If water pools for 24 hours, it gets past this product
I want to give a 5-star but the waterproofing of the entire surface is hard to achieve, even though I know I have bought the right amount. I can say that for the areas that this product did get onto, it definitely works. One note : It does not work if the water pools for 24 hours.

it waterproofs canvas!!!
we have used this product frequently in the past on large outfitter type canvas tents, during the cold, damp, rainy season with excellent results, but this is the first time we used this Nikwax waterproofer to waterproof new, raw canvas... the purpose of our lil’ waterproofing project was to create a little area to sit away from the main patio where we could stay cool and dry; so, we purchased a cotton canvas drop cloth,9 x 12 All Purpose Canvas Cotton Drop Cloth which we are using as our decorative shade and rain cloth. we choose a cotton canvas drop cloth, rather than a tarp to eliminate the grommets that make it look like a tarp... this way, we get a decorative canvas look, more of that "sail" look. that we desired. so, we washed and dried the canvas (to intentionally shrink it, in order to tighten up the weave, which reduces the hole size of the canvas weave, thus increasing opacity and decreasing water permeability (tight weave = very small holes = increased opacity/increased sun protection and better water repellency) we applied one (1) coat, per video instructions above, let it dry, and, wow!!! ... we could not be more pleased... water beads up and rolls off the canvas drop cloth like a freshly waxed car! even where we spilled some on a pair of jeans and old drop cloth, the water is beading and repelling water on those spots, just as in the demo video above on item detail page, where the host pours it over his canvas pants! i think we all love it when a project comes together...and, this one certainly did!! though we have not yet had a rain, we have experienced being well protected from the sun, and we have simulated the rain by spraying it with a water hose, watching, with pleasure, the h2o beading and rolling off, just as expected! very pleased... Thank you. :-) deke

Did not work as well for us.
I had a cotton blend fabric that I washed first with normal detergent as it wasn’t waterproof fabric to begin with. I have a top loader machine and I added the suggested amount of waterproofing solution and set my machine to 1/4 load, allowing the machine to fill and mixing the solution in before adding my fabric. After letting it complete it’s cycles I popped it into the dryer on low for a bit then hung it up to complete drying. My fabric beaded water in some areas and allowed water through in others. Fearing that the washing machine used too much water to make the waterproofing solution too diluted, we placed the solution with a small amount of water into a bin keeping the ratio of solution to water much higher. We allowed the fabric to soak for about 3 hours, agitating and flipping the fabric around often, and then hung to dry. The fabric beaded water better but still had patches where water would soak through a little. We read where folks had mixed results, and I’m sad to say that we are part of the unlucky group. My fabric is lightly waterproofed, but it definitely does not bead water like they show in their online video.

It adds a lot to the water resistance of cotton.
It doesn't make it waterproof for very long. You can't use this on a coat and expect to stay dry in a half hour long rainstorm. It does make hats or coats a lot more water repellant though. A light sprinkle, spills, that sort of thing. Treated fabric will also dry faster since less is absorbed into the fibers, or not as deeply... whatever the reason it does help. It would probably be good for canvas tents to help them dry faster and maybe reduce the dripping if you touch the inside. I have found it seems to work better if you don't rinse it out, so it's more like the method for applying to tents. It will have a stronger smell for a longer time than if you rinse, and I guess it might irritate some people's skin.

Good stuff
As others have noted in reviews, it looks and smells like diluted Elmer's white glue. Make sure you shake well and make sure to follow instructions. My deviations from instructions: After cleaning clothes (jackets and pants) with regular detergent, I ran them full cycle with a cup of vinegar. Then removed them and ran a full cycle of just water and vinegar (no clothes) to clean out any soap. Put clothes back in, filled the machine with water (all items needed cold), added half the bottle, let agitation cycle run, then stopped machine and let everything sit for at least an hour. Re-Started machine at beginning, let it run through all cycles uninterrupted. Put clothes in dryer without a static/softener cloth on lowest heat. Did this with Wrangler cotton blend cargo work pants, a no-name poly cotton jacket, knit poly winter hat, an LL Bean barn jacket (Teflon treated from manufacturer), and a Carhartt heavy cotton duck jacket (no factory waterproofing). The LL Bean, and Carhartt jackets got a spray down of silicone after. Both bead water well, the LL Bean jacket not as well as the Carhartt. The pants bead water a bit, they do not soak up water like a towel anymore, but they are not impervious to water (impervious should not be expected anyway). I do plan on using this stuff annually on all of my usual work outerwear.

I now have a very soft and ultra absorbant cotton jacket!
Washed in machine as per instructions. Allowed to dry. I then decied to see the results, a few drops of water were instantly absorbed. Total waste of time and effort! Very disapointed.

It works!
I'd bought myself a cotton parka coat and wanted to be able to wear it in the rain without my clothes getting damp. I followed the instructions for a machine wash and left it to dry. I wore it to take my dog for a walk and the rain just beaded on my coat. A quick shake when I got home (for both my coat and the dog!) and they were both nicely dry. It works! But obviously don't put it on your dog!

Adds some water repellency to polycotton fjallraven jacket
I've used this on a polycotton fjallraven (g1000) jacket with reasonable results. It imparts a slight water repellency to the fabric, which is far short of waterproofness, but okay for light showers. I will use this again as i just use the jacket for casual wear and it's an awful lot easier than using fjallraven's own wax treatment.
