Good chalk but…

The chalk is great but every piece arrived broken so keep that in mind. Its still usable for what I need it for but don’t expect to have long pieces of chalk—I guess that’s expected when fragile things have to ship.

Quality chalk, Improved packaging!

To begin, this is excellent quality chalk. It writes smoothly, it does not break under normal writing conditions, it generates little dust, and it erases more easily than most other brands. Frankly, this is by far the best chalk I have found for writing on classroom blackboards. I give five stars for the chalk itself. However, two stars were removed because the packaging was disgraceful. I ordered three boxes of chalk, and they arrived packed in a cardboard packing sleeve, loose with no padding. Upon opening the package I found only 13 intact sticks of chalk, 18 half sticks, and the rest was comprised of uselessly short bits of chalk. At the steep price of nearly $5 per dozen, what are we paying for if not careful packaging? If you can find this chalk at a local store, buy it. If you can only find it here, think twice. Update: Amazon.com will not accept returns for this product even though it is Prime enabled. Factor that into your purchase as well. UPDATE (October 20th, 2017): I Purchased the colored chalk assortment recently, and it came in a padded packing sleeve. Only one of the twelve sticks were broken upon arrival - I will be changing my rating from 3 to 4 stars.

Finally, the search for (almost) perfect chalk is over!

Of all the chalk brands I have tried (Crayola Nontoxic Anti-Dust Chalk, White, 12 Sticks/Box (50-1402) ,Blackboard Chalk ), Sargent is certainly the best. The other brands are more suited to be sidewalk chalks, not so great for blackboards. These other brands make awful scratchy sounds when writing, and they are so hard that they damage the blackboards if you apply enough pressure to make your writing legible. Enter Sargent Art chalks to solve your blackboard chalk writing needs! They are soft and smooth to write with, the way blackboard chalk should be. As other reviewers noted, some of the sticks did arrive broken. But Amazon is getting better at shipping them, only a few sticks were broken, nothing as bad as what some other reviewers posted with the entire box arriving in tiny unusable pieces. Given the choice, I will choose chalk that can be used for writing and might occasionally break over hard chalk that won't break but can't be used for the purpose it's made for - writing!

This is really good chalk!

I never thought I'd give a rave review for anything as ordinary as chalk, but this stuff is excellent. The "dustless" chalk I was using was soft, crumbly, and wouldn't make a clean line. Worst of all, it was dusty. The Sargent chalk, on the other hand, is firm, dustless, and draws a strong, clear line. Get the good stuff - this is it!

Yes! Finally a chalk that actually works!

As an educator teaching primary children I have never been thrilled with Expo boards where little hands can get a hold of markers and write on my walls. Chalkboards are what I learned on and what I prefer. However, finding good quality chalk nowadays is quite the feat! I have frequented all types of different chalks. They were either too dusty, too breakable or didn't leave a distinct mark on the board, more of a faded line. After a couple of frustrating years trying to find one that actually writes well on a board I bought a box of Crayola Chalks. Crayola is a great brand for paints and crayons but they miss their mark with their chalk. It doesn't write well on the board at all. It squeaks, skips, and breaks very easily. Sargent Art was my last hope. It met all of my expectations. It is dustless, wonderful to write with (it practically glides from my fingers), the marks are thick and bright and doesn't break easily. It also wipes away from my board with great ease. Most other chalks take a few strong wipes to even start to vanish. This time let go of the name brand and trust Sargent Art. You won't be disappointed!

Chalk

I have been looking for good chalk because I can't use any and every kind of chalk. This chalk is wonderful, I love it. The only reason why I didn't give it a five star is because the company that sent it does a lousy job. The packing is terrible, because this chalk arrived in pieces. Some of the chalk was left whole but most of it was in pieces. That's not the chalk itself but the company that does the packing. It should be protected better. Maybe put that paper that has the bubbles to protect the chalk so that while this chalk is being transported it will bump around but won't break because it will have good cushion. This company should check into better wrapping and packaging. But again, overall the chalk is great.

My mother gave me an old wooden chalkboard to hang in the kitchen that says 'Scene de Provence - Lavande, Olivier, Ail'. I assume that has something to do with France and food. Anyways, because the chalkboard is so darn cute, I hung it up by the side door and I have started writing what is for dinner on this nightly with this chalk. This chalk writes well. It is on the harder side as far as chalks go. This is good for writing in cursive - the stick maintains a sharp edge as you write. I use a wet paper towel to wipe off the board when I am done. Nothing annoys me more than chalk dust from erasers. I am happy with this purchase and at this point, I probably have enough chalk to write for a year. Thanks!

The great white chalk!

(+) Stick ergonomy is perfect. You can do drawings on pavement with it. You can break one in two and share with a friend creative moments. It writes on blackboard stuff not to forget like your wife birthday present. (-) Leave a dusty white residue on fingers (duh.)

Easy to write with.

Writes really well on my self-made blackboard using chalkboard paint. One nitpick: breaks immediately when you drop it, even from child's hand height.

Dustless and came in not broken

The only thing that sucks is that these are add-on items so you have to wait to get these. Other than that, they are indeed dustless, write just fine on the blackboard and get the job done without making me sneeze. The item came perfectly intact and protected by crumpled paper. For about $1 each pack of 12 it's hard to go wrong.
