Large capacity. Great for saving cubes of broth.
I made a batch of shrimp broth by simmering the shells for a couple of hours. When cool, I filled the ice cube trays, put them on a baking sheet, and froze them. I easily removed the extra large cubes, put them in a freezer bag to use later. I washed the trays in soapy water first, then the dishwasher on the top rack. The smell of shrimp did NOT linger in the trays. I'm very pleased with the results. My primary use for these trays will be for making and freezing broth of many kinds, in the future. I may consider getting a second set for non savory type cubes in the future... just in case the smell begins to permeate the trays.

Just Ice
There's nothing I love more than complex brain teasers and thought puzzles. So this product was right up my alley. First of all, when it's shipped to your home (or place of business if you're gangsta like that) it comes in this receptacle which can only be described as a brown rectangle. What it cannot be described as is an ice maker. This reviewer can confirm that if you take this product directly off of your front porch and put it immediately into the refrigerator it will NOT spontaneously produce ice cubes, icicles, or other ice-related things like pickup lines ("How much does a polar bear weigh?... Just enough to break the ice!... Hi, I'm -----) or flavors up to and including vanilla ice. But did I throw in the towel at that point? Of course I did! I threw the nearest towel into the refrigerator because I was upset, OK? After, literally, dozens of minutes I still had no ice. But, take heart, diligent reader of ice cube tray reviews, because I persevered. I took the brown rectangle out of the refrigerator and thought about how to come at this from a different angle. Enter: Little Brother. Baby bro sees me sitting on the kitchen table - or my "Thinking Box" as it's labeled on Foursquare - with the brown rectangle and a furrowed brow. He then drops a revolution bomb on me. "Why don't you open the box first?" he says. This was the breakthrough I had been looking for. How he came up with this idea I'll never know but sure enough, this brown rectangle opened up to reveal the blue ice cube tray hidden inside. This actually made me feel a lot better because I thought the brown rectangle did look different from the pictures I had so closely scoured on this fine website (NOTE: reviewer is not affiliated with Amazon... but word on the street is he could be if Amazon wanted to toss a few shekels his way... just sayin'). So now the blue tray and I have squared off with each other and we mean business. After all, there's just not enough room in this god-forsaken mining outpost for the two of us (SECOND NOTE: the previously mentioned "god-forsaken mining outpost" has been more recently and more accurately described as an "up and coming neighborhood in suburban Los Angeles"). If there is a bad thing to be said about this product [other than that fact that it has NEVER remembered my birthday] it's that it makes you do all the hard work. I had to take it all the way to the sink and fill it up with water myself. But, if you have a boatload of free time to fill this thing up BY HAND and then move it ALL THE WAY from the sink to the refrigerator then this gem, my friend, is the product for you. I'll make this quick aside to mention the fact that you may also be interested learning more about a technique I'm developing which replaces the offensive speed and efficiency of electronic mail (or "e-mail" as the kids are calling it these days) with the crippling slowness of actual mail composed in your own sub-par and borderline legible handwriting [patent pending]. But there was one final missing puzzle piece here - ice. Because by now I really am starting to get frustrated. I've replaced the water a half dozen times and oriented it in different positions which yielded but one useful piece of knowledge: the product is MUCH better at not spilling the water if you orient it in an upright position as opposed to the saucy "come hither" pose when resting on it's side or the much bolder upside down stance which I'm being told is a position known as The Dirty Frenchman and outlawed in both Utah and Mississippi. Enter: Second Coming of Little Brother - as it's known in advanced scientific disciplines I had what is called a "Eureka" moment [or just a "moment" as it's known by the eponymous Alaskan town which may or may not be an actual god-forsaken mining outpost]. Baby bro drops the second revolution bomb of the day and says, "You know ice comes out of the freezer and not the refrigerator, right?" Um, how could I? This "freezer" is hidden expertly next to the refrigerator which explains why, at the tender age of 29, I had never noticed this before. Disregarding the apparent widespread use of such things in homes all across the world I have to say that in fairness, these things are FANTASTIC at making ice! Although, I really don't know how that whole process of water turning into ice actually goes down. Listen, I'm no chemist, but I'm pretty sure George Washington didn't fight the Communists in Mordor so that we proud Americans could spend an evening drinking hot pickle juice like a godless savage, am I right!? "GIVE THEM LIBERTY & GIVE THEM ICE" he said as he flew his bald eagle named "Mr. T" with a Harley Davidson tattoo into the wet bar in his enemies cabana so he could mess them up and steal their ice because the father of laser shows and epic wigs will enjoy a refreshing beverage of freedom and 60'' flat screens whenever he so pleases! But I digress. However the ice just manifests itself I can say with some confidence that if you have a freezer in your home and purchase this product you are well on your way to enjoying ice cubes as I have been doing since the revelation you just snacked on with your eye-holes. Good luck, and keep on rockin' in the free world. Oh, one last note - I do NOT recommend storing the ice cubes anywhere other than the freezer... unless you're a magician and looking for a new "disappearing act" because that's what the ice cubes will do if you put them in the pantry or attic.

Very Nice, Large Ice Cubes
UPDATE: How I finally made almost clear cubes with the Tovolo KING Cube Ice Trays. To get the best results, start with distilled water. Filtered water will give decent results, but not the best. It's important to have the cubes freeze slowly for maximum clarity. Some people have done this by keeping their freezer at a temperature not much below freezing, but this isn't going to work if you also use your freezer to store frozen food and ice cream. I solved the problem by making a small box of styrofoam boards, held together with painters tape. The walls of the box are about 2 1/4" thick and the box is just large enough to hold the Tovolo King Cube tray. Putting the tray in this box will drastically slow the freezing process. One of the reasons that home made ice cubes are not clear is due to air dissolved in the water. When the water freezes, this air comes out of solution as visible cloudy areas and bubbles. When you heat water, the amount of dissolved air that it can hold decreases. Cold water can hold a lot of air; hot water much less. I bring my distilled or filtered water to a boil and then shut off the heat and let it cool to between 185 F and 190 F. I put the King cube tray into the styrofoam box and then fill it with the hot water, using a funnel. Pour slowly, with a minimum of turbulence. USE CAUTION WITH THIS STEP; THE WATER CAN SCALD YOU! To reduce air going back into solution in the water as it cools, I put a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the King cube tray. Then I put the styrofoam cover on the box and place the box in the freezer. It takes about 48 hours for the cubes to freeze. Most of the cubes will be nearly clear, with a small star-burst pattern of bubbles. A few of the cubes may be completely clear. If you really want to put a finishing touch on your cubes, place the top surface of the cube face down on a granite counter top and let it melt for a minute of two. This will flatten the top surface and give a perfectly clear, smooth face. As this is going on, all of the other faces melt slightly and become smoother. Place them back in the freezer and you're good! The next challenge you'll face is getting them in a drink without cracking. The best approach I've found is to chill the liquid I'm adding to the drink in the refrigerator. I put the cube in the glass first and then SLOWLY add the liquid. If I'm lucky, the cube won't crack at all. The large, clear, un-cracked cube looks really cool in the glass. OK, I know that this is not going to be for everyone. If you have a little geek in you and can appreciate the fleeting beauty of large, clear ice cubes...give it a try. ______________________________________ ORIGINAL REVIEW I like the cubes these trays make just because they're BIG! One cube in a drink is all it takes, and they just look amazing. On the practical side, because they have a low surface area to volume ratio, they last a long time. Your drinks will stay cold without being diluted as much as they are with multiple small cubes. Before I used the trays for the first time, I washed them with vinegar and water. I've been using them for a little over a month and so far, no problems with odor or taste. I've had no trouble getting the frozen cubes out of the trays. I've also become obsessed with trying to make perfectly clear cubes. I always use Britta filtered water, but that by itself doesn't help. I then tried boiling the water, cooling it and then making cubes. No dice. Next, I boiled it twice. Nada. If you just put the trays in the freezer, they will freeze at the top first. I figured if I could get the bottom to freeze first, I might avoid the cloudiness at the bottom. I took some foam boards and insulated the top and sides of the tray, while exposing the bottom to air. This came fairly close, but I noticed that the small amount of cloudiness in the cubes was concentrated toward the center of the tray. I then tried leaving frozen cubes in 3 of the 6 molds and making new cubes in the remaining 3 holes. Naturally, I did it both with the 3 cubes in one row and then with the 3 cubes in alternating rows. Not really any improvement. Then I read that commercial ice makers make their cubes in layers, sort of the way icicles are formed. I tried adding filtered, twice boiled water one or 2 tablespoons at a time, waiting for the layer to freeze and then adding more. I got very cool looking cubes from this, but not clear ones. Has anyone had success with this? If so, how did you do it?

Excellent Silicone Tray for slow melting, sleek looking Ice Cubes
Excellent item, it takes less space in the freezer than regular buckets and the ice cubes are just amazing, good looking and with the slow melting effect they claim. Most important things for me when I bought this item were: 1. The size of the cube which as advertised is a 2 inch slow melting cube, it goes pretty well when having any liquor on the rocks (in this case rock ????) or any other drink for that matter. You can easily have 2-3 bourbon\scotch (low cut) size glasses with just one ice cube. 2. The silicone material, makes it really easy to take the ice cube out with almost no effort. Now, other thing that I have to comment (and how to fix it) is about the smell (I'm really picky about it) and how it could potentially absorb it from your freezer and pass it to your drinks (it took around 5 months in my case to be in that situation), you will get that starchy flavor you get on whatever you leave in the freezer for a long period of time (regardless of how well you maintain your freezer). This is one of the things that sort of prevented me in the past from getting these kind of items because they are not as "disposable" as a regular ice tray. Now, after spending some time looking for solutions that ranged from soaking them overnight on vinegar or other various products to taking them to a tarot session and have them read their future to see if it will be gone, well, I found the solution that actually doesn't take that long and it removes the smell\flavor from it. It's simply to put it inside your oven at 275-300 (Bake) for about 20-40 mins and lo and behold, the smell will be gone, the amount of time may vary, but I would leave it at least a solid 20-30 mins and then take it on a 10 min basis to check it (by having a quick whiff at it), this solution, applies to all cooking ware (silicon made). Anyway, after acquiring this peace of knowledge, I wasn't afraid to get some extra trays and replace the regular plastic ones, as from my POV they are worth it. Hope you find it helpful.-

Does the job
I love scotch whisky. Big ice cubes are, in my opinion, better than small ones, as they melt more slowly, diluting the scotch less. I originally bought these to have more ice cubes for entertaining, to supplement some spherical ice moulds. They do the job. They make big ice cubes and the silicone tray is very robust, and makes it easy to remove the cubes from the tray. They're great for cocktails as well. Are they as beautiful as spheres? Not in my opinion, but this tray is half the price vs the sphere moulds I have, and I end up using the Tovolo for my day to day consumption.FINAL TOUCH ICE BALL MOULDS 6 PACK

Excellent.
Excellent item. It's not cheap but it's certainly worth it. It makes six extra large ice cubes. They are easy to get out and they stay whole in your drink for longer as they are much bigger so they don't tend to melt and dilute your drink as others do. The only snag is that if you put a drink in a narrower glass you sometimes find that your ice cube won't fit in! Fast and free delivery from the seller.
