Everyone wants the best and that is why I choose THULE

This product is very simple and convenient. When you have the hitch rack you have to make sure that you aren’t going to loose your rack and the bikes that you are transporting on them as well so the first thing that you think of is THULE!!! I have been reading all the reviews on this product and people have been complaining about the price and you can make it for cheaper but in all honest why did these people buy them? Its because of the name. No one would probably want anything less especially if you are able to afford it. Everyone wants the best and that is why I choose THULE. I had the racks for my truck and I loved the look of them and they did the job but yes they were super expensive compared to other brands but I didn’t want to hustle with other racks that would potentially breaking so I stuck with THULE and I loved it and they are a good brand but it isn’t expensive. So with that being said I will always choose THULE unless someone can talk me other wise. You are paying for the brand but look at it this way that is how you would choose your car or your computer or TV it’s the same concept, the buyer is going to buy the brand that they like. Over all yes this product is good and you can probably make your own but these guys to me know what they are doing and specialize in these products so for me I will leave it up to the knowledgeable people and stick with THULE

Easy to install

Easy to install and so far so good. The screw keeps the bike rack sturdy in the receiver and I was able to put 3 bikes on my rack without it wobbling all over the place. Easy to lock and unlock. I would Recommend!

Poorly made and Thule does not back their products

I dropped the lock on garage floor while installing bike rack, the plastic outer case broke and Thule would not repair or replace the case. The case should be made of materials that don't Crack and break under normal use.

Fit perfectly and although expensive, having the correct lock makes a difference

I attempted to use a third party lock and the nut would screw all the way into the opening so my bike rack did not feel fully secure. With the Thule nut it screwed in all the way and the only movement I can notice is slightly up and down, but no side to side. So I am much more confident that my bikes will not be moving much while driving in the freeway or for long distances.

Had to buy a replacement lock

Somehow lost the lock that originally came with the Thule bike rack, which had worked satisfactorily for several years. Was very disappointed that the lock couldn’t be purchased separately from the bolt assembly and the total replacement “package” seemed very pricey to me. But other reviewers seemed to have had only mixed success with DIY parts or buying alternate manufacturers’ mechanisms. So I bit the bullet and paid the big price because I just feel the bike rack is more secure with the lock attached. My experience is Thule makes reliable products.

A worthwhile product with some caveats

The product fit the Thule 4 bike rack. A couple of warnings about installing the locking bolt. I would suggest dabbing the threads with loctite . We took a 2000 mile trip with 2 mounted bikes. The locking bolt vibrated loose after 1000 miles. I called Thule and they FedEx a new bolt. I installed it with loctite. After that we didn't have have any issues with the bolt. On our trip we encountered some strong winds the bikes stayed securely tight however the mounting pads on which the bikes rest have a tendency to slide on the mounting arm. So on the to trip and return trips the bikes had shifted to one side about 4 inches. They stayed secured but had shifted a little close to back window (SUV). Thule should consider screwing the mounting pads to the arm The locking bolt kit I bought was OK however the dust/mud cover which protects the keyhole is Chinzy. The cover falls off.

Great Security For Bike Rack

Purchased mainly to enhance the very short bolt that came with our Thule bike rack - it seemed simply too short to be secure. This has the added bonus of locking the bike rack to your hitch so in the even there's a very determined thief they cannot march off with your bike rack. Highly recommend whether you want it for security or for a more secure installation!

Rip off for a cheap lock

Bought the Thule Vertex 4 Swing rack. Thule should have included a lock with the overpriced bike rack. Instead they thought to reach deeper into your pocket and gouge you again. From reading all the info on alternatives, the general feeling is that the threads on the lock bolt is specialized for the thule rack and cannot be substituted. from other people's suggestion, I bought the locking bolt from Thule for $7 (part# 8535917). I tried to find a lock that would fit the end of the bolt but I must say that Thule did a good job preventing us from finding something that matched. I tried some Master locks but none worked properly. I finally stumbled across a bike lock from Canadian Tire that worked nicely. I cut the bike cable and just used the lock. The bike lock was $10 so a total of $17 versus $69. Also, the lock is ok but if a thief really wanted to steal your bike rack, this will not prevent it but then again neither would the Thule lock. This just discourages the opportunity thief. Search in CanadianTire website for Supercycle Bike Key Lock. Thule, stop trying to gouge your customers!! 2017-01-27 : Patrick was kind enough to comment that he found a bike lock at Dollarama for $2.50 which is even cheaper! Thanks Patrick!

Check your clearance!

On one of my vehicles the lock interferes with the trailer electrical outlet. On the other it’s a tight fit. The lock cylinder’s size and the fact that the key enters into the end can make locking and unlocking a tight squeeze if your electrical connector is nearby. As the bolt threads into the bike rack, it can’t be flipped around and inserted the other way (my Thule rack is only threaded on one side). This also means that it may not work with non threaded racks. If it fits, it’s a decent lock, though pricey for what it is.

It's works.

What did I dislike? The cost. This is quite expensive. You have to use a Thule locking hitch pin when you have a Thule rack. I thought I could get by with a different manufacturer locking hitch pin but it appears that each have their own proprietary thread that matches the rack. What do I like? It is very well made so should last a long time. Which really means quality and you get quality with Thule.

Don’t waste your money!!

I an extremely disappointed with this product. I purchased the item in September and although it was easy to install, the lock mechanism is very cheaply made. I went to unlock it after having it on the car less than 2 months. First the plastic lock cover just snapped off and then the key wouldn’t open the lock. As a result, I had to take my car to a shop to have it removed as they weren’t able to open with the key either. I am apparently unable to return the defective product as the window for return has expired and am now out an additional $107 to have it removed. I hadn’t expected anything like this given Thule is supposed to be a reputable brand!!

This does what is advertised, locks my rack to my hitch receiver, however, the pin itself is very long and through my receiver by a solid 2 inches. It screws in tight so the rack doesn't sway but them the lock is now sitting and inch away from the receiver simply swaying on the pin. Also there is exposed pin so if someone really wanted to they could cut that and this would be useless. Seems they should have made the pun shorter so the lock is snug against the hitch receiver...i have a standard 2 inch receiver, would be even worse in a smaller one.
