Stripped Gears Upon Arrival?

UPDATE Jan. 10, 2019: First off, I want to congratulate Amazon on its exceptional customer service. I returned the defective reel and had the replacement within two days. No questions asked. I had the opportunity to try the reel out on the ice yesterday and was very pleased with its' performance. I caught a large trout and found the cranking power and the drag to be very good. The drag was easy to adjust and it performed smoothly. The free spool was sluggish even with the adjustment all the way out. I do not believe this to be a reel defect- I think it was due to cold temperature and viscous grease/oil in the bearings and the stiff monofilament i was using because the spool spun like crazy in the warm house. If this is a concern, flush the bearings and use a lighter lube. The only issue I found with the replacement reel was that the screw holding the eva knob to the handle was so loose, I almost lost the knob. I've raised my rating to three stars. I considered a higher rating but it appears from my two experiences, quality control is lacking. Original Post: I really wanted to like this reel- it was the right size, right price, with two handle options. Feels good in the hand. But, when trying to spool the reel with mono, the reel acted like it was going in and out of gear accompanied by a grinding noise. I made sure the free spool button was all the way out but this made no difference, nor did adjusting the drag or adjusting the free spool tension. The reel acts like the gears are stripped and are intermittently engaging. The spool's side-to-side free play looks fine, the bearings are not loose and the spool (when in free spool) spins "forever". I decided to take a chance and have Amazon send me a replacement hoping that I just got a lemon. If the next reel behaves the same way, I'll conclude that this reel is junk and I'll strongly recommend against purchasing it.

I used the reel for ice fishing this past season and it worked just as I expected. The only problem I encountered was I spooled too much line on the reel (100 yards). Because of the way the line lays on the spool it caused a few backlashes and tangles. Once I striped about 70 yards off and left about 30 yards on the reel it worked great. I never had another backlash or tangle the rest of the season. I plan on ordering another one of these reels for next ice fishing season.

Great Reel

Great real catch fish and get right back in the strike zone quickly.. free spool works great even with a very light jig. .. you do have to babysit it just a little so you don't get any backlashes but overall a great reel .. I would purchase another

This reel is a quality product and with utube instruction it can be converted to a right hand reel from left without any problem. The free spool adjustment on the side of the reel does not appear to do anything to adjust the free spool from running out with no resistance ---- therefore you must use one finger to stop line from running if the jig or lure hits the bottom, otherwise it will result in spool overrun and thus a tangle of loose line on the spool creating a mess. If this feature worked it would be a five star . Cannot understand why they sell a reel with an adjustment feature that does not work. Tried several times to make this adjustment work without any success -- (perhaps its there for a decoration The start drag works fine.

Ok reel.Good price and replacement was sent quickly

Never used this reel. Came unfunctional with a grinding noise when reeled. Got a replacement and seems to work better.

Star drag wheel flopping around

Right out of the box the star drag wheel was loose and flopping around on the shaft. I needed to use it right away so I placed a washer over the star drag wheel and that tightened it up. I don't think this is how it was designed to be. Also I prefer the longer reel seat so I changed it out from the short one (both are included). Could not adjust the drop rate very much but I use very light jigs. Frabil is usually very good stuff, I hope I just got one that slipped through QC.

Bent Handle

I received this reel with a bent handle. I was able to fix it, without too much of a problem. Other than that the reel works good.

Ok, maybe - edit : great

Straight out of the box it didn't work properly. Gear slips when handle is turned. Bait clicker only sounds when you turn the handle not when the drag is engaged . Gap between the spool and the reel cage is fairly large. Sent in for a replacement but im skeptical now that I have held this reel and taken a closer look. Ill update my review once I get a new one on the ice. Edit : they replaced with a new one and it came with a bent handle, so I sent it back for another. This one is actually a great reel . Clicker works , anti skate works , drops small jigs down super fast and retrieves them even faster. I recommend , just look it over before you head on the ice.
