Looks great but cheap feeling
Looks great and does exactly what you want it to do. Very unique design. Good amount of light and heat for one candle. But it feels flimsy with thin metal and I wouldn’t expect it to be too durable. It definitely should be cheaper given the lack of quality materials.

Not the "Original"
I have owned a brass UCO Lantern since I first became a member at REI when I was 14 (I'm now 45) It has been with me literally around the world from the Cascades down to the cloud forest in Colombia to Afghanistan. However I was heart broken to buy a new brass one for my youngest son and find that it's no longer made in Redmond WA. but China. My first clue was the weight difference, the new one seemed lighter, i'd provide pics of a weighted digital scale but its currently packed. I own 3 of the older models to include the brass model, the only thing i have ever had to replace was the globe when it broke. New brass model has a few differences I can point out (bear in mind these may or may not be important to you) 1. it has brushed brass on the bottom half which stood out to me from my old version. That made me feel like it was a brass finish not brass but we will see. 2. the upper globe cage slides out nearly on its own, older version is still very tight tolerances when pulling it open (to include the steel version ive owned since 2002) 3. Both of my older versions click into place when you twist the black piece into place after changing the candle, new version is not as deliberate (no click)nor feels as firmly placed. Ok I realize none of these yet affect performance but I dislike the label saying Seattle WA. and not China. I am concerned with gear robustness and dependability, so far im seeing differences that could mean with the typical use I put it under it may wear out much faster than my older versions. (again that might not be as important to you) Now that the warm weather is here I plan on updating the review on performance later this year, currently 3 stars for what I feel to be a decline in durability and a misleading label.

Getting what you pay for
It does what you expect. Opens up makes light. Not the brightest but it is only a single candle. Had a night we had a black out due to “historic” early spring snowfall . No power at all. So was a perfect chance to use it. And in pitch dark it did a decent job didn’t let the candle burn down to see how long they last. So can’t give opinion on the burn time. To sum that up. I would buy it again.

It's ok
The Lantern itself is decent quality. I am a little bummed about it being made in China, which most likely means it will not last, but out of all the products similar to this out there it is a good product.

Nice little lantern for the home or camping!
While I often have a couple kinds of LED lanterns and portable battery packs when I camp, I still wanted the ability to light a small area with a flame. This little guy does the trick perfectly. I like the old maritime look of the brass model as well. It doesn't put off a lot of light, even with a reflector, but its enough to see where you are walking around the camp table or at home. It does also put off some heat. As any candle does, it gets hot above it, so make sure not to hang it on/with something that can melt or burn easily as the lantern will fall down. Some reviews state that the was drips everywhere. I did see how this COULD happen. When a fresh candle is used in the lantern, it pokes up above the metal spring tube that the candle is encased inside. If it is lit and allowed to burn enough to melt the wax (as candles do) this melted was is a puddle sitting on top of everything that can tip off the side. What i did was light the candle, let it burn enough to melt the top, then blow it out and allow it to cool back to hard. I did this another time as well. both time with the candle sitting flat on the table. Once the part that pokes above the metal tube is gone, the melted wax has someplace to sit while the wick burns it up. This keeps it from dripping unless you are rough with moving it or it get blasted with wind while hanging etc. Alternatively, you cold just cut out some of the wax on top to make a small bowl shape, trim the wick and go from there.

Compact, safe, single candle lantern
Works as designed. The compact feature allows for storage in any camping bag, from bare bones to full on glamping this lantern cannot be better. Except…the plastic bottom. The manner of closing the bottom is plastic, as a result the metal spring is difficult to seat within it properly. A metal bottom would serve the function better.

Didn't include the extras!
I ordered this thinking I'd get the lantern with 3 candles and a storage bag. I received just the lantern. It's still a good deal when I ordered it as I got 25% off the list price for just the lantern. Deducted 2 stars for the bait and switch!

Beautiful, compact and will last for many years to come.
Awesome compact little heat and light source. Feels very robust in the brass and will age beautifully. Just be careful of the metal cap above the candle. Without thinking I automatically pushed down on the top straight after blowing out the candle. It’s very, very hot!

No longer made in the USA, and quality control shows!
I've bought several of these UCO lanterns over the years and they used to be made in the USA (bought my first in 2013). Well, for the last few years, UCO seems to have moved production to China (surprise!) and the quality definitely took a hit. The old USA-made lanterns felt more robust, thicker, heavier and less rattly. In essence, they felt better put together overall. These new rattly and thin ones feel like something you'd find at a home hardware centre in the $5 discount bin. As an example of quality tanking, the black plastic base on the old USA models was screwed on tight. You really had to "pop" the bottom with your hand to unscrew it, which was a nice safety feature. The new PRC-made ones (I have two of those now) have bottoms that are rattly and loose, that you can essentially unscrew with minimal tension. It is much easier for them to accidentally fall off if bumped against something, plus as mentioned : they rattle. Funny thing is, these are actually almost TWICE MORE expensive than the old ones used to be in 2013 (bought all of them from Amazon over the years). Profit over quality @ UCO these days. What a shame...

MADE IN CHINA / won’t buy again !!!
Was looking forward to get a USA made product and after reading few reviews I thought I would give it a go. UCO is no longer manufacturing these in the USA, ALTHOUGH it says “Made in USA” in the description!!!! Don’t get fooled by this false advertising. The quality is no longer there and it doesn’t even come in UCO packaging. Sad to see another good brand cutting the corners and going offshore. Got a second unit as a replacement as I thought it was a mistake but the second unit came the exact same - Made in China! Won’t support this brand anymore. $50 for a brass lantern made in china is a fraud!!!!
