Works well until it falls apart
Like warning in many of the other reviews, this ice cracker works well, using the principle of sending a shock vibration through the ice, cracking it (it's NOT a hammer, cracking it with brute force). My father had one of these in the 1960s and I loved using it, but I suspect the metal disk on his was a solid piece of metal, lending extra weight and reliability to the tool. This one, on the other hand, has two convex thin metal disks, one on each side, and is hollow in the center. The disks are held in place with glue. and after a few taps, one or other of the disks comes off and goes flying. The disks can easily be snapped back into place, but it will simply happen again after a a few taps. I'm going to try to glue them back into place with epoxy, and we'll see how well that holds. If it doesn't work, I'll throw it out; it's not worth returning for a replacement.

Not really strong enough for cold ice
This isn't as substantial as I'd hoped. When the ice first comes out of the freezer, it's not really strong enough to crack the ice. We found that if we run room temperature water over the very cold ice, it "pre-cracks" and then the tapper works perfectly. Given what we wanted it for - our small dogs love ice, but they need smaller pieces at their age, this extra step isn't a problem for us, and we love it for the price, but if you wanted it for cocktails, having to do that extra step might be a dealbreaker and you might want a more substantial one.

It’s aight...
When it works, it works very well! I tend to use large ice blocks and this helps reshape big cubes into smaller pieces if they can’t fit in a glass. Also great for drinks that call for cracked ice. Works way better than just a barspoon because it’s bendy and really snaps into the ice. Like other users reported, mine broke the first time I used it. One of the little metal disks popped right out, but it goes back in pretty easily. It happens pretty much every time I use it. Definitely frustrating, but not too bad if you are just making a couple drinks in a session. If you plan on any sort of heavy volume of drinks — party, bars, event, — this ain’t the thing for you.

The hollow metal end broke off on the sixth cube
It was a basic ice cube. Not a Borg cube or anything special and the hollow metal cap just popped off. Oh well, I will have to find a real bar tool to replace it.

not all stainless steel, mostly black plastic
Description leads one to believe item is all stainless steel. However, only the ball that hits the ice is stainless steel. I paid more for stainless steel, but this one isn't all metal, mostly plastic. Save a couple of dollars to get one that is more clear in what you'll get.

Flimsy
As other users have reported, the head is very thin and lightweight, so it isn’t really built for what it’s intended to do. The two metal buttons that make up the head are just pressure-fit into a too flexible soft plastic body, so it’s specifically designed to pop apart if used to strike anything hard - like ice. So, it’s just made to look like an ice tapper, not actually function as one. Purely decorative. Not an actual bar tool.

This is perfect for an ice eater. Breaks ice up nicely.
I love this thing. I’m an ice eater. I use this to break my ice into smaller pieces so I can suck on them. It’s so simple. Just hold a piece of ice in your palm and lightly hit it with the tapper. It doesn’t hurt my hand and my ice is broken into smaller pieces. It’s perfect.

Broke three taps on first use
Didn’t even last the first ice cube… broke first use. Avoid.
