I thought these weren’t working at first (seemed my parameters were always the same) but then suddenly had a nitrite spike and these did detect it.

Fish tank must have
I've been using this product for years on all my fish tanks to make sure the levels are perfect. Amazon has the best pricing for the product. It's a super easy item to use and gives you the knowledge if there are any water conditions that you should be fixing. Sometimes when pulling the tester out of the water it can bleed onto the paper however I have never had it bleed over so much that it messes with the testing.

A game changer
I delight in never having to do liquid-based parameter checks ever again. I've been an aquarist for many years and have had larger set-ups (over 140 gallons) and smaller ones (6 gallons). These are easy to use and give you mess-free, accurate readings every time. This sounds melodramatic, but, for fish enthusiasts, these are a must!

Got a new tank? You're going to want to know about Ammonia, and this won't test that for you.
These strips are easier to use than the API master test kits, which is why I initially just got them. They also test general and carbonate hardness (GH and KH, respectively), which are important and which those kits don't cover. Finally, these strips are MUCH safer to use - if your child under 12, say, has a tank they're testing it alone most of the time, get both this and the master kit, and make the master kit something you do together - with only you handling the chemicals for Ammonia and Nitrate testing. However... These strips, irritatingly, don't come with instructions. You can google for them, and find a PDF with them on the API website, but after I did that, I found that some of what those instructions say about ideal parameters for tropical fish are really at odds with what I'm reading a lot of other places - especially where hardness is concerned. I think there are even some disagreements with the instructions (which actually are provided, thank goodness) in their own Master Test Kit. Also, the results aren't ideally made for accuracy within the small range of results you're going to be dealing with most of the time. The scale is just too inprecise (like leaving the inches off a yardstick) where you want to know more detail - and that isn't helped by the fact that it's a difficult judgement call which color things have turned too often. The low end of the Nitrite and Nitrate readings, especially, are extremely difficult to distinguish from each other on the basis of tiny differences between very similar shades of pink - and you really, really need to know those results, especially starting up a tank, and you should hope you never see them stray too far from that small range where it is the most difficult to read what's going on with these strips. I trust API's quality to be higher than many of the other test strips out there, but they're still riddled with issues. I can't recommend anyone rely on them alone.

Best value there is
Petco and any other source is much more expensive, this is good enough and the best value. Great!

Count the strips in your package
I ordered the 100 count version of these test strips to save a couple dollars - that didn't work out so well. Maybe it was the supplier and not API, but at some point the vial I originally received was shorted. Upon receipt, I didn't think to count the strips. After setting up several new tanks and running a lot of tests I was surprised that I was almost out of strips. I went back to my logbook; counted up test results and discovered that I was given about 50 test strips in a container sold as 100 strips. I tried to work through Amazon to get another 50 strips that I should have had and wound up with a duplicate order. I didn't send back the empty vial from the first order, so now I have purchased 2 vials x 100 strips but only received 150 strips (the second vial did have 100 strips!). The time to try to explain and resolve this discrepancy isn't worth the loss.

Good, bit no chart to show you ideal levels
We are new to tropical fish keeping and wanted to get these to help us keep a check on our water levels. They are great and easy to use, but it does not show you what the ideal levels are so we had to research this on online. A little chart or guide would be handy. Would buy again and came really quickly and in sensible packaging.

Absolute waste of money! DONT BUY!
What a waste of money, they’re completely inaccurate and terrible to read because it doesn’t tell you what’s okay and what’s bad so you have to look it up everytime! I thought my water parameters were good, went to buy fish and when the shop tested my water we found my parameters were terrible and wasn’t allowed to buy fish, safe to say these went in the bin and brought myself a proper water test kit!

do not work
these do not work they are terribly inaccurate when they do decide to give a reading (less than 10% of the time) spend the extra money on an API master test kit. yes, its way more expensive but if you care about your beautiful beloved fish you would without a doubt be better off with the master test kit.

Quick, simple to use and reasonably accurate
The readings are fairly accurate, I have compared the results against the API liquid tests, JBL ProScan strips andthe PH with a calibrated PH meter. Some readings are a little harder to read than others and always seems to end up between two shades/readings. Overall they are accurate and good for a quick spot check of your aquarium

A very usefull quick check
I am convinced that the liquid test kits, such as the API Master Test Kit are more accurate. However for a quick check these are very useful to give an idea as to water parameters and you get five test results in around one minute. I would check with a liquid test before making changes to the water chemistry though.
