Great product that comes "assembly required." Video is more helpful than the printed instructions
I am a dedicated big game hunter and I also do my own butchering and packaging. A gambrel and hoist makes the task much easier, especially if you are doing it by yourself. I bought a very similar product locally from a big-box hardware store several years ago and looked in vain for another one as they no longer sell them. This Muddy version is the hoist and gambrel you want. It's stout, the rope is NOT the cheesy, cheap polypropylene rope found one many similar ones (looking at you, Harbor Freight) that's hard to hold onto and twists easily. This one comes with a nice, thick (8 mm), soft-feeling rope that is long enough to do the job and strong enough to hoist without worrying. The pulley wheels are nylon, the rest is steel and unless you completely abuse it, you won't break it. One word of caution: The pulleys, rope, and gambrels come in the same box, but assembly is required. Assembly isn't difficult and can be done in 2 minutes or less IF you watch the video. If you try to do it by reading the instructions on the box, best of luck, as they are not very clear.

Works well, though I don't like the "handle" design
It works well, when the rope doesn't get stuck in the "handle" or "rope guide" or whatever you want to call that. I'm working on a re-design of that to combat that issue. Perhaps I will update if I get that fixed.

Looks good, if I can ever figure out how to thread the rope.
This looks to be a good sturdy lift system, if I can ever figure out how to thread the rope through the pulley system. There are supposedly directions on the box, if you can call them that. Very vague and impossible to thread by these directions. Went on line for the Muddy lift and found nothing.

A quality rig, worth every dime!!!
This is an excellent rig made with quality materials. It exceeded my expectations and has performed flawlessly in the field. It is always a bit scary when ordering something like this online, but it far and away better than anything I laid hands on at my local stores. The brake set up was a bit tricky because the on package illustration was a bit sketchy. But basically you rig your block and tackle By: 1) tie a securing knot to the bottom part of the upper pulley so that the rope then heads straight down to the lower pulley. 2) at the lower block you thread the rope through a pulley and go back to the upper block. 3) at the upper block you thread the rope through a pulley and go back to the lower block 4) at the lower block you thread the rope through the second pulley and go back to the upper block 5) *this is the key part--- feed the rope through the last open pulley so that when it exits the block the rope feeds down through the yellow metal eyelet (brake) loop and then hangs freely. This section of free hanging rope is what you will use to hoist with. IF you cannot exit the top pulley and go down through the brake eyelet...it may be because you started the rope through on the top block from the wrong side. If so, the best thing to do is just undo everything but the knot at the top block and rotate the upper block 180, so when the rope exits the top block it should then be directly over and pass down through the brake eyelet. To hoist, pull the rope out and away from the rig and the hoist rope freely passes through the brake. To secure, move the hoisting rope in closer and nearly beneath the rig and release tension so that the rope will slightly slip and subsequently sench into the brake. Continue to let the hoist rope go and it will then rise up and lock into place.

Works and the price is right
Bought this to hang deer. Killed a deer and hung it. The deer was probably 90 pounds and this worked great, the brake worked fine. My uncle had beefier model from HF that was less than $11. The only thing was his instructions showed using the brake as the anchor. We re-did it like this one and it was good to go. It's rated 440 pounds, that's a good one to get for the money if you re-do it to actually use the brake, LOL. Update: Killed another deer and this one was over 100 pounds. Still had no trouble lifting it with the system and it stayed locked off even as I was skinning the deer and tugging on the skin to get it off. I have no complaints so far, nothing has bent or broken and the system worked great allowing me to hook up the deer on the ground and lifting it completely off the ground. EDIT (1/03/14): Ended up processing 14 deer this past two seasons and it worked great. It still looks new. I screwed a 2x4 between two ceiling joists and attached this to those with lags. It really works well and doesn't even seem to get that dirty. It hangs out of the way when not needed. Great purchase.

Not using it for game
I have been trying to find a pulley system to lift my bicycle off the floor. The two units I bought for the purpose worked, but it was quite an effort to lift the bike. After doing a Google education on pulley's I determined I needed more than single pulley's to make this work easier for me. There was another system on Amazon that had 2 three wheel blocks, but the reviews were such that while it would be much easier for me to raise the bike, I wasn't sure it would last. This system has 2 two wheel blocks and it says it has a 4:1 lift. I took it to mean for every pound of force I exerted, the system would lift 4 pounds of bike. It worked perfectly. I made a couple of wire rope slings that go around the handlebar and the seat. Those slings hook over the ends of the gambrel bar. The locking arm works well. I do have to engage the lock while standing on one side of the bike, and release it while standing on the other side of the bike. Too bad the maker offers this strictly to hunters. I would think with minor modifications, this can be repurposed for several different lifting functions.
