Worth The Money
UPDATE: The video included at the top of this Website for this product is wrong. In the video, the person demonstrating how to set up this CO2 drop checker adds several drops - more than the recommended 5, yet does not add aquarium water. You are supposed to fill the drop checker with 5 drops of reagent fluid, then add some 4DKH fluid to until you reach the line in the drop checker's cap. The video is going to give you the wrong results. Earlier.. Since the sole purpose of a CO2 drop checker is to ensure that your plants are getting an adequate amount of CO2 in your aquarium, while not gassing your fishes, it's important to stress function over form when looking to purchase a CO2 drop checker. CO2 drop checkers have only become popular with fish-keepers over the past few years. And then, only with those who maintain planted aquaria that uses some form of injected CO2. Either pressurized or DIY by the fermentation method. When I first decided to get a CO2 drop checker I was tempted by the more expensive ones on the market, such as the drop checkers from ADA and Cal Aqua Labs. CAL offers some beautiful looking CO2 drop checkers if you want to spend between $35 and $50. However, in this fish-keeper's opinion, a $10 CO2 drop checker will do just as good a job as a $50 CO2 drop checker, provided that you use 4 DKH solution in place of your tank water, as a starting point with your CO2 drop checker. It's also important to replace the 4DKH fluid on a regular basis as it is with the reagent liquid that you add to the 4 DKH fluid, if you are to obtain accurate readings from your CO2 drop checker. UP Aqua offers a nice drop checker for the money. And if you have several planted aquaria as this fish-keeper does, you can have about 5 UP Aqua CO2 drop checkers for the price of one of CAL's top line checkers. In support of the CAL CO2 drop checkers I do have to say that they really look nice. However, I think I'll stay with the UP Aqua.

It works... I think
I am new to planted aquariums and want to get it right before I introduce my office betta to his vacation bachelor pad at home. I got this because I have a DIY CO2 system. When the kit arrived the solution was not sealed well and a bit of a mess. I got it all cleaned up, got my tank water into the cup, dropped five and placed it. It was really easy actually, not as awkward as expected. I definitely did not have enough CO2 in the tank. So I added a second bottle and that is when it started changing from the green tinged blue. I got it in the light green almost yellow area. But the solution bottle leaks! I did a 50% water change because I had a dying Horn Wort issue. I've reset the drop checker: cleaned the clear indicator portion, etc. and it was easy. I am worried about the solution though. Since the bottle doesn't seal well it got all over the plastic bag I placed it in, with a lot of the orangie color not still in suspension, a bit stained my fingers. Is it still good? Just in case I ordered a bottle of just the solution. Hopefully it arrives in tact with no mess. Fingers crossed. My little buddy comes to see his home aquarium later this week.

Junk Suction Cup and slow to respond
Compared to my beloved Red Sea drop checker this one is garbage. The suction cup detaches at least twice a month. I'll just come home and find the thing floating in the tank and all the indicator solution drained into the tank. Not something I want to keep doing over and over! Also in a side by side test this indicator is much much slower to respond to changes in CO2...by several hours. I think this has to do with the size of the opening (this one being a very small slot and the Red Sea being a larger hole). This restricts air exchange which is what makes these things work. Overall if you can find a better suction cup it's an ok drop checker and infinitely better than the Fluval garbage I wrote another review about, but I still wish I could find more Red Sea ones...they're harder to find than snowmen in the desert these days.

Does what it says on the tin.
This is kind of a hard product to get wrong, considering how simple it is, so I wasn't surprised when it worked. The hardest part was mixing the proper kH reference solution to fill it with. This wasn't hard (baking soda and water), but it would have been nice if the included instructions described the process, rather than adding the indicator solution to a sample of tank water. Using 4 dkH reference solution will give you more accurate results than tank water, and is pretty easy to do if you have a kH test kit (like this oneAPI KH (CARBONATE HARDNESS) TEST KIT . ) After adding the reference solution and indicator, I flipped it over and put it in the tank. It remained green. Hmm. Does it work? I turned off my co2 system for 24 hours. It turned blue. So far so good. Ever the scientist, I then cranked the system up. After a few hours, the indicator turned a yellowish-green. I backed off, pointed a powerhead at the surface to off-gas some of the extra co2. It turned back to green. Looks good to me.

slowly Indicates general pH
Pros: these actually give you general pH after slow adjustment constantly monitor pH enough to know if it is too low or high Cons: Unlike using bromothymol blue, which gives you immediate pH reading, the CO2 indicators take time (hours) to react enough to provide general pH. --- The CO2 indicator liquid they sell you is very expensive if bought in those small drop bottles. The liquid looks and reacts to water as if it were bromothymol blue, which measures pH around 7. So, I use BTB as this lndicator, and it performs the job inexpensively - gradually. Do not mount in the light as algae will grow more readily on it. This is an accessory that would help you, but it is not a necessary item for the freshwater aquarium (as long as you have another way to take pH).
