Love this thermometer. Beware the batteries!

This is my third review of this thermometer. First one was five stars because the thermometer did it's job perfectly; it was easy to read, small enough to have a privileged spot at the edge of our kitchen countertop, and worked flawlessly. We found ourselves looking at it throughout the day, so when it became fickle and required frequent changing of the channel or reinstalling the batteries it was bothersome and disappointing. I checked the batteries with a battery tester (purchased on Amazon) and it showed they were fine. Then came the second review that the device was great when it worked but a disappointment when it wasn't. Finally I had an inspiration to replace the batteries of the sending unit and the base as soon as it started getting tempermental and that worked and the thermometer is running flawlessly again. Lesson learned: even if the batteries test OK and work fine in a flashlight they have lost enough power to make the device tempermental. Replace batteries frequently and save the old batteries for use in a remote or penlight until they are completely dead.

Big numbers

LIKE IT. I bought two simular units at the same time not sure what I wanted and this one won. The big display can be the inside or outside temp. the smaller numbers are the other info... temp and you can set for max or min history.

Seems to work well.

There is no light so it can be hard to read but the numbers are large enough to see when you turn on the lights. I generally like it. Just wish it had a back light.

The thermometer came sooner than expected. It is working great so far. We like the size of the numbers on the display.

Using for an aquarium for the min/max feature

I use this thermometer for my aquarium. It has been unusually cold so I wanted to check if the heater could keep up with the cold at night. It records the min/max temp for a 24 hour period starting and ending at midnight, and it resets daily. The main temp has one decimal point, for instance 74.8. The min max only has whole numbers. The picture of the sticker of the thermometer is not correct. It only says in or out next to the main display, it does not show in or out next to the min/max display. When you push the top button, it toggles between in or out temp (both the main display and the min/max). I don't like the button battery, I would have preferred a AAA battery. I don't know how long the battery will last. For the probe that inserts into the water, I put a small piece of plant lead weight on it to give it more weight to sink. To keep the wire straight in the water, I cut a small piece of plastic straw and slip it over the wire.

Has many features in a small package.

Have been using for many years now and it is still working good. Could be a more readable display but LCD's are that way.

Simple to use

Reason we like this style thermometer is there are no batteries outside so they don’t freeze up. We’ve had one that was wireless and when it got -15 or colder it wouldn’t work because the battery would freeze or it would drain batteries. With this style the only battery is inside. I put the wire out the window and shut it. Works great. Battery lasts over a year. This is my 2nd one. First thermometer lasted 30 years, and was exactly like this one.

A reasonable price for a good instrument

The only way to get total accuracy is to spend a lot. This unit is not expensive, but if the sensor is properly located, it does provide reasonable accuracy on all counts. A difference of one or two degrees or percentage points between different units, or the official reading, should not matter, because nobody can feel that small a difference.
