Good lock, very poorly designed bracket
Strong and hard as a coffin nail. 16.8mm is the diameter of the steel, not the metal+vinyl. If I carried this in my backpack it would be 5 stars. Unfortunately I carry it on my bike, using the shoddy bracket they provide. When riding, the lock jiggles up and down. Since the bracket holds the lock too close to the frame, the lock slams against the frame and damages it. The bracket needs to be longer to prevent this problem. After two months of use the vinyl is already starting to crack, shown in the picture. The vinyl needs to be fiber reinforced to prevent this problem.

I ordered this and the ONGUARD Pitbull Mini, kept this
I ordered this and the ONGUARD Pitbull Mini at the same time to compare. First of all... the actual weight... which is very difficult to locate online. I weighed both on a postal scale. The PitBull Mini, lock only(Not cable), weighs 2lbs 8.7ounces, or just above 2.5lbs. The Brute Mini weighs 3lbs 0.9ounces. That's 0.9 ounces, not 9... so it's barely above 3lbs. They are also exactly the same size except the shackle on the Brute is thicker(18mm vs 13mm). The comparable Kryptonite lock, the Mew York Fahgettaboudit mini also has an 18mm shackle but weighs 4.55lbs. The security rating for the Pitbull Mini is 83(without cable) vs 97 for the Brute Mini. Both have the same 4 way locking mechanism, so they cannot be opened or turned even when the shackle is cut once, so it would require two cuts to open either of them(like the Kryptonite FU but not the Evolution Mini). For the extra security with only 1/2 pound of weight I kept the Brute Mini. I have Pitlock skewers so I do not need the cable. I carry the Brute Mini on a Timbuk2 Rump Roast hip pack and barely notice it at all. The locking mechanism is very robust so it can be touchy... but I lubricated it as advised in other reviews and have no trouble. Just make sure the shackle is completely inserted in the base and the key should turn easily.

Bike saved by how long this took to cut through with an angle grinder
So I've been lugging this heavy thing around on my bike for a few years. It rattles, and the plastic mount was cracking, but today that extra weight was worth it because I came back to find my bike still where I left it but with the lock almost cut through (see pick). Apparently someone was at it with an angle grinder for a while showering sparks around the subway station, and passers by stopped him, called the police and he was arrested. I fear with a smaller lock it would be gone by now. Thank you to the BART staff who called the police and kept an eye on it until I was on my way home, and thank you to the strangers who rather than rushing for their train stopped and restrained the thief while the police came.

Sturdy and amazingly robust lock
I've bought two of these locks and I'm about to buy the third. I used them to keep my bicycle secure in San Francisco, which is notorious for bike theft. My two previous locks ended up badly damaged but prevented my bike from getting stolen. The last one withstood sawing, prying with a crowbar (judging by the dents on the bike frame), and burning (torch?). The lock is good to tie the frame or a wheel to a rack, but not long enough to tie a back wheel and frame, for instance. But I guess that's part of why it's so secure. It's also heavy, so not very comfortable to carry around, although it comes with a holder to install on the frame. Again, good, my first one withstood sawing for what I guess was quite a while before the thieves quit... All in all, amazing lock, definitely worth the price.

Great lock with a good bracket
I've been using this lock around the DC area for the last few months. The "mini" size means that most of the time I can only manage to get the lock around one of the bike's tubes and the structure to which I'm locking. That's OK for me since I have locking skewers on my wheels, but if you need a way to secure your wheels too you should opt for a larger U-lock or add a separate cable for the wheels. The lock also comes with a nice (although still plastic) bracket for mounting to the bike. It's still plastic, but it feels much more substantial than the cheap-o brackets that have come with older Onguard locks. It's a bit hard to describe, but the U-lock snaps into the bracket for transport and then there's a spring-loaded release latch for removing the lock. The bracket mounts securely to the bike and I haven't (yet) had the U-lock fly off despite riding around the pot-holed streets of DC.

Good product
It is a little difficult to install and use, but it works as advertised

Good sturdy lock - maybe a lot of unnecessary plastic
I've always liked Onguard because they're nice sturdy locks for less than Kryptonite and Abus. My only problem with them is the crappy plastic mount. I've had a couple break on me while riding and the only reason I knew it broke was due to loud sound of the lock clattering across the road. Lock held up fine and just came out with a few scratches. I decided to upgrade to the Brute from my older Pitbulls because I like the thicker shackle (16.8mm vs 13mm). It may only be worth a few more seconds but nothing is going to stop a determined thief. There does seem to be a lot of plastic in the bolt section so we will see how it holds up over time.

Great, really tighten the mount on your frame
It is hefty and I trust it (though I use it with a cable lock too). The mounting on my bike is rattling loose a little. My husband assembled it for me so it could be him or it could be lacking a little in sturdiness, but so far I trust it! It’s easy to lock, but ifyoure like me and keep your keys on your wallet it gets hard (don’t be like me)

Could be a tiny bit bigger
Great lock but a little too small and the key lock half turn makes it awkward to lock. Feels secure though and we’ll see but fingers crossed keeps my bike safe in London.

Best bang for your buck
I was working at a university for a couple of years. Those places are bike-theft central, the students will take anything that isn't tied down. Someone tried to go through this lock with bolt cutters and failed miserably, they didn't even make a dent, just scratched the coating. This is the cheapest good lock you can buy. It is thick enough to thwart bolt cutters and small enough that you can't slip a bottle jack inside it to pop it. I did all my research and this was the best deal for an effective lifetime lock. Just put some lubricant in it at the start to keep the U sliding in and out easily. If you want to go a step up, take a look at the high end kryptonite locks, specifically the Fahgettaboudit U-Lock. I'm not sure about the other review currently on here which is mostly about aesthetics. That poster seems to think that locks are about looks or something. I would ignore that one.

It is kind of small.
It supposedly requires a grinder to break, which is why I bought it. Hopefully my bike does not get stolen with this new lock. If it does, i am dropping the review.

Was OK until all my keys stopped working
I had this lock for just ver a year then, suddenly, none of my keys function. No amount of oil or lubricant could unstick the pins. The warranty involves shipping my lock from Canada to the UK. Not sure if it's worth the effort :/
