No 4.5 Stars so 4 is it.
I purchased this satchel, "Murse" or whatever you want to call it to replace a worn out Brand X and on whole am quite pleased. Except. My gripes are just a few Nits to Pick based on YEARS of owning/carrying/using these kind of things for a number of decades. My BIGGEST gripe is the shoulder strap/"pad" as comes with the bag. The pad itself is FAR(!!) too narrow, IMHO, and also has a tendency to slide to one side or the other. Which way it slides isn't consistent except to say it is ALWAYS away from the needed direction. Also, there is NO "Padding" encased whatsoever from what I can tell. It is just a modestly wider panel that is too slick in construction so it slides along the strap as well as your shoulder/neck region. Oh, and as it slides ot will Lovingly scoop up a sliver of shoulder/neck flesh and PINCH the living CRAP out of said body part! You are NOT going to accidentally fall asleep while wearing this thing, Nosiree! Next is the main compartment closure cords where they exit the grommet attached to the folding bag part circumference. The cordage will NOT easily cinch down and allow the pinching device to keep the bag opening securely closed. In order to effectively close off the opening, it requires two (2) hands and you need to cinch down one cord, restrain it then do the other side in the same manner. Rinse, Lather, Repeat multiple times if you want to get the bag top opening "mostly" closed and secured. To me it is a PITA when I need to access something quickly or repack the bag after removing an item. Next up is the very modest (!) grab handle that is attached near the top of the bag and situated between where the shoulder straps are sewn. This seems to have been an oversight by the manufacturer in that it is puny when compared to the bulk of the bags construction. IF it had been made of, say one INCH (1") material and TWICE as thick, I wouldn't be skeered to pick the bag up by this strap, but as it is, it feels like Love cheated Death everytime I use it and it doesn't RIP loose! Now I've gone and jinxed it and it will crap the bed next time I use it. Oh, well. Lastly is the "waist" strap. Or as it SHOULD be known as the "WASTE" strap. Fess up, Maxpedition.... That thing was added as a cruel joke, wasn't it??!!?? There can be NOBODY short of a Keebler Elf, Lindsay Lohan during her drug addled anorexia/Auschwitz survivor days who could REALLY and HONESTLY secure that strap around their "waist," could they?!? Maybe someone's THIGH, perhaps, but it is of such Lilliputian dimensions as to make it a silly afterthought from my look at it. SHEESH!! So far that is pretty much all the gripes I have and otherwise i appreciate this bag and it is carried with me EVERY time i leave my house as it holds some modest Trauma medical supplies, my personal meds and a spare Subcompact semi auto pistol and spare magazine or two. Even though the sniveling i present here may be of little to no concern to others, NONE of them are cause for me to seek another bag at this time. As for the main shoulder strap/moveable pad, I'm looking for something like a seatbelt neck cushion thingie to help prevent pinching of my neck. No biggie. And if Maxpedition made the IDENTICAL bag but another 25% greater capacity (in all dimensions including compartments) I assure you I'd be whipping out the plastic to buy one. Oh, and I'd probably buy the "Right Handed" version, too. I currently have the LH model (which works fine) but I'd like to see if it would "ride" any better on my body. The LH version I have is slung over my right shoulder with the bag hanging over my left hip. I need to have my right hand/hip accessible to grab my CCW after all.

Nice rugged design and materials
I had been looking for a quality shoulder bag to carry my myriad of gadgets and personal gear in. I had tried fanny packs, daypacks, nylon briefcases and many other styles of 'bags'. Each had strong points but each also suffered from the inability to carry what I wanted, how I wanted. Call it being picky but why put forth the effort if you can't be successful. Try a different approach. And that is where the Maxpedition Jumbo bag comes in. Is it the perfect bag you might ask. Answer is plainly NO. But it so far has met all my needs with little to no difficulties in performing as required. Pros: Constructed of heavy canvas and strapping, it looks like a man's bag and not a unisex purse or ladies gear in use by a guy. It has heavy duty zippers so I fear not of having the proverbial blowout when zipping thing up. It has lots of room in the main compartment. With the few extra pockets external to the main compartment, I can safely say you can overstuff the bag to the point where it is heavy to carry. Lots of nice colors to meet most needs. I chose the nuetral biege color which helps it 'blend' in to avoid the helpful comments like 'Nice purse ya got there buddy' and such. It features probably the best designed shoulder strap and cushioned pad I have ever used. The strap slides within the pad and allows the bag to move with you not against you and then return to hanging vice falling off your shoulder when on one shoulder. And when cross carrying, the strap doesn't bite into your neck. I have carried this while out for the day and not had any problems like before with other bags. Also I have both hands free when cross carrying and can't lay it down and forget it like a briefcase style bag. Body side of bag has nice large padded cushions to make carrying comfortable. A list of what I carry includes .... Large biker style credit card / wallet organizer Checkbook VX-2R Dual band handheld Ham Radio transceiver (size of pack of cigarettes) & accessories in a small pouch in main pocket. (I'm a ham radio operator) Diabetes care kit (meter, strips, alchol pads, record book, etc) in small pouch Tube of glocose tablets Vial of spare medication Eyeglass hard case Blackberry STORM2 cellphone AC charge cable for STORM 2 small notebooks (appx 2.5"x3.5"x3/8" ea) Small 10x/20x magnifier loupe (for examining coins - I'm also a numismatist) Small leather holder for my business cards A few pens and pencils Small LED flashlight Large lockblade folding knife Small foldup screwdriver/hex toolkit Large ring of car & lock keys Even with all this, there is still room in the main compartment for a few more small things. Cons: It would be nice to have a couple more small closable pockets on the outside say for storing my cell phone. In the company's defense, they do provide optional (@ additional cost) accessory pouches and such to 'expand' the carry volume. But that would approach overload to the streamline design of the bag in a day to day carry as I use it so I opt to NOT add those. Since the bag is design primarily as a over the shoulder hiking bag, it has a water bottle pouch which is non-functional for my day to day carry needs. I use the water bottle pouch to provide easy access my eyeglass case and cellphone. A couple more clip on rings or snap hook places would be a very useful addition. All in all, overall a 5 star rating but I dinged it 1 star for the cons in my opinion.

Fits iPad Air in a case
I bought this mostly to carry my iPad. As a bonus it can carry a bunch of other stuff including water and some granola bars. I bring this when I go downtown, sometimes I stuff a light long sleeve shirt in there in case it gets cold. The buckle on the main strap is great for when I’m wearing a motorcycle helmet, I can quickly detach the strap to take it on or off or to just change the position/orientation of the strap. It works great when on a motorcycle, I have it adjusted so it rests on the seat behind me and takes the weight off of my shoulder. It’s a great bag and worked exactly as I expected. I own and have owned dozens of maxpedition products in the past so I pretty much knew exactly what I was getting. I’m looking at the bag now to see what else I can add. Oh it fits a tall 40 oz stainless kleen canteen with a stainless cup on the bottom. Also holds 32 oz nalgene and a double insulated vacuum (can’t remember the brand) this was the most important thing for me. Of course the bottle pouch holds anything much smaller than a nalgene as well. I think this is great for boating too, holds all the legal stuff for boating, flares/flare pistol, registration and a handheld vhf fit nicely inside. This is great for day trips. However I wouldn’t use it if you’re going too far on a bicycle as the bag will have a tendency to swing and throw off your balance and chafe your shoulder. In that case I use my pigmy falcon backpack.

Works great for a light daypack alternative
The outer pocket is just big enough to hold a Nalgene bottle, and you can get two 18oz insulated bottles in the main pocket with a bit of room to spare for snacks and sunscreen. Don't skip the waist belt! It totally keeps the bag from working its way around in front of you. It's built like any other Maxpedition product so everything's a bit stiff and you can probably pass it down to your kids.

Simply the best!
Totally incredible quality. Unbelievably useful and a good size so the you don't load it up to 80 lbs. yes it is a holster but that is not what I use it for. I'm sure if you live where you are allowed to carry it would be incredible but not in Canada. I struggle to keep packs light but this is great for a day pack sightseeing etc. I love this bag and yes ok it is my handbag but it is so convenient. Even has a home for my nalgene steel water bottle.

I love this bag
I love my Maxpedition bag. Tough, functional and looks good. I get complements on it all the time. The webbing allows it to be accessorized with other pouches, which I have done. The temptation to do this can cause the price of your bag to balloon alarmingly. By the time I had added an M1 Waistpack, as well as Janus, Anenome and Barnacle pouches, the total cost of my bag had snowballed to around £170. But on the other hand I now have a bag that is likely unique, For all I know there is no other Jumbo Versipack in the world customised like mine, and that has a certain appeal. A word of warning though, Blackhawk speed clips are far superior to Maxpedition Tac Ties for attaching accessories. It is also important to have realistic expectations. While wearing my bag in *VERY* heavy rain, I found that the front zippered, side and top pockets did soak through allowing their contents to get wet. The main pouch with its rain skirt remained bone dry inside, as did the "concealed carry" pouch and the front pouch under the main flap. One of the good things about this bag for outdoors use is it can be worn under a rain poncho and accessed without needing to take the poncho off. Also have realistic ideas about the size. I found that it is strictly a little small for my 12" TF300 transformer tablet, although by loosening the buckle straps I can get it inside the main pouch. It does stick up a bit when I do this. Maxpedition gear is very expensive. And once you start customising, it can be hard to stop. This is a lethal combination. They are however very good bags. This wont be my last. I'm planning on buying a Monsoon gearslinger in the future - oh and to that end I'll make one last suggestion. If you plan on accessorizing, pick a colour you like to begin with. That way accessory pouches can be moved between bags if you ever buy another.

Great bag. Using it for my Olympus OM-D E-M10 gear. Fits camera, and a few lenses in main compartment. Lots of other compartments for accessories. Only complaint is the will not close the rain fly completely. Very tough. Will outlast any camera bag.
