No draw back to this telephone wall jack.
Although it seems like it would be easy enough to manufacture a basic telephone wall jack outlet, Leviton has put some added thought into thier 40249-W. The outlet itself, looking from the outside, seems simple enough, and it is. What sets this outlet apart is the documentation that was included. The documentation is basically a basic wiring diagram which tells you which color wire goes where. This may be unnecessary for the majority of people who may install such fixtures as a part of their job, but to the weekend warrior or someone who is not terribly handy, the diagram saves time and frustration. Yes, I suppose you could just remember the order of the wires as they were installed on the previous outlet, but this can also become complicated. For example, I found that I was replacing an older 6P6C outlet, which is basically the same connector, but with added positions and wires for supplementary functions like grounding, or low-voltage power. Anyways, without the documentation, questions arise as to which wires go to which connections... I had four connections on this new Leviton outlet, which replaced a old no-name outlet with 6 connections, but only 4 wires connected, with no labeling. Thanks to the documentation, installation was a breeze, and it functioned correctly the first time! Mounting screws were included in the packaging. PROS: + Inexpensive + Mounting screws included + Installation instructions included + Good build quality (feels solid, and the connectors use multiple washers to ensure a good connection CONS:

Fine, but there could be one improvement.
So these are fine. One thing I would change, is most outlets like this have the wires inside color coded (Red, green, yellow, black) so you know where to attach your wires. This outlet instead has a letter (R, G, Y, B) printed on the plastic next to each screw. This works, but the letters are just bumps in the plastic, a bit hard to see, and I would have preferred the colored wires.

Finally, a contemporary quality phone plug
There are no wires from the screws to the plug here, finally. The plastic is thick and stiff like the plugs were a generation ago. The hardware store plugs have separate wires that are fragile, and there is an interior plastic plug with the wires in it that may pop out. In addition, the hardware store plug covers seem to be getting thinner each year. Regardless of the price difference, the quality here is worth it.
