Just what you need, with one caveat
Construction is very solid - a typical vline product. well made all around. steel is acceptably thick, and the container is designed to defeat pry bar attacks. lock is very reliable and not at all dependent on batteries. No backup key function; this is the case with all high quality combination safes. what I liked: perfect sizing - 14x12" means that it fits perfectly between two studs (see photo of the hole I cut), and also the 12" height means it fits well under or above blocking between studs (the horizontal pieces of wood between studs). light weight - 25# as opposed to some of the larger ones being 45# or greater, ironically those containers often have less room on the inside because the lock mechanism is so large that it takes up the room once door is closed. 25# is also a lot easier to manuever into cramped spaces. no batteries to ever fail, no electronics to ever fail what I would like to see improved the shelf that is provided came with two small hex screws, kind of like sheet metal screws with the pointy tips. I did not use these. one, screwing those from the inside out would be super difficult since its very hard to see where the holes are from the inside. and, the diameter of the screws was larger than the diameter of the shelf screw hole, and I did not want to force fit the screws. instead, and I don't know why they didn't include these with the cabinet, I used two small machine screws with blunt ends, which I threaded through from the back into the cabinet. then, I secured both screws with hex nuts. the result is a very stable shelf that will not come loose, and there are no sharp edges to poke anything on.

Not the last word in safes but...
When properly installed (and hidden) it is an excellent safe. Like any safe given enough time and the proper tools nothing is impenetrable. What I like about this safe is that it fits between the studs in your wall and if you take the time to: a) Mount it in an out of the way place and by that I mean a place you REALLY wouldn't think a safe would be installed. Keep in mind that this safe can be installed almost anywhere where there are 2 studs that are 16 inches apart from each other. I used different mounting bolts to anchor the safe to the studs. I used much heavier bolts than what was supplied with the safe. I recommend you do the same. b) Hide the face of the safe so that there is an excellent chance that it would never be spotted in the first place and that is your best way to insure it's not tampered with. The safe itself is easy to use and program. There are You tube videos on how to program Simplex locks so I'm not going to describe how to program the lock. That is how I did it. Just be sure you have it programmed correctly before you lock the door because if you lock the door and don't have it programmed correctly you're going to have your hands full. Please keep in mind that this safe is not very deep. It's only as deep as the drywall that is behind the safe so the depth is about 2.25 inches. There are 2 shelves included with the safe, 1 fixed the other adjustable. My gun rests on the one shelf reasonably securely because the one adjustable shelf has a lip on it so nothing slips off the shelf when you open the safe door. My only quibbles are the following: a) There is only ONE sliding pin that locks the door of the safe and I would feel better if there were more than one locking pin to secure the door. My other quibble is that I suppose it's also possible to force the door open with a pry bar since there is a small gap between the door and the safe frame. b) Sometimes I have to clear the Simplex lock because it won't open on the first try. I hope this isn't an issue in an emergency. Even with these quibbles I really like the idea of this safe and that the lock doesn't use batteries or a key in order to open the safe makes it a home run. Highly recommended (so long as suggestions are followed) _______________________________________________________________________________________________ I rely heavily on reviews when I make purchases so I put some time into reviewing everything I buy on Amazon for personal or business use so I can help other people considering that item. Good, Quality Product
This is my second purchase of this vault/safe. I purchased and installed one a few years ago and it has worked perfectly for my needs. Below is a summary of my findings: • The wall opening for this vault is 12 x 14, and this is the cutout size that you will make. I highly suggest you preview the area where you plan on installing it to ensure you have 16” center studs (look at my photo showing the wall cut open—the drywall is flush to the studs on both sides). If your opening is less this vault will not fit. The best way to find this out is with a basic stud finder that you can purchase at Home Depot. • With a decent stud finder you’ll also be able to detect what’s behind the wall, like electrical wires, etc. Again, you cannot install this vault with “stuff” in the walls directly behind it as the vault will take the full depth of the opening on a standard depth constructed wall. • Once you’ve gotten past the above, the safe fits nicely and snuggly into the 12 x 14 cutout. Supplied are (4) 1” long hex-head bolts. While pressing the vault into the wall drill 3/16” pilot holes in 4 locations (2 per side, the metal is pre-drilled already). Then use a socket wrench or impact drill to drive the screws into place. • To install the shelf (I used 2 shelves in this installation), find the location that best suits your needs and with the shelf pressed to the back wall, screw in (2) self-drilling screws to secure in place. • Finally, change your combination to one that you like. It’s easy to do by following the directions, just take your time and read the directions carefully. There’s reference in the directions not to input numbers more than once. I don’t know what would happen if you do but I didn’t want to find out! • So, in my first of the two vaults installed I keep only my hand guns and ammo, and in the second I keep other items such as documents and minor valuables. I now have a lot of extra room for other misc. stuff should the need arise. • The feature I love most is that I can open this safe in the dark, even half asleep if need be, and get to the contents immediately. This is obviously very important should you ever need access to your firearms quickly. • I only have one negative comment. This pertains to the length of the hex-bolt supplied (only 1” long). I was able to secure 1 side of the vault using them, but I needed 1 ¼” length to secure the other side. A few sizes should be provided with the safe for varying needs. They only cost pennies! So, after owning this vault for few years and now installing a second, I can state that I’m very happy with the item and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in purchasing one.
