Straight Up Truth - Good And Bad
TL;DR - These are good radios, and a solid buy. I'm not a HAM radio expert, and I didn't want to go through the trouble of learning a ton of information and obtaining a license just to be able to stay in touch with my family. So after a few hours of reading about specs and reviews for various walkie talkies on Amazon, I bit the bullet, pulled the trigger, and bought these radios Motorola Talkabout T402 Rechargeable Two-Way Radios (the two-pack). I was seriously considering the Baofeng walkie talkies which were cheaper, but they seem shady, illegal, and I couldn't get a straight answer from anyone as to whether they'd even be able to be programed to make them legal. Here's the BAD news about the Motorola walkie talkies: - The range isn't as advertised. It never is. Get over it. Every single one of these radio companies lies. They are dishonest, and intentionally lie about the capabilities of their radios in order to attempt to distinguish them from their competitors, and sell more radios. But see below. - The battery compartment sucks. You have to use a flathead screwdriver to open the compartment, and that is totally ridiculous given how often you'll have to swap out batteries if you run the radios hard on a backpacking or camping trip, or during an emergency. Not only does the fact that you have to use a screwdriver things bad, the screw itself is cut in s strange manner like a muffin top, so unless you have the perfect size flathead, you will slip out of the screw while trying to turn it. It's hard to explain, but you'll see. Royal pain in the butt and makes no sense from a design, engineering, or ergonomic/usability standpoint. - The faux metal-painted plastic trim is tacky and stupid. For no reason at all, there are two gold paint-colored plastic straps with the logo on them, and they should not exist at all or be straight-up plastic. They add weight and breakup what could otherwise be a nice profile for the hand. - You get two radios, but no charger. In my best Sam Sam Kinison voice, "Hmm, let's see: This wouldn't be a problem if I didn't buy the radios because THERE WILL BE PHYSICAL DISTANCE BETWEEN ME AND THE OTHER RADIO! How is the other person supposed to CHARGE THEIR RADIO if they are a mile away and WITHOUT A CHARGER!?" Hahaha! I mean, c'mon. There ought to be two chargers. Here's the GOOD news about the Motorola walkie talkies: + They are simple to use. I was able to switch channels and privacy codes and start testing the radios literally within seconds of having batteries installed, and without reading the manual. You simply turn the knob on the top, you'll hear and feel a nice click, adjust your volume to your liking, and then push the button to talk. + They have a nice feel to them with a solid plastic case, rubber buttons, and an easy-to-read display. The two stupid faux metal straps aside, they are otherwise pretty ergonomic and visually appealing. + Their range isn't nearly as bad as some of the angry reviews say. These people who say the radios were unusable on the highway even when following behind the other person on the radio? Yeah, those reviewers are straight-up lying. I don't know why, but that's impossible unless they were on the wrong channel. Hehehe. To make my point, I actually did a test with the radios around my neighborhood. None of the testing was done line of sight-- it was all through walls of a house, trees, and into/out of my car. At a mile, I was able to clearly transmit and hear the transmissions (0.8 miles, as the crow flies, to be exact, was as far as I tested). Now, I will say that I believe that's approaching the upper limit of what you can do with any obstructions. On the recording I made of my voice, I could hear the radio starting to break up a bit, but it was still clear-enough that I could make out every single word. But the idea that you might get 20+ miles out of these is a joke. Totally impossible. So why am I putting this in the "GOOD" list, because I personally only want these walkie talkies to be able to radio my young son when he's at his mom's house a mile away, and he's not old enough for a cell yet. I also think I'll use these with him for fun playing hide and seek. If you intend to use these for a commercial application or at distances over a mile or so, your mileage may vary (no pun intended). I hope you found this review helpful. Cheers, and stay in touch!

Can’t complain too much.
Bought the two-ways used, so what more can you I say. Not too bad for the price. If I had to do it all over again, I should have stuck with Midland.

Love these Radios, problem we were having has been resolved
We bought these radios as replacements for old (20 years at least) Motorola talkabouts that finally wore out. As our older Motorola talkabouts began to show age, a few years ago we bought some replacement walkie talkies in the lower price ranges and were VERY disappointed with the quality and range, and could not use them. So we now decided to try these higher cost Motorola Talkabouts in hopes that we could find a good replacement for our old Motorola talkabouts. We bought a set of two in October 2016, and a 2nd set of two in November 2016. We got both sets from Amazon warehouse deals. The first set just had very little damage to the packaging and appeared to never have been opened. The 2nd set had cut open packages and had appeared to be used. But with the extended Amazon Warehouse deals, we thought we would be fine. It is now February 2017. At first, we thought we had found a good replacement for our old Motorola Talkabouts. We liked the following features of these new walkie talkies: --We have kids ages 9 and 12 and the learning curve to use all of the Motorola radios is easy to master for that age group. --Very good range with our kids as they play at various homes in our neighborhood and when our family goes skiing. --Kids liked the call feature that has both sound and vibrate. --We liked the overall sturdiness of these radios. --In 4 months we have liked and had no problems with the rechargeable batteries. We also like the USB connectors, they take up a lot less space than older charging bases. --They seemed to work well in cold temperatures. We routinely used them while skiing in Michigan with 15-20 deg temperatures and had no issues except for one described below. However, now that the extended Amazon Warehouse deals warranty (3 month warranty) has ended we now have issues with these radios. Both of these issues are with the 2nd set that we purchased. Our problems are as follows: 1. In very cold temperatures, one time, one of the radios would not stop vibrating when it was called. We tried turning it on and off and it was still vibrating, even when turned off! We ended up taking the batteries out and it finally stopped. It seemed to "reset" worked fine after the batteries were taken out and put back in. We haven't had that issue again and have been back in the cold several times. I was glad we were home when this happened and not skiing because it would have been difficult to get a screwdriver and remove the battery cover if we had been skiing. 2. Now we have another issue with one of the radios. This radio is definitely part of the 2nd set I purchased, but I am not sure if it is the same one that had the problem described in #1 above or not. When we press the Mode, Menu, "+", "-", and Mon buttons the unit does a low pitch beep and the function does not work. The only button that still works on the front is the call button (with music note symbol.) The talk buttons on the side of the unit still work. I have tried taking the batteries out and this does not resolve the issue. I have tried to read the Motorola site and there doesn't seem to be any hints as to how to resolve this issue. If anyone has any ideas, feel free to comment on this post. UPDATE: Please see comments below. We had inadvertently activated the Lockout feature as described below. Now that is turned off, the radio is now working normally again. Right now, I am putting two stars on this purchase, because we really liked them until now. I can't send these back to Amazon, because I am just past the return window for Amazon Warehouse deals. Looks like I will need to send these back to Motorola for service. I will update this review as I go through that process. UPDATE: July 2017---Changed my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars. Please see comments below. The problem that we were having with our radios was actually the button lockout feature that we accidentally activated. Thanks to another Amazon customer who figured out our problem and posted solution (see comments below.) All 4 walkie talkies that we own are still working wonderfully. A couple of times I have accidentally left them on the charger more than the recommended time period, but so far at least, no issues with the batteries. My kids use these heavily during the summer while playing in our neighborhood and these work great up to 5 blocks away. Next winter, back to the ski slopes and if we have any future cold weather issues, I will update this post.

Rugged with good range.
We use these primarily to communicate with our kids while playing in our neighborhood. The battery life is great and they are very tough, rugged and easy to use. The sound quality is so-so but good enough. The maximum range that we have been able to use these is about 3/4 of a mile, with a bit of static. The flashlight is not very bright, but has come in handy a couple of times.

Seller isn't responsive
product isn't working and there isn't any return icon to return the product. Amazon is also not bothered although the co has tied up with the seller n not the buyer. Amazon is responsible if the seller isn't returning the product. Amzon will have to return the product n refund the amount.

This is Illegal to use in Singapore and the frequency on this walkie cannot be used locally.
Do not purchase this if you intend to use in Singapore
