Just read my review
Before I go into my spiel, I think the best way to collect water is to skim it off the top of somewhat still water so it has less solids (adding some longevity to the filter). The bag has some trouble filling from top water so we took a pot to skim top water and then poured it into the bag. Now... I went on a 8 day kayaking trip on the Buffalo river in AR in July. Me and a friend had to drink a lot of water. We used this 1-2 times a day to fill at least 2 gallons at a time. The guy I went with just turned 65 years old and he brought two pump water filters that he’s used on over 20 weeklong+ trips and we never even broke them out. By day 4, he said he was going to buy two of these filters. I’ve not used any other filter but after hearing his praises, I’ll probably buy another filter as a backup and a couple spare filters. We’ve hung this filter from a carabiner and shock cord from many tree limbs and telescoping poles we used for our rain fly. To try the durability of it, I threw it with my food dry bag (in a ziplock) and didn’t try to baby it. It got knocked around and beat up a little but held strong. The one other negative thing I’d have to say about it is that it would still drip (very very lightly, not enough to mater imo) when left hanging upside down with water in it from the mouthpiece of filter even when closed. Also when you shake it to clear the filter with water in the bag, unless you hold the lid shut tight, some water will leak or splash out. Other than that, this think is top notch, packs down small, and filters water, durable (as far as I can tell), and convenient Will buy again as a backup

Great Filter!
Great filter, and the only reason this is not a 5 out of 5 is the filter seems to slow down, even after a few uses. This never happened with my 1-liter version of Befree, However I contacted the company (BeFree) and they said to soak the filter in 1 liter of water with bleach or vinegar, overnight, and it will clear the flow. Worked like a charm!

Ok product - great customer service
I purchased this for a 5-day Boundary Waters trip, intending on using it as my primary water filtration. Initially I thought it was ok, but continued to get progressively slower and harder to squeeze to get flow out of it. I'm aware that this is symptomatic of a clogged filter and per the instructions, should swish in water or within the bag itself. I did this a number of times. The water is exceptionally clean in the Boundary Waters, so it wasn't that I was trying to filter dirty water. Outside of the slowness, it developed a pinhole leak, so every time I tried to squeeze water it would shoot out a small stream from the side of the bag. It worked well enough to get me through the trip, but I may look for a different option on my next trip. **Update** I reached out to Katadyn and told them of my experience. They stated there is something in the Boundary Waters water that causes the clogging issue, which to me indicates I'm not the first person to let them know of this. At any rate, they sent me a new filter and bag, which impressed me. Still on the fence as to whether I would again rely solely on this in the BWCA, but great customer service and they stand behind their product.

Quick and Easy water filter
I love this filter. I use it most every weekend. It's lightweight, durable, and easy to use. It filters much faster than a lot of others out there It's easy to clean. The bag is good quality. It hasn't been punctured or deformed by being stuffed in my backpack.....then pulled out.....then stuffed back in......etc. The bag doesn't have a taste or a smell that I've noticed.

Perfect for backpacking
This is the best water filtration I’ve ever purchased. Easy to use, reliable, and easy to pack

Great for base camp.
I use this for my base camp. I carry a smaller one with water while hiking. So far no leaks.

Easy to Use - High Flow Rate - John Muir Trail Proven
The Katadyn BeFree water filter worked flawlessly on a recent John Muir Trail 17 day backpacking trip. I already have the Sawyer Squeeze, but decided to switch for the trip because the Katadyn filter bag is easier to fill in streams and lakes. The larger opening speeds up the collection of water significantly. And, the Katadyn filter bag is sturdy. Also, the filter has a higher flowrate than the Sawyer Squeeze. With that said, the Katadyn doesn't have the same useful life in filtering water as the Sawyer Squeeze. The biggest disadvantage I found with the Katadyn filter is that the bag likes to collect/attract dirt. When you set the bag down on the ground the filter bag attracts dirt like a magnet. Overall, very happy with the Katadyn BeFree filter.

Clogging issue
This is an amazing filtration system! I’ve read many reviews about peoples disappointment with this filter clogging after minimal use. Read the instructions fully people! If this filter clogs its more than likely due to air trapped in the filter fibers. If this happens push water through the system with the nozzle pointing up (just the opposite of how you’d be filtering for consumption) this should restore your flow rate.

Very disappointed
I purchased this filter after reading some good reviews. I must say that I am disappointed. I used this in killarney for a weekend of camping. It is easy enough to fill and carry, and hang from a tree branch. It also packed up nice and small to transport. From what I can tell, it did its job and filtered the water(it tasted good and I did not get sick). After using it once, the flow rate was not even close to the 2L a minute they say it will do. I cleaned it and it didnt change. As other reviews said, if you squeeze it, it will go faster but who has time for that. The cap, it is similar to the top of a powerade bottle. They could have come up with a much better design. I can deal with the cap, but the low flow rate is no good. I used my Grayl more than the Katadyn.

Good for a small group.
Easy to use, light weight, fast flow rate, easy to clean. A bit nervous about the thickness of the bag but so far so good. I also use a sawyer squeeze. I found that the sawyer water is a bit yellowish whereas the Katadyn is crystal clear. Couldn't distinguish taste though. On the left sawyer on the right katadyn. Same water source.

Flow rate slows dramatically with use
I used this filter on a camping trip and initially the flow was OK but definitely not the 2L per minute that was advertised. After only 1-2 days of use, the flow slowed dramatically, and I had to squeeze the bag to even get the flow up to a reasonable rate (still nowhere near as advertised though). I am fit and have strong hands, but it was very uncomfortable to squeeze the bag for so long just to fill a 600ml water bottle. This was being used in very clear/clean water, with almost no visible contaminants in the water. Washing the filter using the methods advertised had almost no impact on the flow.

wow
I went backpacking with this water filter. The heat wave dropped our usual small lake water level to the point it was mud all around it and couldnt access the water in the middle without going for a "swim" in mud. We put the filter to the test. It filtered the mud and gave us clean drinking water. Required lots of twirling of the water filter though in the bag. The flavour tasted a bit stale but I will take it over its amazing success that would have ruined other water filters I owned in the past.

Great filter, but could be faster.
The filter is easy to use. Fill with lake, river or pond water, put the filter cap on, and squeeze onto a container. It takes a bit of effort to hold the bag, aim it into a pot, and squeeze the bag but pretty simple procedure. Not as simple as one gravity bag filtering into another, passively. It is much less bulky though. Very happy with the purchase and would buy again.
