Having trouble extending the string. Followed the manual, but it's not working. UPDATE!
Please read my initial review below. I was having trouble extending the string. The automatic string extender was not working. When I pushed the black "thing," the string did not extend. I knew I had done something, but I didn't know what. Today a friend of mine was able to remove the old string and replace it with the spare that comes in the box. VOILA! EVERYTHING WORKS! The problem was that I hadn't put on the "edge guide." The "edge guide" is listed in the parts, but there is no specific instruction to put it on. It's pretty obvious, but to a novice, not so much. I weed-whacked without the "edge guide" and tangled up and cut the string. Today my friend was able to take off the old spool and put in the "spare" spool. With the "edge guide" on the trimmer, the string did not cut off. Afterward, I again followed the instructions to turn on and off the trimmer to extend the string, and it WORKED! For the heck of it, I pushed that little black "thing" on the side, and was able to pull the string manually! All good! Notice some reviews are saying the trimmer is heavy or heavier than expected. No, it's not. It's a trimmer. The positioning of a trimmer is awkward, but it's not heavy. But that's any trimmer. Greenworks is the easiest trimmer I've ever used. And as you might be able to tell, I've been through a lot of trimmers. I upped my rating to five stars. Lightweight; easy maneuverability. Even after following the owner's manual, still cannot adjust the string length. The owner's manual says the string adjusts automatically when you turn the trimmer on for 3-5 seconds and then turn it off for three to five seconds. NOPE! NOT HAPPENING! As per the owner's manual, I repeated the process several times. No change. Then, I thought I'd take off the housing and put in a new cartridge of string. SILLY ME! I pressed the two sides and tried to lift it, turn it, anything. NOTHING! I have the Greenworks snowblower and lawn mower, both of which work great, but this trimmer is a challenge.

Greenworks 40V string trimmer
This is a powerful trimmer. I have not had double-sided line and there is a difference. Not sure about battery power. It is not lightweight but seems to be balanced. There is a bracket enclosed that you could rig a shoulder strap to. I plan on doing this next- taking the one off my old trimmer. Some people complain about the tough safety button you have to depress to be able to use the machine- this is valid! I set about trying to turn it off but came up with a better solution! Take all the screws out on the right side of the housing (some of the screws are very deep in) but once they are all loose you can pry it half open. The black cover keeps you from taking it all the way off- don't worry about that- look in to where the triggers are and you will see the spring you see in the enclosed picture- TAKE IT OUT. The safety button is now VERY much easier to press and will not fatigue your thumb. You're welcome! Update: This trimmer uses .065" line. You will need to buy replaceable "cartridges" or have that size line on a spool. There are YT videos to instruct winding the lines- it doesn't look totally easy but i am determined to use the line I have bought! The battery seems fine and definitely lasts for all of the trimming I have to do around my 2 acre property. My old B&D trimmer would take two batteries worth of power, a pain to change since you are always the furthest distance from your 2nd when it dies.. I rigged up a shoulder harness as well. Just took it off my B&D and put the bolt through the bracket that is on the Greenworks shaft above the black handle. Makes it much easier on the back when adjusted properly!

Yes recommend with one caveat.
Main reason I chose this unit was to be compatible with the battery of my Greenworks leaf blower. Wanted to be able to swap batteries and use the same charger. I upgraded to a 40-volt and very happy I did. More power and lasts longer. Another reason this unit is a dual line vs. single line. This is my first battery weed eater. I would not call this a light weight weed eater compared to some of the others on the market so be mindful. If weight your major priority then be sure to pick one up at the store first. To me the weight is not a problem at all. My problem / caveat is the thumb safety button. This thing is crazy hard to keep pushed in and small so your thumb keeps falling off. Greenworks, if you monitor these comments you MUST correct this. With that said what I did after seeing another comment was to do a modification. That person removed the spring. What I did was remove the button entirely. Either way this is a very easy fix.

NIce string trimmer , good quality !
Greenworks makes some good string trimmers once you figure out what one you want, lot of choices. I have had another one for several years but it was a single line model and was heavy to work with. This one is 2 line and is easy to work with Also easy to put together. Battery life should be good and to keep weight down i would recommend the 2AH Review update:! I used this yesterday and was pleased with how well it worked. The unit is not light and seems to be balaced as well as can be expected, the issue with the button on the side is true but not a game changer tad bit hard to engage but manageable
