My little ones favorite

My 3 year old granddaughter played with this for 4 days straight!

strong magnets!

My 3 year old had another fishing pole with an actual reel, but it frustrated her because the magnet was too weak and the fish were picked up by metal screws. When you get the magnet on the right spot on these fish and insects, it makes a solid connection. After we caught fish for awhile, we went around the house to see what else we could 'catch'. This magnet is strong enough to pick up her small play pots, pans and lids. We also picked up her magnet train (from Ikea, great idea for connecting train cars). She did get bored with it, but she is a little old for this at 3 1/2. I'm either going to make the fishing line longer, or attach the magnets to a toy fishing pole with a reel and find some fish she can catch in the bathtub. That reminds me, the fish didn't hold up well when she put them in a glass of water. The images peel off very easily where they get wet. Yes, I do know these fish aren't made to get wet. My 3 year old, on the other hand, knows all fish belong in the water. Any wood toy like this would peel and swell, of course. I would buy this set again. I did get it half off, not sure I would pay full price. My daughter loves to pretend to fish, and this set is well designed with strong magnets and fish that don't come off the hook too easily. I'm not sure if it's fair to take off a star, but that's life when you let parents rate things that don't keep our kids interest for very long. If I found this when she was 1 or 2, it would get 5 stars. If (or should I say when?) your toddler chews on this, the design WILL get chewed off.

Nice game with endless learning opportunities for toddlers

I purchased the Melissa and Doug Fishing and Bug Catching set over the holidays to give to my then 20 month old daughter for Christmas. In short, my daughter really enjoys playing these games and has quickly "caught" on how the catch the fish and bugs using the magnetic pole and net. What's really nice about the set is that with a little imagination from the parents, it provides many different opportunities for toddler age children-- hand eye coordination to pick up the pieces, spatial recognition in putting pieces back into place, vocabulary and education if parents what to talk about the different animals or colors or shapes, learning about taking turns with parents, and so forth. The set is well made, with nice colorful pictures overlaid on wood pieces and board. As one reviewer pointed out, the edges of the pieces are subject to some wear with extended use, but in the end, it's not preventing us from playing the game and my daughter doesn't mind. One of the more frequent complaints is that the spaces where the pieces fit do not have pictures to indicate which fish or bug goes in that location. While I do think that was an unfortunate oversight, we've been using that opportunity to teach our daughter about looking at the shape of the piece and figuring out which space looks like the same shape. She has caught on with time, with some success. In the end, my daughter loves the game and will request to play it. As with most things at this age, it only holds her attention for 15 to 30 minutes or so, but she continues to come back to it on a regular basis. I suspect she'll outgrow the game in a year or so, but for now, we're happy with the purchase.

Entertaining for a 2 Year Old

Although it does say 3+ my almost 2 year old enjoys this very much. She loves to "fish/catch" the different creatures and also puts them back in afterwards. Love that it offers two different kinds of activities. She will play it over and over again. Cute set!

Overall we like them

I wanted to take the time to review this product to address a few things I had read in other reviews and the description in the listing. First, I read a review stating that one of the magnet wands wasn't strong enough to pick up the pieces. I specifically checked on every piece and that is not at all the case with our set. The magnets pick up just fine. Second, I read a review about the wood being different & feeling cheaper than the other M&D products. I completely agree- it's made from a different, much lighter wood than our other M&D puzzles. Third, I read a review stating that there are no pictures under the pieces, but the description states that there are. I had been hoping that the product had been updated to have pictures underneath- it has not. There are no pictures below the pieces to help a toddler get them back in place, which makes the puzzle harder but also gives it a bit of an unfinished, or lesser quality, look. Lastly, my kiddos seem to love them, I like that they provide more stimulation & skill practice than a normal puzzle, & I got them on sale! So, overall we're satisfied.

Perfect toy

Melissa and Doug is always my go to. I love the quality and variety of options available. These are great for fine motor skills and my toddler always feels accomplished after being able to grab each piece and place them back. Such a fun puzzle highly recommend

Les enfants aiment bien s'amuser avec les casses-têtes aimentés!!

Le seul bémol ce n'est pas nos anciens casse-tête en bois pour la robustesse. Après quelques utilisations les images et le matériel s'éffiloche.
