice, with a clean, professional appearance and no burrs or irregularities. With a light twist of the wrist to the sleeve to snug it down onto the drill shank, it grips securely enough for twist, forstner, and brad point drills under say, 5/8" diameter. Bigger drills, especially big spade drills, will try to turn in the chuck unless you put some "big arm elbow grease" one, with a deliberate, two-handed twist. Both closure and opening are smooth and clean, with a nice, tight feel and very little backlash in the mechanism. The big plus here is that you don't need a key.

Holds the bit well. Good size range. Not too accurate.
The run-out on mine is 0.0075" right at the chuck. Obviously it will be more the lower you measure which makes drilling holes on the smaller side wobble all over the place. Fine for anything 1/4" and up if you punch a mark for a guide. Unsure if I would be purchasing one for the tailstock of my little lathe. The components were gritty. I used solvent and washed out a bunch of what appears to be soot. After adding some thin way lube oil it tightens and loosens quite smoothly. Still out of round, though, and no, my spindle is not out. I measured that at <0.0005".

Great bang for the buck
6 months of use and here's my report. Not really machinest grade but fantastic for woodworking. Huge range of hold, easy to install and uninstall when you need something different. Good holding strength. Haven't had any bits slip. Highly recommend for anyone that does mostly soft metals and wood working.

Nice quality but short M.T.
Nice quality with chuck providing good drill grip. The only issue I have is with the length of the tang (or lack there of) at the end of the Morse taper which make removal from my tail stock and drill press difficult. To remedy this I added a small threaded screw (not sure of the size I used) to the back end of the taper.

Has a good weight to it and seems to be respectably true
Really liking this chuck, hasn't lost grip or jammed at all with about 50 changes so far. Has a good weight to it and seems to be respectably true. For the $ it's a good tool to have. Keep in mind, there is a seperate MT3 To JT33 arbor separate from it included in the package...I had thought it was all one piece or screwed in place so I ordered an adapter for a different chuck that I didn't need.

Absolutely love this chuck.
I use this to drill pen blanks and works like a charm without having to search for a chuck key. Was a bit worried about the hold but it hugs bits very tight with only moderate tightening force. Great buy.
