I bought this to use as an auxiliary chuck and found that I was extremely pleased with the quality and machining
Definitely a worthwhile purchase for those on a budget. I bought this to use as an auxiliary chuck and found that I was extremely pleased with the quality and machining. The fact that the bowl jaws were added free as a promotion greatly influenced my initial decision, but I wasn't disappointed. I spun it on the lathe as soon as it arrived and my only complaint thus far, after quite a few boxes and bowls, is that I was turning a thin walled box lid and put a little too much horsepower into chucking it up for finishing and cracked the lid. It was cedar and that was entirely my fault, but live and learn. I'd definitely recommend this chuck to anyone, especially someone new to the craft or those on a budget. It comes with all the bells and whistles that my Nova chuck has and with the exception of it chucking with two stout rods tightened in opposite directions instead of a long handled drill chuck, the machining is very comparable and solid. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Missing a part!
I did receive the Shop Fox 3" 4 jaw chuck yesterday evening. The package was left under the porch, but the flexible package was busted open. One of the 4" tightening wrenches was missing. I tried to use a small bolt as a substitute, however it did not work because the bolt is soft steel versus the wrench us hardened steel. If you can forward another wrench, I would really appreciate it. The chuck itself is an excellent product. Thank you much, waynewwilbert@yahoo.com

Works well for holding SQUARE stock with opposite end attached to a live end.
For this to work well the stock needs to be VERY SQUARE. If stock is not square only 2 jaws make contact. Which means big whammy time when you fire it up to 3000 RPM !!!! This will not work as a one ended support for turning wood. Both ends need support. This is not a defect this is how they are intended to be used.

Works just fine for wood turning
I would have preferred a chuck key instead of the 2 tightening pins but for the price it was a pretty good chuck.

so good. It certainly works and is a better price ...
So far, so good. It certainly works and is a better price point than some others. That said, it comes in a plain box with no instructions and I still haven't figured out how to get the dies out so I can reverse them, despite the fact that one fell out at one point, I still can't actually manually remove and reverse them. I'm sure it's a simple process that I'm overlooking, but a one page instruct would be useful...

Fits Wen 3420
This works nice on my WEN 3420 wood lathe. I wanted a 4 jaw clamp not a 3 so I can clamp square stock. It’s awsome !! Only no center screw bolt included, had to make one. That’s the only reason I gave it 4 stars

It also has a tendency to loosen up easily. I bought this chuck to shape the end ...
The quality of this chuck is mediocre. My unit has 0.012" runout which is OK for some woodworking tasks but completely unacceptable for metalworking. It also has a tendency to loosen up easily. I bought this chuck to shape the end of ebony square stock for Greene & Greene style furniture plugs, and it works OK for that use. If you need a precision four jaw chuck look elsewhere.

Small chuck
This little chuck works great. I held off reviewing it until I used it several times in different ways. It works smoothly and holds well. The two tighting bars/rods are great, no key to twist. If you misplace a rod no big deal just use a drill bit. I don't know if they make a larger chuck but I am going to look into it because I can use a larger size. I highly recommend this item.

Not quite what i hoped for.
So to start, its not a bad unit. Its well build and solid. I bought this in my early days of woodworking as i couldn't afford one of the "fancy" chucks. I tried a few small diameter and short pieces of wood and its was great. its relatively to swap the jaws into reverse mode (not the lathe in reverse). but when i tried to do anything larger than about 1 inch wide and over 2 inches long the work piece goes flying within 5 minutes despite constant tightening to ensure it doesn't happen. - sent a 5 inch bowl across the room after bouncing off my arm (the tool took the brunt of the impact luckily). -making a tool handle and it threw it destroying the expensive walnut i had bought. Its nice ... but isn't working for me right now. I'm getting a new larger lathe in the next 6 months maybe it will work better then. I have bought other PSI gear and they are all nice so... have a look around?

I use it in my metal lathe for square steel parts. It's not super accurate or powerful but exactly what I expected for the price and it does what I need. I think it's intended for wood and it would be perfect for that.

Not to bad
I have used it once so far, It threads nicely onto an 8 tpi spindle and it seems to center well, i tried reversing the jaws, It seems pretty much standard and it works pretty well. My only complaint is that its a little "crusty" to move, i just gave it a quick very light grease and it seems much better. This is the ideal small chuck for the home gamer, I'm very happy with it for the price.

Great for small projects
This chuck is great for small projects on a mini lathe. Holds securely.
