Works great for Japanese game consoles in the US!
I have a Japanese Nintendo Super Famicom game console from the 1990's, with an aging OEM Japanese power supply rated for 100V input. Before I got this transformer, whenever plugged into my American wall outlet, which supplies 120V, (or an extension cord coming out of the wall or a surge protector,) it would become very hot within hours, even while the console was powered off for those hours! Now, with this transformer in the mode that steps down from 120V to 100V, my Super Famicom still works great, and the power supply stays relatively cool - especially since the switch on the front of the transformer makes it easy for me to turn it off when not in use. Of course, since the Super Famicom is probably only pulling 8.5W max, I am waaaaaaay under this transformer's power budget, and am not pushing it very hard, it's also only seeing use for a few hours per day (while I'm playing only), a few days per week. But, it does work great! I also appreciate the extra included fuses, but I haven't needed them yet thankfully.

Use with Japanese woodworking tools
This has allowed me to make use of used Japanese woodworking tools in the US. The combined cost is much less than buying a US version of the tool, if it is even available. It is quite heavy, and draws about 45 watts on standby, so don't leave it on all the time.

Worked as described
Construction seems OK, its a metal box and transformer...not much to expect. The transformer IS NOT isolated, the share a neutral. I got a Toshiba XD3000 oven/ microwave/steamoven and it was giving me "high voltage" input error so I got this transformer. Its rated at 1000-1400 watts ( depending on function) and I got the 2000 watts rated. Works like a charm. UPDATE: I ran the oven for 70 minutes and transformer got to 130 deg farenheit, not bad, not great It does get warm, as all transformers do, but i dont think it will breakdown the dialectic anytime soon.

Decent transformer for the price, but nowhere near the power rating.
I bought the 500VA VT-500J transformer for use with a 100V 495W Zojirushi rice cooker (Japan Model), for use in the USA. In short - the transformer works and is decent for the price, but be well aware of the ratings (for example, without cooling, the transformer in this 500VA rating is likely only good for 100-125VA continuous!). As an electrical engineer, I work with power systems daily. I have worked with proper 500VA-rated transformers and they are significantly larger, typically weighing in at about 7kg. The transformer inside this as you can see is very small, about 1.5kg, and likely rated for no more than 100VA continuous operation. This is evident in the small-text the manufacturer is recommending, since they do say (in customer feedback in the comments section) to leave a 4x margin. Meaning this '500VA' transformer is in fact, more like a 125VA-continuous transformer. However, for the price (about $35), and keeping in mind that I'll be reviewing this as a 125VA unit (instead of a 500VA unit), it's decent. Construction is good sheet metal with a very nice powder coat finish. It operates in both 100 to 120V step-up and 120 to 100V step down operation (default). Soldering inside was OK, wires used were cheap but OK 22AWG PVC, and grounding was properly done with a locking washer and crimped terminal. Quick measurement for voltage conversion - 122.7VAC input gave me 104.0VAC output with no load - good enough. If I claim that the transformer is only 125VA, why am I using it for my 495W rice cooker? While a transformer of this size is only good for 100+VA continuous operation, it can operate at higher power levels for short periods of time. The limits are (1) thermal and (2) transformer saturation. In order to make this 'work' for my rice-cooker, I did some measurements and found that my particular rice cooker only turns on its heating element (which when it does, does draw about 500W) for fairly short periods of time (10s of seconds), before turning it on and off. As a result, the total average duty cycle is low. I also found the transformer performance to be acceptable at full load. Now we're left with thermals. To mitigate this, I added my own 120VAC fan on top of the transformer box. The unit draws just over 4A from my 120VAC outlet, so I kept the 5A fuse. I've run this box with my rice cooker many times now with no issues. Regardless, I am doing so knowing that I'm pushing the transformer to its saturation limits and keeping in mind that the overall duty cycle of my rice-cooker is fairly low. In addition, I DO NOT recommend modifying this product in any way, unless you’re absolutely sure you know what you’re doing, and understand that it will void your warranty. I will certainly NOT recommend this though for any product that uses 500W continuous for any period of time. For that, you will need to buy the 2000VA model. However, for smaller products which draw a lot less power, this is an acceptable unit.

Works! But Questionable Quality and Poor Documentation. Must Get Extended Warranty!!!
The media could not be loaded. I'm using the VCT VT-2000J US/Japan Up/Down Converter (transformer) with a Japanese Tiger SMG-A360 WL mochi machine from Japan. I purchased 4 year no hassle Assurion warrantees for both. They're both pretty expensive! The transformer's enclosed documentation is very lacking! The mochi maker is rated at 830 watts, so I estimated I'll need upwards of 2.5K watts (2x-3x) at peak surge and went with the 2K watt transformer model. You always aim higher than the target device rating on transformers to handle peak surge and potentially misleading false electrical rating specifications. If you didn't already know, Japanese electronics use a very similar electrical plug, but different voltage specifications, so they'll become damaged or overheat (fire risk), and might affect your warranty. Or hurt/kill someone. I would have gone with the 3K watt transformer, but that was going to take forever to arrive due to supply chain issues. Overall, they work great together, but the quality of the transformer is relatively cheap (poor) compared to the asking price. Not detrimental enough to be worth returning, but enough for me to question longevity. It did come with some spare fuses, so that's nice. As mentioned, documentation is very poor, but the newer US model has the input source defaulted to US, and covered with a clear plastic flap. You'll also need to adjust this if you're in Japan using US electronics. The biggest question you might run into is how to plug Japanese electronics in if you've never used one before. As previously noted, the Japanese electrical plug is almost identical to the US version. Just locate the Japanese 100V output jack on the transformer and insert it there (with some considerable effort!). It might even end up slightly lopsided, but you'll be fine. Also, check my photos and videos. Lastly, be sure to get an extended warranty if you can afford it. It's great for peace of mind, especially since the transformer warranty is only 30 days if I read it correctly.

These fail continuously
I have had three of these, first two failed in the first month or so, after 1-2 uses. It appears the power switch is the issue, so the third one, I started just unplugging it rather than using the power switch and it lasted a bit longer but eventually it too now has failed just outside of the ability to get it replaced. I don't know why these have to be such crap for something that is fairly simple in use, and now fairly expensive to buy. I wish I could get it replaced, as it is useful, but just not worth the money or the hassle for how cheaply made they are.

Works well but I wouldn’t travel with it.
We are using it to reduce the voltage for IR heater that is designed for 100V. Reduction from 110 to 100V doesn’t seem like much but it completely stopped the appliance buzzing at max power and made it work stress free. I wouldn’t travel with it though. It’s too heavy.

Fuses immediately break upon turning device on - Does not work at all
Immediately upon turning the on switch on the device, and plugging in an appliance, the fuses immediately break and the device turns off. Double checked that the input voltage is set properly (120 V input, 100 V output), same result with the other two included fuses. Complete waste of money, I recommend that you just pay the extra money and buy a more reputable converter in the $100 range, since this doesn't work at all

So far so good.
Used it for a few times. So far so good. UPDATE: just after 2 month and half of usage for Japanese import rice cooker, it's garbage now. The switch is on but no power. Checked and replaced the fuse even though it was still intact, no good. It broke down JUST after 90 days from purchase (bought mid Dec) so nothing I can do. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT UNLESS YOU NEED A EXPENSIVE PAPER WEIGHT.
