If yours doesn't work, check for thin plastic film over numbers
I've had two of these previously and both lasted for years of fairly heavy use. As the second of the two was faltering, I ordered another and put it in a drawer so I'd have one ready when the old one finally gave up. Bad plan - new one didn't work. After checking the battery, which was fine, I assumed the timer was defective and since the return date was long past, I grudgingly tossed it and ordered another. Defunct timer #2 arrived. That was one dud too many, so I called their customer service. Very pleasant customer service person: "Did you remove the little plastic cling sheet?" Me: what little plastic cling sheet? She: Over the numbers. They often fit tight and are hard to see." It was also hard to pick off but once that was done, Bingo! - timer was ready to go. I suggested they should probably add "Remove plastic cling sheet covering numbers" to the instruction sheet. She: "That should be #5 on your sheet." Me: "There are only 4 items on my sheet." She apologized and said some of the old inserts, which only had #s 1-4, were apparently still circulating. She also said that calls about defective new timers weren't infrequent. So: if you think your new timer is defective, heed the headline above. Oh, yeah, the review: sturdy, long-lasting little timer with a strong magnet so it doesn't slip down on frig. Unlike some buyers, I love the loud buzzer because it means I can hear it throughout the house and don't have to hover near the kitchen.

A nuisance to set, but perfect of certain uses.
Update, 11/2/2019. After extended use, I've found this timer to be very convenient if and only if: 1. You are timing a low number of minutes (ideally, five or fewer) and no seconds (so you do not endure the repeated beeping for each minute and second as you set the starting time). 2. Or, you ALWAYS let the timer run down to zero, never stopping it early (so it automatically resets to the starting time when it counts down all the way to zero). 3. Or, you use it as a stopwatch, not as a count-down timer (the device does provide this option; just press the start button when the timer is set to zero). In this case you don't have to set a starting time and endure the beeping criticized in my original review. It turns out there are situations in which this is exactly what I need. Under any of the above conditions, the timer is convenient and effective to use, and given its low price (when I purchased it) and proven durability, it's a good deal. I'm raising my rating to four stars. [End update.] Pro: 1. Solidly built. 2. Has both a flip-out stand and a magnetic attachment option. 3. Accurate. 4. Easy to read display. 5. Loud alarm. 6. May be set for from zero to 99 minutes and independently from zero to 60 seconds. 7. Once you set the timer it will "remember" that time and automatically reuse it for each subsequent timing until you reset the timer (assuming that once you start the timer, you allow it to count down all the way to zero; see below). Con: 1. A nuisance to set. You must hold down the "minute" button (or the "second" button) to cycle one-by-one from zero up to the desired setting, and each increment emits a loud beep, so if you are setting the timer to 30 minutes you must endure thirty obnoxious beeps. Heaven forbid you want a setting of 30 minutes and 30 seconds in which case you must endure sixty beeps. If you accidentally go past your intended target (by even one minute or one second) you must clear the timer to zero and start over. 2. Once you start the timer, you must allow it to count down all the way to zero before it will return to the previous time setting. If for any reason you stop the timer early (before it reaches zero) then you must either (a) restart it from where you stopped it and allow it to continue the count down to zero or (b) clear the time setting, in which case it "forgets" your previous setting and you must go through the aggravating procedure of setting the time again. I bought this timer because it was inexpensive, but I also bought the West Bend Digital timer from Amazon.com and it is well worth the additional cost because it allows you to directly enter the time setting on a 10-digit keypad.

Clean the contacts
I've bought several of these over the past ten years. The last one, like the others, quit responding to the buttons being pushed. This time I took it apart (8 small phillips head screws) and used 91 % rubbing alcohol to clean the contact points and the place they contact on the circuit board. It's easy to do and get back together and now works fine again. I hope it lasts.

No-frills timer does the job
The media could not be loaded. Pros: - inexpensive - loud-ish alarm - simple - AAA battery - strong magnet on back Cons: - 1hr 39min is the longest time that can be set - not the highest build quality - only one timer - how durable will it be?? This is a no-frills kitchen timer. It hits the essential points and a good price point. Most importantly the alarm is loud enough that you can hear it from another room. I also like the fact that the magnet on the back is larger than most and has good staying power on the fridge. My last time would slide down the fridge. I do wish it could time longer periods than 1 hr 40 min. This makes it not usable for slow cook recipes. The build quality isn't great. The display does flicker if you push the buttons firmly. I don't know how long it will last, but I will put it to the test. I got it mostly so my kids can time themselves for cleanup time. It will be abused for sure! As another reviewer mentioned it does "beep" each time a button is pushed, but my previous timer also did this. I don't find it annoying. If you found this review helpful, let me know with your vote. :) UPDATE: It has been over 3 years since I first wrote this review. The timer has been dropped, squashed and otherwise used and abused by three kids. IT IS STILL KICKING. We lost the battery cover a while back, but the batteries stay in pretty well even without the cover. I can recommend it even more than before.

No ‘Off’ button
Great timer but lacks a power switch to turn off to save battery life. Need to remove battery after use.
