My third magnifier and not because I lost the other two.
This is my third hands-free-magnifier. I put them around the house. My eyes are getting older and print is getting smaller. One in the kitchen to read small print on boxes. One in my craft room for threading my sewing machine and one in the bathroom for instructions on medications and trying to remove slivers from my hand. Much nicer that it can sit by itself and I have my hands free to do the task I am working on.

Love this thing, i have 2 now!
Having tried other magnifying glasses, this is the one you want! The handle really comes in handy if you are examining something that you want hands free. The light works well also (vs another brand that broke after a short time). It's versatile and very useful...highly recommended!

Better than most
This is a preliminary "just opened the box" review. This magnifier is not particularly suited for reading. It'd be great for crafts or sewing. Uses 2 AA batteries (a plus). (Button batteries are a minus, such as SR1130/LR1130.) Getting batteries into the battery compartment is something a senior would find hard to do (a minus). It's not super hard, just awkward. You must have nimble fingers. I'd rather have AA or AAA batteries and have it somewhat hard to get the batteries. I don't like teeny button batteries where if you don't get the battery/ies in just right, the batteries flip out the casing, fly all over the room, and are hard to find. Button batteries for elders with dogs or cats are dangerous, since a dog or cat could eat one fairly easily and then you have a gigantic veterinary bill. The light is very bright (a plus). A round lens for reading is a minus; for sewing or crafts, a round lens is a plus. During reading, this magnifier only shows a few words, not a whole line of text (a minus). "Not showing a whole line of text" leads me to believe that this magnifier is not good for reading. The little stand is nice (a plus). It has a spot lens too (depends on what you're using the magnifier for). A spot lens is suitable for sewing or crafts (a plus). I loathe spot lenses for reading--they get in the way (a minus). I keep my magnifiers in a terry cloth pocket pot-holders so they don't get scratched. The directions on how to open the battery compartment are in the battery compartment (a minus). That means if you can't figure out how to open the battery compartment by yourself, there are no directions to tell you--doesn't make a whole lot of sense, does it? You could go on the Carson Optical website and see the directions there.

Good deal, but you get what you pay for.
I'm glad I purchased this, and it's been helpful while soldering. The magnifying glass works well. Though, because the flexible arm doesn't bend down far enough, you really will need to use this from only one direction - as they have it pictured. You cannot turn it around so the flexible arm isn't directly in front of you (and in your way), because if you do, then you'll need to be standing directly overhead looking down to see into the magnifier, which isn't a comfortable position. So expect to have the thick plastic arm obstructing some of your view. Also, the magnifying glass is plastic, so if your soldering iron touches it, you'll get little burn marks. Just keep that in mind. Mine already has three dings in the magnifier. The LED lights are nice to have, only wish they were brighter. I have to use one of the clamps to hold another LED flashlight so I can get enough lumens to see. Also the LED light that's built in doesn't seem to cast a wide enough light. You really need to put what you're soldering DIRECTLY in front of them for that light to work well enough. Problem for me here is that the clamp arms arms just don't bend well enough to position things just right in order for that to work all the time. So a secondary light is an imperative for me. For the price, it's a decent product. But, you get what you pay for. If you solder a lot, I'd spend the money on something constructed with better materials, and something that won't cause you the minor frustrations I've mentioned. If you're a hobbyist, it's pretty great.

Excellent tool for hands-free operation.
This one replaces a ten year old model. The original magnifier had a rubberized coating on the handle. Over time the rubber degraded and became sticky. The current model doesn’t have the rubber coating, works exactly as I hoped. Super happy. I use this for a variety of tasks ranging from finding tiny splinters in my fingers, reading tiny fonts on electronic devices (such as serial numbers), and untangling knots in my daughter’s thin necklace chains. Hands-free is a must for these tasks, as is the 5x magnification.

I do not regret buying
My opinion (I have tremors in my hands) the lamp quality is not all that great yet it is sturdy & performs just fine. When I went to change the batteries, the upper portion separated at the base & I've been unsuccessful to get the the lower portion which is blocking the door. The light is a great feature if you are using the small extra magnifier (the small circle) which I use to thread needles when I want to sew. However, I would not expect too much from the light for other purposes. I gave it a 4 because of the base separation & for my uses it works fine. If you are looking for something spectacular to use, may I suggest a pair of reading glasses. I paid $10 for a pair up to 250 magnification which I use when I sew & do other tedious work. There are some for PC's, outside, etc. & I have heard, not researched, you can get up to 700. I like this item as it helps in the wood work shop where reading glasses are not suitable.

Very handy magnifier
I love how I can set it hands free and even with lights on. The 5.5x spot lens is too small and I find it pretty much useless, but some may find use of it. I bought two and gave one for my old folks and they love it too. The lens is of good quality as well.

serves it's purpose
I wish the whole area used the round super magnifier, which is only a small area. The super magnifier is best for doing watch repairs, where the main area does not magnify sufficiently.

could be a little larger but otherwise it works well ...
could be a little larger but otherwise it works well for reading the newspaper lightweight for hand held option use built in light eliminates shadows that would interfere with reading

Objet utile
Faible luminosité del, aggrandissement insuffisant mais utile à cause de sa conception.
