Safety
Got these for hunting deer and turkey because of the warm weather in Alabama. Fits great and I feel safer because of the rattlesnakes. Read reviews about the plastic buckles but I've had no problem with them. As long as you line them up they snap right in. Happy I bought them.

I'm sure like most people who have purchased this item
Well, I'm sure like most people who have purchased this item, I didn't really give these the acid test. In other words, they were not struck by a snake. To be sure i had plenty of opportunities, as I bought these for the sole purpose of wearing them when actually going into timber rattler country and actively seeking out the snakes for photography and to observe them in their natural habitat. The expedition was a success,my companions and i located 30 rattlers and a couple copperheads. However, I didn't feel inclined to put the guards to the test as far as trying to entice a snake to try and tag me. I'm confident that the guards would have stopped a bite, but what if he had set his sights a bit higher? I'll let somebody else determine the guard's effectiveness in that department. So, I'll just run through the physical sides of the product. They fit well, I guess I have average-sized calves and they wrapped around them nicely. And there was room for more if I had needed it. I wore them over jeans. they were warm, but not terribly so. The temperature was in the 80's and the hiking vigorous, but they didn't slow me down. My being unfit did that job quite well. I wasn't uncomfortable in them, and you'd have to expect a bit of heating due to the nature of the product. I do think they might have been a bit clammy if worn on bare legs, again, that would be the nature of the beast. I think that some comfort must be sacrificed in return for solid protection. I found little use for the elastic bands included within the guards, they didn't seem elastic enough to really make much difference. I did not use them, the outside straps tightened up sufficiently. However, the bands did not impede the use of the guards by not being attached, so that was no big deal. They offered protection from the knee down to the top of my shoes. I wore tennis-shoes, which may have been the only weak spot in my defense if a fang could penetrate them. I'm not sure if they could or not, and I wasn't going to put them to the test either. The Real-Tree camo didn't make much difference to me, but I guess it did make them look more "outdoorsy". I guess stylistically I preferred them like that, but I was hunting snakes, not walking down a model's runway. But the camo was a nice touch, and maybe useful for somebody who might be hunting in territory where snakes are active concurrent with hunting season. So I'm okay with that. Finally, the point that might be most important. The fasteners. They seemed pretty sturdy to me, but, keep in mind that they ARE plastic. I tried to be fairly gentle with them, they did not seem like they were going to be inclined to break. however, this is based on only using them a few times, so I am unable to evaluate their sturdiness with any real deliberation. I'll stick my neck out and say that if care is taken and the user does not abuse them or try to force them, they should hold up for a while. Once properly tightened down, the guards did not move around on my legs or rub uncomfortably. I'm not sure whether this would be the case while wearing them on bare skin, but given the brush I waded through, I would not have wanted to wear them in that manner anyway. One other bonus that I had not considered when making the decision to purchase the guards was that they handily let me go through briars with out a scratch on my lower legs., which was a pretty frequent thing on the hikes. The briars didn't leave a scratch on the material covering the guards as far as I could tell either. I didn't drop a star because I found a flaw, but I just didn't think i should give them the full five-star treatment based on the limited time I used them. At the price, even if I only used them for a single outing, I think they were worth it. I've read that snake-bite treatment can start at around 25,000 dollars, so I just considered the money spent as an insurance premium. Bottom-line, I was satisfied with this product, based on the limited time I actually used them and felt secure during that time. And there were a lot of BIG rattlers present, so that was the important thing.

Happily satisfied
I just got them and really like them a lot so far. The only issue was the wraparound . Not a complaint, just wondering if each panel were narrower if it would make a difference (maybe 1 more panel, resulting in more narrow panels). Overall comfortable, light and have no issues so far with the buckles.

Gaiters seem very worthwhile but the clips are useless crap (CORRECTION ADDED BELOW)
OK, I broke a clip putting these gaiters on. My heading says it all and I very much like the actual gaiters themselves and the material they're made from, plus they fit well, but ... I would never depend on these cheap clips and thin straps to go strolling into snake country. I'd try heavy rubber tie-downs with hooks or heavy duty bungy cords or even duck tape! :) Why would a wildlife accessary company make what looks to be a very good set of snake gaiters only to ruin the product by providing the most brittle cheapest set of clips and straps they could possibly find? I swear, anything you can come up with to keep these gaiters on your legs would be better than the crap these people have provided. For the money I'm keeping these gaiters and I'll fix them properly. I may even have or can find some thicker straps with metal clips somewhere. CORRECTION: The broken clip I mentioned here was from an older pair of gaiters. Looks to me that the new gaiters may have a better plastic clip. Sorry about that. // kbd

Comfortable to hike with on, heavy but OK
First I hiked about 6 miles with these on my bare legs. They don't come with directions but you have to wrap the male clip side under the female clip side or you will get painful chaffing. Next I took them on the trail in a swamp with my full length hiking pants about 6 miles in 96 degree temps. The holding loop through the buckle kept slipping requiring me to adjust them by tightening the strap. It was a pain in the butt. Only reason I did not give this product a three star rating is they were very comfortable over my hiking pants. Even though I consider them heavy for backpacking, the peace of mind while just hiking is knowing a snake, chigger, tick or other varmint can't get at your calf is worth it. I'm thinking a safety pin will solve the loosening of strap problem but the manufacturer needs a better design to securely keep these fastened around your leg. Would I recommend them, no, but for the fact that I could find nothing better.

5 years and still no issues
These have been used during hunting season and for land clearing. I’m shocked the plastic buckles are still holding up fine without failure. I’m thrilled to have gotten more than a couple of seasons of abuse when I do use them.

Awesome product
Awesome product, best price. From Louisiana and our temps get hot and snakes are all around. Felt protected and safe my entire hunt which is exactly what I was looking for.

Comfortable
The snake guards are comfortable and easy to put on. I do find they can sometimes slide around on my leg even though I've done them up as tight as possible. That's why I didn't give it 5 stars.

a bit heavy but will absolutely keep legs safe
These are an odd thing but for people who enjoy roaming the bush in areas with snakes, they will definitely protect the lower legs. They are reasonably comfortable to wear (like a sport shinpad - you notice when you first put it on but then after a few minutes, you forget it is there) . They seem durable as well.

I'm glad I purchased them
I've only worn these a few times but they give me confidence in protecting from a strike. Thankfully no direct hits but these will give me protection. They are not too heavy and appear to be well built. I'm glad I purchased them.

Works, clips are not very good
I'd give it 5 stars if the finicky clips were not so difficult to work with. Will replace them eventually. I am yet to get struck by a rattler, but expect these will do the job.
