Almost perfect multi-use bag
Excellent quality, this bag is almost perfect if you need a small daypack. I've used this bag as a range bag, laptop briefcase, taken it to conventions and outdoor markets to carry stuff I buy, carried food and water in it on some short hikes and bicycle rides, and used it as my carry-on when traveling by plane. It's large enough to hold a day's worth of clothes, a small laptop, two 100-round shotshell cases and cleaning equipment, and has plenty of attachment options. I had a mini rolly-poly on one side (holds a 32oz Nalgene bottle, trash, and other misc. stuff), a 10x4 water bottle holder on the other side, and Maxpedition's personal first aid kit pouch on the back. The CCW pouch can also hold a 50 oz water bladder, but that is a very tight fit and reduces carrying capacity in the main compartment, as well as makes the bag uncomfortably heavy to carry. You don't have to use this as a sling bag either. The main strap can fold into the CCW compartment so it's out of the way. The two D-rings at the top allow you to attach another strap so you can carry it like a messenger bag. Alternatively, you can detach the straps at the base, attach a waistbelt and wear it like a buttpack. Maxpedition's site markets the use of this bag as a tactical or hunting bag that can be used alongside a rifle or shotgun slung over the other shoulder. This doesn't actually work, because the bag will naturally try to rest in the lower-middle of your back and the strap's padding encourages the pack to ride as low on your back as possible. You can't carry it up high near your shoulder the way a normal backpack would ride, because the strap's design doesn't allow it. The strap is padded more heavily in the very middle of it where the two D-rings are (check out the provided picture of the dummy wearing it), and the bag will slide around as you walk so those 2 D-rings are right on top of your shoulder. If you try to carry this bag on one shoulder and a shotgun on the other, the shotgun won't carry well because the bag will be in the way. The picture provided by Amazon of the bag resting on a dummy is pretty accurate (click the black or OD green color to see it); the pictures on the Maxpedition site show the pack riding up higher near the shoulder when viewed from the back, and the bag just won't wear like that no matter how much you tighten the strap. The main downside of this pack is the tapering at the top. I could fit my small 12.5"x9" laptop, but just barely due to the tapering and I had to really work the computer into the bag. If I didn't angle the laptop correctly in the bag it wouldn't fit without me hearing the case crack, because the bag's material is so tough it won't flex enough for my computer to safely fit in it. In the end I sold this and went with the larger Kodiak Gearslinger since that bag could hold my laptop and do everything else this bag can do. The other downside is the price. As of me writing this review, the Khaki version of this bag costs about $114 and due to the tapering at the top the main compartment holds slightly less than 494 cubic inches (a little less than 8 liters). Considering you could buy a normal 40L overnight backpack from North Face for about the same price, this bag is quite expensive considering how much it can hold. Having said that, this bag is far more durable than your normal internal frame hiking pack, so what you're really paying for here is the material, novelty of the design, and brand name. As others have said, this bag will get uncomfortable if you overload it since it only has one shoulder strap. The small side-strap with the whistle reduces the load somewhat, but is no replacement for a second shoulder strap. If you use it for what it was designed for (murse, small daypack, range bag), this bag is great and I haven't seen any comparable bags like it on the market that allow you to carry it on your back and easily swing it around and carry it on your chest. Overall, this is a great multi-use bag that will stand up to pretty much anything you throw at it. The main downside is that it will only fit small laptops and is quite pricey for the carrying capacity you get. If you have a laptop that's 8" wide or smaller this bag will work as a laptop carrier, but anything bigger won't fit. Despite using this bag for other purposes, the fact it couldn't easily hold my laptop (I ended up using it mostly as a computer bag) was the killer for me and the reason I sold it and bought the Kodiak instead. Maxpedition does market this as a laptop carrier on their website, but the shape of the bag doesn't really allow such a use, hence 4 stars out of 5.

Finally, a Gearslinger that can haul full-size paper and folders too
With so many reviews posted for this bag, I'm going to restrict myself to just two points. Ok, three points. First off, these are first impressions only. I assume the bag will wear well and likely be among my possessions that my children will have to allocate when I'm gone (if my beautiful bride/widow doesn't take grab it). That said, buyers should be aware that this bag arrives stiff and cranky, not too much unlike yours truly. I'm sure that with use, the bag will soften, but be aware if you plan to have it delivered to be immediately filled and on the trail with you. My only suggestion to improve the bag, so far, is that an integrated drink holder would be nice. It's no surprise that the bag has none, it's obvious from pics and specs on Maxpedition's website, but this is the Cadillac, er....Lexus of gear bags; for this price a bottle holder could be included. Alternatively, how about a discount code for an accessory so I can afford to buy the add-on holder? For now, the elastic string with locking nut, on the rear top of the bag, will suffice to use to lash down a bottle. It seems secure, albeit horizontal and not easily grabbed while wearing the bag on my back. Aside from that low-level gripe, this baby is just right. I've been on a quest to find a durable sling bag with military/tactical styling and features, that besides hauling a wide assortment of gear, can hold a decent-size book as well as 8.5 x 11 paper and file folders without bending or folding them required. Malaga will suit me on the hiking trail on weekends and the city street during the week. Which brings me to my real complaint: Somebody has got to standardize how the specs on these bags are measured and communicated. This is an endemic Amazon disorder, but I'll confine this comment to sling bags. Why do some bags, even within the Maxpedition line, list measurements of capacity and pocket sizes that are estimates, while others are precise? Why do some include a stated dimensions and volume for the main compartment, while others do not? It's impossible to get reliable specs, making it very difficult to select the right bag for an individual's needs without resorting to trial and error. I had to order, pay, and return four bags to determine that the Malaga has the features I need. Even Maxpedition's website, which offers a great deal of good info, is internally contradictory at times, let alone contradictory to the respective listings on Amazon. So, let my serial ordering and returning be advisory: if you have specific carrying capacity or features requirements, research carefully and be prepared for some guesswork anyway. I would have benefitted from having a B and M retailer who carries these products locally so I could have gathered empirical data. But I had no such luck. For now, I'm giving the Malaga four stars because it is so stiff that it impedes use. However, if the bag softens up with use and wears as well as expected, I suspect if will be adding that fifth star soon enough. Compared to other similar bags, the feature set on the Malaga and the build quality are superior. Admittedly, it's possible that the Maxpedition's bags are overbuilt for the demands many, perhaps most users will make of the equipment. So it's likely ,depending on your specific needs, that there may be a less expensive, but entirely suitable alternative product for you to consider. But if you're seeking to use the bag to transport standard paper and folders among your gear, the Malaga is just right. Also, for what it's worth, the box this bag arrived in reeked of cigarette smoke. I hesitated to bring the box into my house. Thankfully, the Malaga within, while it did have some quick off-gassing to do, did not pick up the cancer stick fumes. That's not a product issue, but I'd be curious if others report the same shipping issue.

You pay for quality
Just got my Malaga Gearslinger today and have to say everything I expected, I already have my work Tech bag which is the Monsoon Gearslinger "black" and wanted a small backpack better than the small backpack I had for family bits on day trips etc. This works out well checked all the reviews on YouTube and can be more organised now :-). The only downside and it's not a biggie is the handle doesn't feel as rugged as the Monsoon not a problem someone pointed out on YouTube and I agree. The seller was fantastic got in today on Friday placed the order on Wednesday earlier in the week and packaging was really good, Not in the amazon box, sent via royal mail - Thank You All in all very happy

Perfect day bag
Perfect day bag. Got this with a OneTigris mesh bottom bottle holder and it's the perfect day bag. Sits well without drooping down like other sling bags I've had do, tons of storage and organization options, fits my Surface Pro 4 (Type Cover only) in the back compartment without issues. Great for a long hike or a day in the park or kids' soccer games. Holds plenty of basic stuff (light first aid kit, flashlight, rain jackets for me and two kids, three water bottles, sunscreen, bug juice, snacks, battery pack, cables) without bulging. I've tried tons of bags before this, and this is the one that works for me. My background/context is ten years military and a hiking/outdoors enthusiast for what it counts, so not just urban/biking which is honestly what it gets the most use for.

Great bag.
Love this bag. Very well made and just the right size for my kit I want as hand luggage. My only complaint would be regarding the fiddly strap system used for attaching other side pouches.

Versatile day-to-day bag.
Really good bag for everyday use. One shoulder strap will never be as comfortable as two but its advantage is that you can access your backpack without taking it off. Also I love the option to swap sides of the shoulder strap from time to time. It's not a big bag but you can put so much more things on it with the help of extra pouches and straps which makes it unique and customizable. There are many clever pockets inside to keep your things neat and secure. Still you do not want to much weight in it for too long.
