Comparison with Dual-Fuel lantern
If you're considering this lantern, you might be considering other liquid-fuel pressurized lanterns, too. I'll share my impressions after some home testing and a weekend of camping, and compare it to the Coleman Dual-Fuel (coleman fuel and unleaded gasoline) twin-mantle lanternColeman Premium Dual Fuel(TM) Lantern with Hard Carry Case that I've had for a number of years. Advantages of this model: * In my unscientific comparison, this kerosene model is brighter. The jury is still out for me, as I haven't done an apples-to-apples comparison with fresh high-quality mantles, and I have a mesh globe on the dual-fuel right now. But both are in the same class, as far as brightness goes. There are other models of dual-fuel or coleman-fuel lantern, so this doesn't necessarily mean kerosene is better. * Kerosene is arguably a safer fuel to store around the house, and it's cheaper per gallon. Whether it's actually cheaper per hour of comparable light output (the important comparison) is some math I haven't done yet. Note that this lantern's runtime per tank is lower. (kero: 5.75 hour on 2 pints, dual fuel 7 hours on 1.3 pints). At these quoted rates, the kerosene lantern burns .34 pints/hour, vs. .18 pints/hour for the dual fuel (with somewhat less light output). So, dollars per hour looks pretty darn close, actually. Advantages of the dual-fuel model, vs. the kerosene: * More convenient to start up. Pump it up, stick a flame in, and turn the knob. The kerosene lantern requires priming with some other fuel to get going (a small bottle for alcohol is provided). I find I don't really mind the extra minute or so (I frankly enjoy that sort of thing), but I'm concerned about having another container of another fuel to manage - to keep filled, keep upright, and just keep track of while packing, transporting, camping, and storing. Lose that little bottle, or let it get drained out (it doesn't seal), and you'll be forced to improvise (um...maybe hand sanitizer?) or sit in the dark. * Significantly more compact. I thought the dual-fuel lantern was a big beast until I got the kerosene model. * Cheaper. I got it with the hard case (which has worked out very well) for about 2/3 the price of the kerosene lantern alone. * More aftermarket options - aside from the aforementioned case (available bundled or separately), there are aftermarket glass and metal mesh globe replacements, and the side-mount reflector, which I've come to like a lot. The kerosene model has no knob on top, so it can't mount the reflector. * Significantly quieter. I like the sound these make, and it brings back some memories, but the kero is not just noticeably louder but has an extra element of turbine-like, rushing-gas sound. * More runtime in the tank (7 hrs on high), and more runtime per unit of fuel. I can usually get two evenings out of my dual-fuel, which covers most of my trips. * Much better for low lighting levels. It's very hard to get the kerosene model to run steadily at a reduced light level; the dual-fuel can go much lower in brightness and still burn steadily. * More reliable. Maybe I'm just new at it, but on the first night at camp, I had a crazy flame-out with the kerosene model that engulfed it in flame and left the top half darkened by soot. After swapping in a Peerless mantle from oldcolemanparts, it burned brightly and steadily on the second night (unless I was flirting with minimum brightness levels). Yeah, it guess I'm making a case for the dual-fuel. It wins out on convenience, quietness, and better low-light control. Unless you have a strong pull to use kerosene as a fuel, e.g. you already have a supply around for other purposes, I suggest you keep life a little simpler. I don't regret adding this kerosene model to my stable, as it adds some fuel versatility and great maximum brightness, but if you're looking for your first liquid-fuel lantern, I wouldn't start here. I'm still giving this four stars, as it does a good job of being what it is - a sturdy, large, well-constructed, and very bright kerosene lantern. It looks great, with its deep green paint and large, more spherical globe - very classic Coleman. I wish it was possible to turn the light level down more, and I wish the top was held on with a nut in the center rather than by the ends of the handle pinching into holes in the inner structure (the manual still refers to a hut). I also wish the alcohol bottle had a way to close, and had a better angle at the end of its straw that didn't tend to squirt alcohol across the top of the pre-heat cup if you aren't careful. Suggestions for a better pre-heat solution are welcome! p.s. Mine initially had a jarring, unnerving sound when set down, of glass hitting metal harder than it ought to. The heat shield at the bottom is shaped a bit like, um, a 4 legged spider, with the outer part of the "legs" bend slightly upward where the glass globe rests on them. They were bent only slightly, though, so the glass was basically jiggling around and bottoming out when set down. I bent up the "feet" of the heat shield a bit with pliers, so that they supply some upward pressure on the globe; now it is better suspended between these feet and the lid on top, and I think it'll be less likely to crack over time.

Propane lantern seems safter
I ordered this about a month ago and have used it 4-5 times. The globe showed up with a minor chip but has been usable. Every time i get it pressurized it begins to leak from between the tank and heat shield. It also has a bad tendency to completely fill the globe with flames coming out of the top, even traveling under the heat shield. It is neat when it does work correctly, but i question the safety of this product. I’ll be looking into a re-seal kit to try to get this to work propery. In the meantime i’ll stick with the propane.

Supper bright Lantern and Fuel is cheap compared to White gas or Propane
People have been burning Kerosene for light for a very long time, but these lanterns give off much more light than the old lanterns with a wick. Cost of fuel is much less the either propane or White Gas. Other then when you are filling it there is no Kerosene smell. the only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is the preheating, having to fill the little cup and burn it to vaporize the kerosene before lighting the lantern. But it is worth the effort in my opinion. With the amount of time that I send out camping with groups of kids this thing will save me hundreds of dollars a year. I will be buying a second one.

Recommend This Lantern.
Perfect adjunct to my propane lantern. May even become my go-to. That depends on the availability of replacement globes. To date I've been unable to locate any and response from Coleman has not happened. First the pros. Several reviews mentioned that the brightness was not adjustable. I found this not to be the case at all. When turned all the way up, it brightly illuminates an area 30' in diameter when hung at an elevation of 5' and a full tank of kerosene will last 6.5 hours. When turned down, it provides a softer glow just bright enough to light up the area in front of a tent giving a feeling of security for really young campers. The standard Coleman lantern hiss is not as loud with the kerosene fueled lantern. Apparently the hissing noise bothers some folks but it's actually just a part of using a pressurized lantern. When hung, the bail (handle) doesn't get as hot as the propane or white gas models. I've burned my hand a couple of times in the past but it shouldn't be a problem with this lantern. The filtered, filler funnel works great. It special design allows you to top off the lantern with no fuel spillage. With K-1 kerosene selling at a bulk price of $4.50 a gallon, that's an important consideration. Some may ask why kerosene? The answer is simple. Shelf life. If stored properly, K-1 remains viable as a fuel for 5 years. There have been cases where kerosene was found in remote cabins that was 10+ years old. It had to be filtered through a rag but it afterwards it was still useable. Don't try this with gas or even "white gas". Now for the cons. The need to have alcohol to preheat the generator tube can be problematic. Initally I was having to undo the top of the lantern to put fuel in the pre-heating cup adding to the risk of damaging the mantle or worse, breaking the globe. After a few uses, I found that the bottle easily fits through the closest "match hole" so the disassembly problem went away with use and experience. The only other problem has been a lack of a replacement globe/s. If Coleman ever gets back with me, that problem might be alleviated. Only time will tell. UPDATE!!! Found that Coleman uses a seperate supplier for "replacement" parts. Called them up and ordered 2 replacement globes at a very reasonable cost.

Coleman Kerosene Improved/Retro?
I have ordered two of these 639C in the last year. Back in 2021, I ordered one (picture 2) where the font has the pump with a black plastic twist lock style pump mount. This is typical of newer style fonts and pumps. The date of manufacture was 2021. The latest one I ordered on Amazon was dated 06 2022. And, they changed the font to the old style pump that has the clip retaining ring instead of the plastic twist lock. I don't know why but I like the retro look of the old school clip retaining system. The 2021 pump can't be replaced with any thing but the plastic twist lock. So. The latest 2022 stamped font has the old style pump locking ring. Perhaps that will motvate some to buy it now because 2022 style of 639C most resembles the older styles due to the font. Something to consider when buying now. It has that RETRO look with the old c clip pump. The font pump mount is totally different, and 2021 has that black plastic notched mount vs. the 2022 old school c ciip. But it now before they run out. BTW, Coleman service is amazing. If you need to call them regarding warranty or defects, their 800 number was amazing and the service person was fantastic in resolving my issue with my 639C that arrived with a defect. Also, great to have kerosene when every one buys up the Coleman Camp Fuel during a disaster or outage.

Lampião muito bom
The media could not be loaded. Claro que é um produto caro para nossa moeda fraca, mas caso você esteja por aqui lendo esse comentário tenho quase certeza que você é uma pessoa privilegiada, na minha opinião vale muito apena.

Nice product, would purchase again
I purchased two of these lanterns because of the solid reviews given by individuals on the .com site, who have purchased them. Very bright light output on high,a bit of a nuisance to preheat, but this worked very well when preheated with methyl hydrate, it's nice to have the option of using a lantern that uses readily available kerosene at about half the price of camp fuel. To light the alcohol I use a "Flex Refillable Butane Lighter" that I picked up from Home Hardware. you can watch similar demonstrations of this process on you tube. Run the lantern on high and it runs very well and clean. I think that it has less odor than a camp fuel lantern, and kerosene, I think should be safer to store. What I didn't like was the origin of the globes, I replaced them with two USA manufactured red lettered globes that were made for the old lanterns, these fit perfectly. Each of my lanterns came with two #11 mantles and an empty alcohol squeeze bottle, but did not come with a funnel. As far as mantles are concerned, if you can't find Coleman's #11 you can always order Peerless #111 online, a suitable crossover. I found that my 639C700 kerosene lantern fit nicely into the black plastic case, item 290-763T, The same one that houses my 295A700 dual fuel powerhouse lantern. So I have two of these cases on order from Amazon All in all, a well constructed lantern as far as I'm concerned. I am happy with my purchase.

Really bright!
It works great. Lots of brightness, long run time on a fillup, just need to pump it up every hour or so. It used cheaper fuel than naphtha and it’s easy to light.
