CL320 - Decent but wish it could read higher DC current

I needed a clamp style meter to measure AC current for a project and constituted the purchase because my old (30+ year old non clamp) Micronta multi-meter was falling to pieces anyways. The CL320 worked well for my immediate need. Now six weeks later I realize that it can only read DC current via the probes up to 200mA. I couldn't even measure the current draw of some LED lights for my truck. Also the clamp is for AC current only... I've never looked into clamp meters before and bought this in a hurry so I didn't realize but it's not an issue, I just wish it could measure more DC current. Also it defaults to AC for most settings so the SEL button must be pushed to switch to DC after turning the dial to position. This must be geared towards AC electrical use. It's handy so no regrets but I'll probably be buying another meter for DC stuff too. Ultimately it's my fault for not scrutinizing all specifications closely when I was in a hurry.

A good quality clamp meter that measures AC and DC voltage.

My husband does a lot of work where a clamp meter is useful ... diy jobs around our home and teaching our eldest son the various aspects of electrical wiring around his home. He has been using this clamp meter whilst fitting lights, rewiring and even for some electrical jobs on his car. A clamp meter measures AC voltage and some can measure DC voltage. This one measures both AC and DC. This particular clamp meter from Klein Tools is really easy to use following the detailed instructions supplied. It is a very good quality clamp meter and has some very useful features. It comes with two test cables with safety caps, a storage case and instructions. This clamp meter takes 3 x AAA batteries which are not included. The clamp meter itself is a good size measuring 21.46 cm in length x 8.92 cm in width x 3.84 cm in height. It is ergonomically designed to feel comfortable in the hand and it's made from good quality robust materials. The LCD display is a good size and also has the advantage of having a back lit display ... so very useful in dark areas such as under a car bonnet, cupboards and the like. This back light can be turned on and off as needed. The functions of this clamp meter can be accessed easily using the central wheel ... you basically click the wheel onto your chosen function. There is also a little stand on the back of this unit which is useful if you want to use both hands as you can flip this out and then stand the meter on a flat surface. My husband is delighted with this clamp meter and it has earned its place of honour in his main and most used tool box.

High quality

I mean, I have put "high quality" in the title, you would pretty much demand that at this price, given that you can get a meter that would do most if not all of this for half the price or less. So why pay more? Well, I guess what it comes down to is "are you using this day to day?". Like a lot of tools, there's the cheap ones and the pro ones, and if you use them a lot you start to appreciate where the money has been spent to make it a bit more ergonomic here, a bit better tactile feedback on a dial there, a bit easier to read, a bit less shrill on the beeping, and so on. Essentially the design and construction are more refined. I also quite like how the whole thing fits comfortably in the bag, normally with these things you struggle to get it in, and the wires are all over the place, but it seems like theyve managed to make it somehow so you can just put it away within about 10 seconds without wrestling with it like a bag of snakes. The LCD is backlit (if you turn it on) and I had no issue reading it at any angle. The probes are well insulated with only the very tip poking out. Honestly I would never personally spend this much on a meter as an amateur but I could see it being worth it for a pro, I guess for us amateurs there's some cheaper ones in the range. I guess my one gripe is that for the money it doesn't do any kind of 'leakage current stuff' that I can see. If you find yourself trying to diagnose tripping RCDs then good luck with that, you'll have to buy a dedicated clamp meter for that. Other than that, no issues.

Klein Tools CL320 Clamp Meter The product. This is a general purpose multi meter for multiple disciplines including electrical measurement and electronics. It comes with a soft case, test leads, batteries and thermocouple. It comes with basic multi-lingual instructions. Build quality. It is well made and the clamp has a very strong spring. The LCD is excellent and easy to read with backlighting for dark areas. It is an American designed and made meter. It has lots of overload features and is auto ranging on most inputs. Over the C220 it has many electronic component tests built in including diodes, capacitance. Accuracy is amazing even where tiny voltages are concerned. This is probably the only meter I will ever need. In use. It is a nice sturdy meter with excellent backlight for working in dim situations. It performs perfectly and is great for fault finding and power supply work on electronic devices. It will also be a great meter for automotive and general electrical work. Overall. A very accurate and useful clamp meter. Good build and very accurate. It has so many built in trances and functions it’s probably the only meter you will ever need. No problems recommending this product.

No doubt about the 5 stars.

Not being an electrician I'd not experienced or even heard of Klein Tools before. I've had a couple of multimeters which I'd use for DIY projects. I've had a contactless voltage tester before too. If I was to strap these previous items together it still wouldn't touch this by a mile. My previous gear has now been paled into insignificance by the Klein Tools CL320 and I'll tell you why. My contactless voltage tester would vary dangerously on it's results, whereas this is (as it damn well should be) spot on. My last multimeter would never settle on a reading like this and it was cheaply made too, so the test leads' insulation came off the pins and the screen has faded. With this it does all those did, it does it better, easier, is easier to read and it does more too! I've yet to learn more functions on it but it's nice to know it will. I've a friend that's an electrician and mentioned it to him. It turns out he has a few Klein Tools items. I take that as a good sign. The whole thing feels quality. I've not found any failings in it and therefore had no problem clicking 5 stars across the board.

Professional and accurate.

Superb clamp meter, good range of features and sturdily made. Well designed to be operated with good efficiency, easy to hold and to operate even with your non primary hand, I prefer this as I can jot down measurements with my right hand at the same time. The screen is super easy to see, the back light works well. The markings around the dial are bold and easy to see and the dial positively clicks into each setting. The cables are very good quality. There are times when it is just not safe or convenient to use probes, some situations call for a clamp metre. This one is accurate and safe. We have ancient wiring that is erratic in unit use from day to day. We need to work out why, this meter will be a big help. My partner has an hnd in electronics and says this is one of the best test meters of its kind. The included case is good quality and serves to keep everything together and protected. Definitely professional quality.
