Out of the box, sewing in five minutes.

I LOVE this little workhorse! Ordered it out of frustration with my very expensive, very temperamental Pfaff which sends me the message that "the machine needs to rest" about every hundred stitches, including the first hundred each time. I wanted a mechanical machine with nothing electronic, no readouts, no nothing but a stitching machine. I know the Brother name, although this is the first I have owned. I am an experienced seamstress and quilter with little need anymore for fancy stitching. I quilt. I make gifts. Amazingly, I placed the order in the noon hour and the machine was in my hands by 5:15, out of the box and threaded minutes later and I am now making its first quilt. It is foolproof. The threading instructions are printed on the machine, solid line for top thread and dashlines for bobbin winding, which is smooth and reliable. DO NOT USE ANY BOBBINS WITH THIS MACHINE OTHER THAN THE SIZE AND NUMBER THAT COME WITH IT. They are not interchangeable. If you buy this machine, I would advise ordering a large supply of bobbins simultaneously. You may or may not be able to find these you-know-where when you need them and once you begin sewing on this machine, you will likely leave your computerized model for more complex or decorative projects. This machine is quite portable, but it is not lightweight or light duty. I am about to make a denim quilt and I am confident of sailing through it with only needle and tension adjustments. The stitching is smooth, needle position range is wide and there are plenty of utility stitches, even for a sewist like me. If I had an issue with anything on this machine, it is that the spool pin seems to be fixed and I prefer to have mine stand perpendicular to the machine. Aside from that, to have this little hoss delivered to my house in less than five hours for under $200 is the deal of the year.

Nice

I have never used a sewing machine but wanted to take up a new hobby. Along with the written directions I also utubed tutorials and seems like something fun. I just used it the first time yesterday and smelled something burnt , motor, idk, for a bran spanking new $200 "heavy duty " , machine I was a little worried but I'm keeping it, if anything happens I will update my review. Reasonably priced great for casual sewers

Seems pretty sturdy. Only thing I dislike is the work light is too dim. As I get older I need more work light, and this one is simply not great

Versitile

I purchased this machine because it said heavy duty. I am sewing new banners for our town that have been printed on vinyl, but need the sides sewn shut and pockets in the top and bottom. This machine will sew through 8 layers of vinyl without and problem. It squeaks a few times if I'm now going fast enough, but hasn't failed me yet! Using a size 18 needle and upholstery thread. Also sews fine when I am quilting. Not sure I like the reverse lever, it's hard to move.

High Expectations

I can’t fully review the mechanics of the Brother ST371HD sewing machine because I received it yesterday. After I use the machine for a while, I will add to my review. The reason I’m doing a review before using the machine is to express my amazement regarding the FAST delivery of the sewing machine. I ordered the sewing machine on a Wednesday & received it early morning on the following Friday! (yesterday). I live in a rural area & I allow a week or more for my “many” amazon deliveries. This delivery was a pleasant surprise. Good Job UPS & Good Job Brother Sewing Machine Seller! I do want to say that I did research before purchasing this sewing machine. This is my 2nd Brother Sewing Machine. I purchased my first Brother Sewing Machine in 1975. I used it until it broke in 2013. I loved that machine! It was dependable & easy to use. I don’t sew a lot but I sew enough crafty & mending projects to warrant owning a sewing machine. My mother & my grandmother were Great seamstress. They made their own clothes plus mine & my siblings. I learned to sew from them, mainly from my grandmother. One thing I do want to say is that in the QUESTIONS area for this sewing machine description, several people ask which compatible sewing machine case to buy. Brother answers with a “recommended” case. When comparing the size of the Brother sewing machine with the “recommended” case, the width of the Brother Sewing Machine is more than the width of the “recommended” case. I asked a QUESTION regarding the width discrepancy & received an answer from Brother saying there is no “recommended” case for this particular Brother model. I did find & ordered a Sewing Machine Case with larger measurements than the Sewing Machine so I hope that case works for my lifetime with my new Brother Sewing Machine. Also when doing research, I found a similar but slightly better Brother Sewing Machine. However, the other Brother Model was not available or was out of stock at all the bigger well known shopping chains, to include Amazon. That Brother Sewing Machine model is ST531HD. It’s a few dollars more & has a few more features than my Brother ST371HD (ST = Strong & Tough, 37 stitches, & HD = Heavy Duty). Of note is that when my almost 40-year-old 1975 Brother Sewing Machine broke, I replaced it with a comparable Singer Sewing Machine. I think it was Singer’s Anniversary Model for that year? After several attempts at trying to learn how to use it, I gave up because it was too complicated for me. It’s brand new sitting in a closet for the last 7 years. After I use my Brother sewing machine, I will update my review.

Sturdy machine but has a few problems.

Basically this is a good sturdy machine, but it is not for beginners. I’m a very experienced sewer. It took me some time to work through all the instructions. The bobbins are easy to wind and insert. Just make sure the thread is caught in the little hook. The machine light is really dim so you will need an extra light in the work area. My two greatest difficulties are the needle threading mechanism and changing the needles. Threading the needle with the needle threader is awkward. It’s hard to see what you are doing unless you tip the machine back. The needle must be in exactly the right position for this to work, and it’s hard to see if the thread is really through. Changing the needle was also difficult. The screw head is really tiny, hard to loosen with the tool provided. I had to use pliers to pull the needle out and push the new one in. Again it’s hard to see that area unless tipping the machine back. The machine does a good job of sewing once you get things figured out.

Runs nice and quiet

This sewing machine runs nice and quiet. It works perfect for all types of fabrics that I have tried. I use at for demen, thick, thin, stretchy... no problems at all.

Super easy to use!

My sewing machine arrived quickly. The DVD would not play, however there are detailed instructions on YouTube which was incredibly helpful. The machine is easy to thread and very easy to use. I am a novice and I'm loving trying all the stitch options. It sews through thick fabric and multiple layers. It is very nice looking, but I don't like the cheap plastic cover and will be purchasing a cover/ case. Overall, can't say enough good about this machine!!

Love this sewing machine!

After finally admitting that my Singer was ready to give up the ghost, I purchased this Brother machine and haven't looked back. It doesn't have as many bells and whistles as other machines, but the fact is that I never use most of those bells and whistles anyway. This was still has lots of features. It does everything I need it to do, and it does it well. This is one sturdy machine, and will take on heavy duty fabrics without missing a beat (or a stitch!). I love it, and would recommend it for the novice and professional alike.
