Top Tier filter for 5+ years
If you're looking to replace a Katadyn filter, or are looking to buy a Katadyn for the first time, I strongly recommend giving it a shot. I've used a 6L Katadyn gravity filter on long hikes and camping trips for 5+ years. I can filter 150 Liters of water through these cartridges before they tap out, and there is no matching the speed with which these things get the job done. Whether you're hiking solo or with a large group, the Katadyn Gravity filter will make your water stops incredibly quick and hassle free. Top Recommendation P.S. I see many reviews where customers claim this product defective when in fact it is user error. The filter must be screwed down nice and tight for the item to work. If you don't screw it down far enough, the release valve will not allow water to flow through the filter into the tube. So if you ever notice your Katadyn went from a pour to a trickle between uses, double check your setup is screwed down properly.

Replacement filter works fine
This filter is a replacement for the original. Other than being a little pricy, it works fine. The concept of filling a 10 liter bag with lake water (for like in the Boundary Waters) and then letting it filter as it is used is an elegant design, compared to the old pump style.

Best system yet
We had 12 people for 12 days with one filter. The last couple of days it slowed down, so I brushed it out and it flowed well enough to get us through the rest of the trip. That was high sierra with low sediment water. It is a little tougher with silt. I would carry a spare filter from now on. They are a little expensive (but everything is a trade off, you want to carry fuel to boil?). The reason I don’t buy spares to just have around, is because I lose them or forget them. If you are more organized than I, it’s a great choice. I have both the biggest system, which I think is 6L For big groups and the 3L(which is super light) for myself and 1 or 2 other people. I have been using pump filters since high school and these gravity fed ones made life more enjoyable. Katadyn is the gold standard, too, so I feel I can trust it and it really really works :-)

Very happy now. Thought the filter clogged but I was wrong.
4 of us went on an 8 day Eastern Sierra backpacking trip and relied on my 6L filter bag. Midway through the week the filter slowed significantly. Had to rely on other's hand pumps for a day. On first examination my filter looked pretty clean, but I removed the pre-filter and cleaned everything anyway in clear running creek water. Still working very slow. Next day unit was useless. Gave it some more thought and concluded that maybe the clog was not the filter but the check valve in the bottom of the bag. But how to confirm & clean? I removed the filter from the bag and sure enough the water stream was still very limited. With filter removed and water in the bag, I blew through the hose while it was connected to the bag. When I stopped blowing the water began to pour out. Upon reassembly - everything fine again. My conclusion - the check valve in the bag bottom is sensitive to dirt. Maybe the hose fitting had something on it when inserted into the valve. Filter worked great the rest of the trip.

We always carry an extra one.
We use our in the BWCA every year to be assured of plenty drinkable water.

Pretty much what others say- works great for a few bags, but then it slows and stops completely
I am not a person who writes reviews, but feel the need to say something here. I used the pump version of Katadyn for years and many trips without even thinking that I needed to clean the filter. It just worked, and it worked so great! So when I started using this gravity filter almost a decade ago it was a game changer. The first filter lasted a long time (a few years) and I was sold. However- maybe 4 years ago I finally had to get another filter, which is fully understandable after many years, and that one clogged after only a day or two. I took it to an outfitter who said that Katadyn is working on the issue and they gave me a free filter. I talked to a guide there who said they have stopped selling and recommending this Katadyn filter because of the clogging- they only do Platypus. That free filter also clogged in a day or two of normal camp use. And I use this in the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness, which has super nice and clean water. Since then, I have been a chump who buys a backup filter for $45 and has to use it for almost every trip. The lifetime cost of this is absolutely crazy. DO NOT BUY unless you are willing to buy a new filter for each trip!

Clean water with ease!
We love our camp-10 liter katadyn filter, especially on long backcountry trips into the Boundary Waters and Porcupine Mountains. Way easier than hand pumping water filtration. The filters last pretty long when you are selective about how to collect water. Avoid murky water or water with high particulate matter. One filter lasts multiple trips throughout the summer. By late summer I recommend taking a second filter because when they clog, filtering times can extend considerably. The filters can be cleaned of gross particulates but the paperish filter is hard to clean. I recommend the Katadyn filters. Helps keep your entire crew safely hydrated!

Great for a short time; then slow; then stopped
I've used at least 6 of these filters on different trips. New filter every time. Consistently slows down, or stops, depending on water quality. Pros: -Love the idea of the gravity filter - no active work to clean the water. -Filters amazingly well for the first 1-2 days, depending on water -Really like the direct-to-CamelBak attachment -Only one "dirty" water bag, no need to keep track of "clean" and "dirty" water -10L bag is great for camping farther from water Cons: -"Flashdance" - don't try to fill to top, or you will recreate the scene from Flashdance when hanging overhead. 10L bag = 22 lbs = unwieldy -Even the company says to wrap a coffee filter around it as a pre-filter, to make it flow better over the length of a trip -Never found an effective way to clean it in the field, and restore flow. Has slowed, or stopped, every time -I've not been using this in industrial swamps --- all clear mountain lakes Note: Over time, the black connection housing may need lubrication in the sliding mechanism (attaching the white tube).

Kept me healthy and hydrated
I think that this product could be designed for better water collection in shallower water conditions. That could be a user issue too. Used for a canoe trip down the north saskatchewan River for a few days. We were kept hydrated and healthy. 10/10 will be buying again.

SUPER convenient. Only last two or three trips.
Echoing what a lot of other people have said in reviews. This gravity bag system is a hug convenience over hand pump systems because there is literally zero effort. Okay, so you just have to hang a heavy bag in a tree. The flow is initially great, but after two weekend excursions, the flow will reduce to a trickle and no amount of cleaning or rinsing (such as the instruction manual says) will restore it. Like a lot of people, I thought maybe I just got a bad first filter, but the replacement did the exact same thing: flows great for a weekend trip or three, then half an hour to fill a 1L bottle. That they advertise it as filtering 1500L is a JOKE. Maybe 1500L of clean tap water. Even using the cleanest lake water, it will maybe give you 100L before it becomes essentially unusable. If you need a great filter system you're okay with throwing out after one or two seasons, then this is okay. Otherwise, stick with hand pumps.
