Compost Thermometer - works well, easy to read
I purchased this thermometer over a year ago for my vermicompost bin (worm box), hence the long stem. I have since also used it for other purposes such as sticking in the outlet vents to test the output temperature of AC systems. I am overall pleased with the unit. The dial is easy to read and the accuracy appears to be pretty close. A few times I have compared it to various other thermometers and the reading was either the same or within a degree or two. And even then - I'm not sure which thermometer was off. I have worked with high precision gauges and thermometers in the military but as you would expect they were much more expensive units. . I saw a comment here about slow reading. Yes and no. It is not one of those 8 second fever thermometers but the response seems pretty typical for the type of thermometer it is. As you would expect, the needle changes the fastest when the differential temperature is bigger. So for example when I was testing the AC units the reading got "mostly there" in well under a minute. Then after I let it sit for another minute or so it might creep down another degree or two. I'm not even positive that wasn't the AC getting colder. But for uses like compost you should be fine. Just stick it in and wait a minute or so.

Exactly what I needed to identify and resolve my compost pile's temp issues
To be honest, I didn't even know my pile *had* temp issues before I bought this product, but once it arrived and I found my pile at around 80F, I was pretty disappointed. I was able to do some trials and make different changes, and it wasn't long before I had the pile's core pushing 150F. As a composting newbie, I was so pumped to go from "starting a compost pile" to "I have a fully-functional, legitimate composting system", and I never would have been able to tell if it weren't for this device.

Long probe is so useful!
This works as advertised in my compost pile, which is why I bought it. But, I've found other uses for it! It is great for taking the temperature of the garden soil anywhere without having to lie on the ground to read the thermometer. It also works great to take the temperature of the soil in deep pots as well, and the temperature in my pond.

Temp for Hay
I got this to check the temperature in hay bales. I liked the length of the thermometer and its easy to read. It was what I needed so I am good to go.

Necessary tool Easy to read from a distance
Watched this carefully to determine when to transplant winter sewn seedlings directly into.the garden when it reached 50 degrees soil temp 5 inches down. Big help, all plants took!

Useful Product for Determing Engine Temperature in an Air Cooled Engine
I was working on an air cooled car and was trying to determine if it was overheating. I needed to find out what the temperature of the oil was. Was having trouble finding an inexpensive thermometer through automotive channels that would do what I needed. This thermometer had a nice long probe that when I inserted it though the dipstick hole made contact with the oil. It gave me the info I needed. I know that I used it in a way it was not designed for but it worked for my purpose.

very happy
after seeing a lot of problems in the reviews with the cheaper ones, I decided to pay a bit more and get this one. very happy with it so far. does not fog up. seems to be very accurate. does not have the handy color sections though. I treat mine very carefully, always bringing it inside when I'm done and always pushing it into the compost by the stem and not pushing down on the face. just being careful because i want this one to last.
