Great mesh connected system from Legrand, but it's expensive

So far, I am very happy with this Legrand Starter kit, and I can't think of any negatives for it, EXCEPT the price. TL;DR/Takeaways: - Fairly standard outlet installation/wiring. - The gateway, outlet, and switch work seamlessly. - No drops in connectivity or other issues yet, but I intend to update my review if this (or anything else) changes. Included product documentation: The kit includes accompanying sheets for each of the three packaged devices. The installation instructions are clear, concise, and easy to follow, which made everything go smoothly for me. Note: I have experience with electrical work, so I installed the devices myself. If you are not familiar and/or comfortable working with wiring, hiring out for this is strongly recommended. Components and Installation: The outlet was installed into an existing single gang box, with the gateway directly over the wall surface next to it and its wires tucked nicely into the same box alongside the outlet. The included screwless face plate tied it all together. The Home/Away smart switch can be installed anywhere on its own with or without an electrical box. I opted to install it over the unused slot of a 2-gang box by the front door, alongside a light switch. That said, the app takes over where the instruction pamphlets leave off. Once I created an account and logged in, pairing was simple. Firmware on the gateway had to be updated (automatically) during pairing. This only took a few minutes, but seemed like the longest part of the otherwise quick setup. Ease of use: The gateway is well integrated and unobtrusive, connects easily, and stays connected. You can control your connected devices in the Legrand app, or use your preferred (compatible) voice-controlled assistant. These Legrand devices integrate with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Home. Since I use the app on an iPhone, I was given the option to add control through HomeKit, which required a code located at the top right of the Gateway installation pamphlet. To pair with Alexa, I added the Legrand skill in the Alexa app, logged into my Legrand account through the skill, and allowed Alexa to discover the new devices. Additional devices: I may consider purchasing other compatible devices, depending on price and functionality, but this seems rather cost-prohibitive at the moment. **If you found my review helpful, please click the "Helpful" button. Annoying “Hum”!!!

This was designed well. You can make it so the gateway goes in any outlet or with any configuration. The setup was fine. The fact that you don’t need a two-gang for the gateway/switch or gateway/outlet combo is great. It sits flush against the wall. You’d never know it’s not a two gang box, but the humming is just too annoying. I am going to see if it changes by moving the gateway to where the outlet is behind the bed. Also, good to know that only one of the two outlets is controlled. The other is always on.

Requires its own ecosystem!!!

So...I've got a pretty robust home automation system at this stage. And I was looking for a 20A capable Z-wave smart outlet. This was near the top of the Amazon search results, so I pulled the trigger on it. Now, I have Zigbee devices, Z-wave devices and WiFi devices, all playing together nicely. This didn't really list what protocol it was using, which, should have been a huge red flag. But it said it worked with Alexa, HomeKit and whatnot, but required a hub. I figured surely I had a hub that would cover whatever protocol they were using... apparently, I was wrong! I've looked into the workarounds for bringing this into Home Assistant, but as far as I can tell...they all require a hub that uses whatever protocol they are using, before you can back together a local integration. It looks like a few people have gone down that path...but I'm so not interested in adopting an entire new smart ecosystem, for one 20A outlet. At nearly twice the price of comparable alternatives...even before you consider the purchase of THEIR hub to make this work, it is DEFINITELY going back. No thanks! A single, standardized "smart" protocol, can't come soon enough. *beats head against desk*

It works well

I've had this system (with 10+ switches) and it works better than anything else. Even after a power outage or loss of internet for a few hours, this system is still connected and doesn't "forget" nor do I have to ever re-connect anything. Every other power/lighting system requires me to constantly re-connect the stupid things. Expensive, but worth it.

Such a unique smart home device

Super cool concept. Wireless installed plug with app to track energy usage. Integration with Alexa really easy. Good price since it’s $180 at Home Depot.

Honestly?

This is a single component of a multi-component solution. 163-words into the 165-word description, we find the following 3 words, " *Smart Gateway required." If you are looking for a convenient solution. this is not it. Also this is not a $70 solution, it is merely part of a solution that will set you back roughly 170 bucks. Buyer beware.
