Great for Everything Except Midges
I bought this head net before my first trip to the Scottish Highlands. I wore it with a fisherman-type canvas hat with a short brim all the way around. The brim kept the net away from my eyes and face, and worn that way it was quite comfortable. I could see well, and breathe without feeling claustrophobic. The cord at the bottom of the head net did a good job of securing it around the collar, which was an absolute necessity.Stansport Mosquito Head Net So I was able to hike and hang out in some amazing countryside without turning into a mosquito pin-cushion. I would happily give this product 5 stars, as it was convenient and effective for mosquitos, just as advertised. Unfortunately, the head net did next to nothing to protect against midges (also known as no-see-ums). These diabolical little insects tend to come in dense swarms, hungry for blood. They are smaller than mosquitos, in this case small enough so that some were able to penetrate the head net. Their bites feel like sharp little pinches, no fun at all. So I'm saving my Stansport head net for mosquito country. If anyone discovers something that protects against midges, please let me know!

Works Well
This is inexpensive, but works well. I usually hike in the woods near a stream. It gets buggy and the bugs tend to fly near my face. The veil keeps them off. I have worn it with a hat, which keeps the veil away from my face; without a hat the veil touches my skin but I haven't experienced any bites despite this. There is a reduction in visibility. I had read that the color black works better for visibility. As I haven't used a black netting I can't support or refute that. The net folds up nicely and fits in my fanny pack with no problem. The elastic at the bottom prevents bugs from getting under the net. I have used this many, many times and have not had an insect get under the netting. I have learned that if I wear earrings, I need to also wear a hat as an earring got caught in the net. The bottom line is I am able to hike in the woods throughout the season, whether there are bugs or not. I've noticed a reduction in hikers when it gets warm and muggy. The 4 rating is for the reduced visibility, otherwise this is fine.

Shields up!
My daughter and I carry a couple of these mosquito nets with us when we go geocaching. We wear BugsAway clothes that does a great job keeping ticks and mosquitoes away from our legs, torso and upper body, but that doesn't help much with the face an neck areas. We don't want to put Deet based repellent on our face so we throw these head nets on when we're caching in the woods and the mosquitoes are out (which has been all year this year). I'm sure I look goofy, but it's worth it as the netting does a great job keeping the biters away from your face. It works best for us when we wear a cap under it to keep the netting off the face (the little rats will bite through the netting if it is touching your skin). The tight weave reduces visibility about the same a sunglasses, so I have to take my sunglasses off when wearing the head net to see my way around the woods. The tight weave also blocks a bit of the breeze so my face gets sweaty. But the tight weave also keeps out the little gnats and other tiny annoyances that lurk in the woods with the mosquitoes. We've been washing them after each use and so far they're holding up well and should last a couple seasons.

worst purchase ever - i am so done with "Stansport".
attention campers the item i received is not only not the one in the picture, it appears to be used, and is as far as i can tell, non functional. the top is missing - it is basically a tube of mesh. the fabric "ties" look to be moth eaten . (i am sorry i even brought it in the house - could there be moth eggs in there?). the good news is that amazon not only refunded my money but does not want this item returned to them. not that i blame them, it is going directly in the garbage. FYI - it is a Stansport Mosquito Head Net B001E0WGB2 also 100836283. this is probably the worst purchase i have ever made on the internet. BTW it arrived in a small unmarked clear open plastic bag, 1/2 in and 1/2 out. there was a small white sticker on it. things like this give internet buying a bad name - if i was amazon i would shut this retailer down ASAP. i think what they sent me was the following (i did a google image search). it may be german war 2 surplus. i looked on google images trying to figure out just what this is - it appears to be either german or vietnam era netting to be placed over a helmet - so it makes sense it would look like a tube - the top fits over the helmet. you need a helmet to make this work, my wife insisted i get it out of the house ASAP so i placed it in a zip lock bag in the garage, it is truly disgusting.

Great to keep the critters away!
I took this with me for a long walking trip in Patagonia. While the mosquitoes weren't too bad the flies could be. It is inexpensive, light, very easy to pack in a daypack, and absolutely did the trick. When I was in areas where there were flies I would put this over my hat, particularly if it was a place where I intended to rest. Result--pesky flies couldn't bother my face and I could nap in comfort. It is large enough to fit over a hat with a 4 inch brim, long enough for the netting to reach to a collar and "bunch" and full enough that it doesn't touch the face. It has gained a permanent place in my day pack.

Inexpensive, Tough (Lasts Years) & Saves our N Minnesota Summer!
When used with a Tilly hat or other hat with brim it's perfect! We've been using them for years here in N Minn - mosquitoes, horse flies, etc. will drive you crazy and keep you from peak berry & mushroom foraging. They're tough - if it gets pulled off by a branch it doesn't tear. I spray our homemade bug spray right over the top of it when it's on (just close my eyes & hold my breath). Every now and then I hand wash it out in soapy water and hang to dry overnight. Easily worth the money - we buy extras for when friends come up and want to take a walk in the woods :)

Hiking during the summer is more enjoyable when you don't have to wave off bugs all the time. You can see great through these and they are light so the air passes through. NO over heating. They keep the bugs out. I use them all the time and have no tears or holes. They fit in my pocket until I need them.

The neck opening makes it easy for bugs to enter the net, and then become even more annoying! I tried tucking it in to my shirt but as I continued working in the garden, it came came free often. The elastic action or draw-string needs to be improved. Also, the shipping cost more than doubled my final price!!

Terrifying warning label on front of package. May stop mosquitoes but instead exposes you to lead and phthalates which can cause cancer and reproductive damage (this is written ON THE PACKAGING!!) 0/10 would let mosquitoes bite me.

This Mosquito Head Net is awesome!.
This Mosquito Head Net is awesome!...the net is so tightly woven that I didn't experience any flies being able to penetrate the mesh.
