Moen Is The BEST But This Faucet Strainer They Could Have Improved
I have all Moen products in my home from faucets, to anything they sell and their quality has always been beyond the best with installing it about 12 years ago and it sill looks like the day I got it and intalled it. I know some sink strainers are not the most expensive like faucets are, but have to say Moen took a realy chep way out when making these. I had no problem installing the strainer and they did make that very, very nice verses the ones with the big nut that pulls it down on the plumbers putty or a gasket that replaces plumbers putty. Two things Moen could have improved and one I have to buy different strainers.... Moen made these out os plastic and not metal and not saying anything is wrong with plastic, but Moen manufacturing them like this I never expected with how high quality their products are. The huge thing with the straners are they do not have like others where you have to push down on the tensin clip to create your seal to hold water in the sink. Moen made these bascially flat and being all plastic their is no weight to the at all. With it not having a spring clip and basically looks like part of a flat head screwdriver this is what determines if it goes down into the slot to keep water in the sink or a turn keeps it up and away so water can drain. The big problem is if you are dumping any water in the sink or just running the faucet with these being plastic they just turn all by themselves and drop right in that slot holding the water back in filliing your sink up with water. I did turn my upside down awaiting new stainless steel strainers, which should be coming tomorrow. I did try their gasket verses plumbers putty and had a very tiny drip and then used plumbers putty and the drip was gone on both. On the botom where your drain attaches they did include a nece metal nut and the nylon washer that slips into the plastic drain pipe and has the best way I can explain it a "T" on the top of it to cover the plastic pipe. Rubber ones were used in past and they of course rotted out and got hard and you had a leak, but you never will with nylon. Very nice they did that with the nut and including the nylon washers, but their is one more thing. When you use their lock nut underneath it which is very solid and on the drain itself unlike other ones that have that really big one on them that always strip out and you need a new one due to it just slips over the strainer when tightening. So major improvement by Moen on that having it the way they do with a very good lock nut which locks it all together to seal. The one thing they should have done and why they did not I have no clue is when the strainer is in the sink it has the treaded part that goes down to connect to your drain pipe. They made it relatively short and not sure why they did not make it a little bit longer with their being so many different kinds of sinks made by all different companies. Would I buy this again from Moen? Yes I would due to their design being way better than anything else out there available. The strainers I know would never hold up being plastic and especially with pouring some water down the sink or just running the water they turn and drop right in filling up your sink creating a seal. Maybe they have better ones and will email on that one. Here is a tip for anyone that has a "Double Bowl Sink" I know plumbers and not knocking them do all the time that is wrong. When you are washing something do your soap suds seem to take forever to go down the drain or back up the other side of the sink? If they do here is the problem.... Not sure if they think just one drain going into the wall it just needs one (1) trap and tie both bowls of the sink into that one trap and it will work just fine. No it will not... What happens is when you are using one sink bowl all that water goes to the connecting pipe to the other sink bowl and that includes soap suds too as why they will rise and back up that other sink bowl. Each sink bowl requires one trap installed on each of them and then both traps are then tied into the drain pipe going out. A trap is to prevent sewer gases from coming up through your sink or anything else so they do not enter your home and make it smell. Having one on each sink bowl and if you have a triple sink bowl you then need 3 traps total. The water that remains in the trap to prevent sewer gas coming up also stops the soap suds from coming up the other side with the water inside it holding them back from doing it. Amazon has all the stuff you need if you have only one trap and need to add in another one for the other side of your sink bowl if you are having this problem, which I am sure you would if you have a double bowl sink and only one trap was installed. One more tip... Plastic pipe is 100% better than metal pipe due to it does not rust and barely anything will every stick to it like it will with metal pipe. When you tighten up the plastic nuts you make them pretty snug and then give it an hour and tighten them a little more. Then in about a week do the exact same thing again tigthening them up a little more. Also, you should periodically check them every year to make sure they are still nice and snug due to little drips can happen with plastic pipe and nuts where metal it will not with it getting corroded in. By far plastic is the best way to go for sure and if you ever have a clogged drain this is important. If you use drain cleaner, which in my opinion never works and needs to be rotted out, some drain cleaners are not made for plastic and can cause a chemical reaction. Plus, never use drain cleaner on plumbing that is very, very old with it being caustic if the drain pipes are in bad shape you can now create a leak. This happened to someone I know and they created leaks in the pipes all over the house having to have walls and floors opened up to put in brand new, thinking a little drain cleaner would not hurt, but cause thousands and thousands of damage having to pull walls and floors to get at the pipes to put new in.

Threads on inside. No purpose. Clutter and bacteria catcher.
It is threaded on the inside. This will catch food particles and bacteria. It will need cleaned constantly. Should have been a smooth surface direct to the drain underneath. Terrible design. Definitely going to make someone sick.

Gasket Issue Settled
I received two of these and didn't understand the gasket issue. I received a thick neoprene gasket and the paper or fiber gasket. I read the questions and reviews and came to the conclusion that Moen failed to include the thin rubber gasket for the top side of the sink. I called their customer service and was told that I am to use plumbers putty on the top surface of the sink. The underside gets the thick rubber gasket and then the paper gasket before putting on the lower cup and securing ring. The purpose of the paper gasket is to reduce the friction when spinning the lower cup. This makes no sense as the lower cup and the tightening nut are two separate pieces and the cup does not need to rotate. Perhaps they were the same part in an earlier design. The woman said she found an instruction sheet and would e-mail it to me. Otherwise I find it to be sufficient quality.

Important info left off website
Unit was returned. This can only be used with stainless steel sink basins. If the sink drain thickness is greater than 0.25", this basket strainer will not work.

Looks good, easy to install
These are fairly inexpensive baskets and not what you'd call deluxe or designer, just "nice." They are, however, pretty nice and they installed easily. The inner basket handle which serves as the stopper valve grip also is made of plastic but has a nice chromed finish which looks very decent and not at all cheap. It seem like some force WOULD break this part but I can't think of a reason to exert force on it so if you break it I have no idea what you were doing. Would buy again, these are so inexpensive it makes me think that contractors buy uglier, cheaper things just to be jerks.

WAY cheaper than buying a new kitchen sink
I have a double bowl kitchen sink and one of the drains broke. First thing I thought, I have to buy a new sink. Started looking at prices and just about fainted???? I ordered this Moen drain assembly, my sink is a Wessan, but couldn't find any parts for it anywhere. The assembly fits pretty well, except the edge of the drain lip isn't quite flush with the sink bottom. But it works and doesn't leak.
