Great use for memory and brain games not just mahjong

I bought this because I could not afford a real mahjong set at the time. Whenever my 80+ year old mother and I were together, we would play this game. My mom has Alzheimer's and she used to love playing using the real mahjong set. To stimulate her memory, this American version of the Mahjong set was useful with the basic functions like pairing tiles using 7 pairs. The game has 4 sets of suits including 9 circle tiles, 9 bamboo tiles, and 9 character tiles with the corresponding number on the top right of each tile. This is great for her arranging the suits in increasing number order per suit. There are 8 flowers, 8 jokers and 28 honor tiles which include 16 N-E-W-S winds at 4 each and 12 white, green, and red dragons at 4 each. That is a total of 152 tiles. This is great for recognition exercise by eliminating all the non-suit tiles from her hand. We also use the tiles to play a progressive matching game. Start with 4 tiles with two pairs of the same tile. Put them faced down. Flip two tiles face up, if they match then you win and keep the match. If they do not match, then put them faced down again, then repeat. The game has two dice, colored playing chips in yellow, green, red, and blue, and 4 color racks in yellow, blue, green and red. The two dice can be used for simple math by adding the two numbers in the dice. The playing chips are used for counting and color recognition if she has to pay 4 red chips, it will teach her to find the red chips and count 4 red chips. When we play mahjong, her tiles and my tiles are open faced so I can help her, too. We can also play the missing tile where you arrange the suit in number order but one tile is missing. She is given 2 tiles and from those 2 tiles, she picks the missing tile. I use a huge rubber band around the box to seal it close so that the box does not open and drop everything on the ground. So as you can see, this mahjong set is great for memory and brain games, too.

Think these will work

Here’s a comparison of the tiles with my regular Mahjong tiles. They fit on the Siamese racks & they’re about 2 lbs lighter than the regular ones. They will fit in a cosmetic bag for travel as well. Definitely will take some getting used to but it seems like a good alternative for packing when we fly.

It served its purpose

My husband and I were recently on a two week road trip across the western states. We play a version of Mah Jongg for two people and brought our travel MJ set for down times. The first time we sat down to play we discovered that the jokers were left home. I went to Amazon and found this MJ set and had it sent to the hotel where we would be staying on the projected delivery date. So Yay for Amazon who delivers when they say they'll deliver. The set itself is OK, the tiles are a good size for travel, but the racks are too short to hold 14 tiles. It's pretty annoying to have the end tiles fall off the rack while in a moving train. We threw the set away when we got home. Our other set is much better. We just have to remember to pack the jokers next time.

Great light-weight travel set

This is a very nice travel set - the tiles are thinner in depth than regular tiles, so they are much lighter to carry. The cardboard box can be used to carry them in if you reinforce the corners with tape. The racks are too short to push a whole wall out, but we fixed that by building our walls 4 x 5 then 2x9 instead of 2x19. I heartily recommend this set, especially for beginners and travelers.

CAME MISSING A TILE (2CRACK), HAD AN EXTRA 1DOT INSTEAD. CARDBOARD BOX WAS PRETTY BROKEN UP , BUT ON THE PLUS SIDE-LOTS OF EXTRA TILES INCLUDING SOME BLANKS I CAN USE TO REPLACE THE MISSING TILE. NEED TO REPLACE THE BOX WITH MY OWN BAG.

Missing a tile - has to create one - terrible as gift

Great idea for set, but with a missing tile, it is useless
