I like this filter with the heater. My 1st one had a heater failure but at least it was within the Amazon return window, so I got a replacement from them. First I tried Oase but got no response, their website requires you to create an account to even ask a quest for "Contact". The replacement unit appears to working pretty well now. The temp setting is real finicky but I have an external temp gauge to monitor the temp. I did mod the filtration inside. Did not like that they only had a little bio media and the rest was all coarse sponges. Put it different grades of sponge, better bion media. It is filtering great with my glass Lilly pipes.

Great canister filter for smaller tanks
I am using this filter on a high tech 6 gallon setup and it is working great. I did upgrade the outflow with an Aquario Neo Skimmer V2, bit the tubing and everything was compatible! I am only giving four starts because, like other reviewers show the body of the filter was scuffed from the included ceramic media. They should wrap the filter in something before boxing it. Otherwise, my experience has been great.

Expensive, but does what I expected.
The price seemed a little steep, but the integrated heater and 3 year warranty swayed me. Setup was fairly easy as far as assembly goes. Personally, I wouldn't dump the ceramic media in loose around the heater. That seems like it would be a nightmare to clean out, and I wanted good, unobstructed water flow around the heater. I could be wrong, but the move makes sense to me. I didn't plan to use the charcoal bags anyway, so placed the ceramic in my own nylon mesh bags and put them in the bottom of the center compartment. Priming was difficult to say to the least. I pre-filled the filter with water, but that wasn't enough to get it going. I had to start and stop the motor several times before the intake finally took a small trickle of water. Another 15 minutes or so and it was running. It took several hours and through the night to clear all the air in the system. In hindsight, I would again fill the filter compartment with water, but also fill both hoses from the top. I'm confident this would've really helped. The 200W heater has been able to keep a covered 40 gallon tank at 78 degrees in a 66-70 degree house. Flow seems adequate for my plans for a planted tank. Pump is running silent. I'll say 5 stars for now. I'm pleased. So far so good. Update: Well, after 10+ days of running the pump has started to make a little noise. Pretty typical of almost any filter, no better or worse than average on noise.

Great little filter with heater
I have the Filtosmart 200 on my 29 gallon freshwater tank. This filter is a different design than most canister filters. It is not the traditional cake layout. I suggest you read the directions before doing anything. If you purchase one with the heater, you will find that the heater reduces the amount of bio-media one can put in the filter. To compensate I chose Seachem Bio Matrix. Because of the high surface area Matrix has you do not have to use a lot. Using media bags, I placed 2 about 1 cup worth each (which is more than double what the instructions for Matrix state) in the bio media compartment of the filter on either side of the heater. Priming is done by filling the filter via the heater opening. Don't worry heater is easy to remove. Remember to use tank or de-chlorinated water to fill the filter. Miss having a primer button, but then I thought it is one thing I do not have to worry about wearing out. Just moved fish and plants from my 50 gallon into the 29. The filtosmart cleaned up the tank within several hours. The heater does have a calibration adjustment which is nice. Down side of having the heater in the filter is that you can not unplug the filter without first unplugging the heater so that it can cool down. Usually takes about 20 minutes. The same is true when you start the filter again. I always give filters a 24 hour window when I first start them to let the air bubbles out. Initially I could hear the filter, but now It is very quiet. I have it in my bedroom and I do not like noise when I sleep. Tip: I always put some silicone around any gasket that a filter has in order to prevent leaks and extend the life of the gasket. This filter has 3 compartments divided by 2 removable plastic dividers. This lets you configure it however you want. It comes with a coarse sponge, finer sponge that the strainer for the motor fits into, 2 bags of ceramic noodles, and 2 bags of charcoal. I have plants in my tanks so I do not use charcoal. Did not care for their bio media. Additionally, the instructions tell you to pour it in around the heater. I think it is easier to clean when in bags. Good 3 year warranty.
