Yes, it’s squirrel-proof, but not raccoon-proof!
We love this bird feeder. So do the birds. The squirrels hate it. The raccoons…well, they seem to find it a puzzle worth cracking. It is absolutely squirrel-proof: they try and try and chatter a lot when they can’t get anything out of it. But the raccoons just pull it over and scoop the seeds out, never pressing on the bar that closes it. It’s hanging from a diagonal tree trunk so that we can refill it from our deck—we rigged a pulley system to raise and lower it, and the raccoons just climb up the trunk and pull the feeder to them. I think if I could find a horizontal branch to hang it from, the raccoons wouldn’t be able to do this, but there really isn’t one near me. So please buy this to keep the squirrels out and feed the birds, but I hope you don’t have to deal with raccoons!

Squirrels Can Defeat Anything You Can Think Of
This is a great feeder. It's the third one of this model we've had. Each of the previous feeders lasted at least 10 years. In the end, we had to replace our last one after the plexiglass window insert broke on half - probably from too many freeze/thaw cycles over too many years. It takes squirrels a while to learn how to defeat it, but squirrels are curious and devilishly smart. Nothing is more fun for them than defeating something designed to keep them away from something tasty. And they learn from watching one another. Once one has found a way around a feeder, more are soon to follow. Our squirrels have found several ways around it using their back feet to reduce the weight on the bar that closes the feeder. They put their feet on the back side of the lever, on the roof, or on the pole that hods up the feeder. The picture I've included shows one of our more acrobatic squirrels. Do I mind? No, they earned it.

Perfect choice!
A perfect choice for our needs. We live in a heavily wooded area and because we like to feed the birds, have trouble discouraging the squirrels from raiding our feeders! Nothing plastic discourages the squirrels. This closes down and keeps the squirrels out. It absolutely does – – it makes them nuts!

Sturdy, Well Functioning Hopper Bird Feeder
This is my second such feeder. I bought it for a "backup" so that when I take down for cleaning the original I have an instant replacement... "my" birds would not miss a moment of feeding. The hinged, counter-balanced perch mostly assures that pests or marauders will not rob you of expensive bird seed. Why? It's because the "perch" can be adjusted for the weight of birds or critters that might visit the feeder. Heavier, undesirable birds or mammals can then weigh down the perch, and doing so closes off the access holes to the bird seed. It's not fool-proof~ I once had a bold squirrel that would cast himself a far distance from a tree and smack onto the feeder's roof! After several visits of closing the door, Mr. Rodent learned to cling to the top and dangle down to the feeding ports and steel my seeds! The four sections of metal mounting post are stout and they interlock perfectly; no fuss. The hanging bail/handle is well made and has a perfectly centered "bend" in it which helps keep the hopper from tipping and ending up crooked. The feeder is well made; durable strong metal. The paint is, I believe, "powder-coated" which should last for many years without scratching. I'm contemplating spray painting mine with a good exterior paint in order to have the hopper blend in to its natural surroundings. The only negative factor, for me, for this feeder is the small plastic base that screws onto the feeder's bottom. Currently they are all made of plastic rather than metal, which would not become brittle in bitter cold. Also, I'd like to see the base come threaded for attaching the feeder to plumbing pipe~ able to be snugged down tightly in place. The current base allows the hopper to twist in high wind or if a critter sits on it. I've seen full grown turkeys flutter up and perch on the top of there hopper, causing it to twist & face a different direction. Another option I'd like to see would be to have predrilled holes on each side which the owner could attach a suet cake feeder on either or both sides. The manufacturer could even include those as an option!

The last bird feeder you will ever buy
I owned a pet store and we sold these. Many customers returned to thanked me for the recommendation, no more wasted food. I myself have had the same one standing for 28 years, an occasional spray of paint and brand new again. The only replacement part was the wooden perch that the squirrels chew up out of frustration. I now use a vinyl coated metal tomato stake cut to size. The squirrels try but eventually give up. Great invention, try one.

Large seed capacity
So happy to have found this feeder after a falling tree crushed our other one during a windstorm. It is nearly identical to the old one that we got from llbean over 25 yrs ago. Shipping was fast and assembly was a breeze. Love that it comes with hanging option.

So far, so good
I've had this feeder for a couple of days and I'm really happy with it. The birds love it and so far the squirrels haven't found a way in. It sure is fun watching them try, though.

Brilliant
Saw the double sided version of this when in San Francisco recently, absolutely the best feeder we have ever seen but could not find in the UK. Exentually found this via Amazon. Delivered quickly, very well packaged and I reckon we will pay for it within the year from less spillage and wastage of seed on ground. Absolutely first class product

Do NOT BUY - Kills Birds!
We purchased this feeder last year. It's not very well constructed. The flimsy metal is connected to a cheap plastic part that holds it to a skinny pole. That said, it seemed to work well enough. Birds loved it. To death as it turns out. Today we discovered a bird had become trapped inside the feeder. So sad. We immediately took it down and threw it out. Never buying from these guys again.

Adding the window made it no longer squirrel proof
I've had the earlier version of this (without a window) for twenty years and aside from having to replace the perch a couple of times it was perfect. The new model adds an acrylic window so you can see the seed level without opening the cover. Unfortunately so can the squirrels who discovered that with enough persistence (and no one has more persistence than a squirrel when it comes to getting food) it can break the window. At first there was only a hairline crack and I figured good, that's the worst they can do, but I was wrong, as you can see in the picture. Gradually the crack became a break large enough for a squirrel's tongue and then it was game over. Fortunately the acrylic window panel was easy to remove. i'm replacing it with a much stronger polycarbonate.panel.

Don't be fooled - NOT squirrel-proof!
I had high hopes for this feeder but just one week after installing it I am quite disappointed. For the first two days it was hilarious watching our red squirrels' attempts to game the feeder, but by the third day the game was up and the squirrels WIN! They quickly figured out how to use their bodies to wedge open the anti-squirrel mechanism and feast upon the birdfeed. But maybe your squirrels aren't so smart? Furthermore, 1) The "mounting post" that comes with the feeder is a joke - the feeder is only about four feet off the ground. 2) The tray below the feeding ports looks like a good idea, but in real life just as many seeds go on the ground as with any other feeder. 3) Heavy rain inundates the feeder - rain enters the feeding ports, dampening the seeds and wet debris accumulates in the tray beneath them, making a mess. 4) As soon as the seed bin is down to about a third full, seeds tend not to slide down towards the feeding ports - especially after it rains (see #3) - thus requiring a "helping hand". On the positive side, the feeder is of very sturdy construction, although the metal edges of the roof and the roof's "locking" mechanism are very sharp so beware when filling the feeder. Overall, it's not a terrible feeder, but I rate it with two stars because it doesn't deliver on the main feature that it promotes - NOT "squirrel proof'!

Finally purchased this bird feeder after trying to keep the squirrels from attacking my old feeder.
It took me a little while to assemble the feeder and to anchor it in the ground. The pole which came with it could have been higher so once in the ground, the feeder only sits about 4 feet off the ground. I have been readjusting the spring mechanism for smaller birds. When the spring was set at "4", the squirrels easily figured out how to get the seeds from the side of the feeder. Have now set it at just above "2" . The smaller birds can easily feed from it and the squirrels are going crazy trying to get to the seeds. So far, I think this is the feeder that will finally keep the squirrels from devouring all the seeds in the feeder.
