Seems pretty good so far. Included are some tips to make it better.
One of my tanks is a 3 gallon nano cube and it used a mini-HOB but the extremely smallt amount of clearance on the shelf it's on made cleaning it a total pain and after a messy cleaning I neglected it for awhile and it started to clog up and the flow became a trickle. So I decided to get the ZooMed nano canister so I'd have an external that would be more easily reached and maintained. I did have to cut the uptake/outlet pipes to fit the size of the tank, though. But that was no big deal and the instructions tell you you can do this if needed. Same goes for the hoses. First off, yes the filtration is backwards from standard with chemical and bio before mechanical. From what I've read this was done intentionally. Looking at the design it seems having the pump pull from the outlet end of the canister was more efficient and easier on it than having it pull from the inlet end. But this is EASILY remedied. Simply fill the first chamber with mechanical filtration first. I'll break down what I did. Skip the carbon. If you're not an experienced aquarist then know that we don't use carbon unless necessary. If you need to remove chemicals such as medications then you use it, otherwise it's a waste of money replacing it over and over (also, it's effectiveness diminishes far more quickly than the once a month replacement the instructions call for.) This will also free up the first chamber for other filter media. Starting from the bottom up, I put a very small amount of the included ceramic rings in to mostly act as a support for a tiny amount of shells/crushed coral for pH/KH reasons (very soft water here.) Above that I placed a nylon pot scrubber. If you've never heard of this trick before, due to the amount of material looping and weaved together with large spaces for water flow, nylon pot scrubbers have been found to have far more surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize than most other bio medias. Outperforming favorites such as Seachem Matrix and plastic bioballs. Some people fill entire layers of canisters with pot scrubbers. For this nano canister, a single one will do. If you do this just make sure you get a purely nylon one with no added soaps or other chemicals. If you think this all sounds crazy just do a search for pot scrubbers in aquarium filters and see the evidence for yourself. I then put in a DIY Purigen pouch. The standard prefilled pouch would be too big for use in this particular media setup, so I made a custom pouch out of nylon pantyhose. This is another old DIY trick. Simply buy a cheap pair of pantyhose (I got a pair for $1.25) and then cut a section out to the size you need plus a little more for knotting. Then tie a knot in one end, fill it with whatever you need, then knot the other. You've just made a fish-safe, extremely fine mesh filter bag and have plenty of material left over to make more. And yes, it'll hold Purigen no problem. It does mean you can't regenerate it in the pantyhose as the bleach will dissolve it, but with such a small amount my setup requires and how long it'll last on a tank of this size, I'm not really worried about it. I'll just replace it as necessary. Above that I placed a large amount of polyfil. Again, if you've never heard of this trick, it's another old time favorite. Plain old 100% polyester polyfil with no flame retardants or other chemicals. This is commonly sold marked for filter use in small bags for an inflated price at fish stores. It's the exact same stuff as the large, bulk bags found in craft stores for 1/2 or 1/3 the price. Will polish your water crystal clear, just make sure the bag lists 100% polyester and no other additives. Are you sensing a DIY theme? There's so many tricks in this hobby to improve performance or save money. Then for the course mechanical filtration above that, I went with another pot scrubber. Why not? It fits the bill. The size of the holes and density of the weaving make it function as a course filter, and it won't degrade like a sponge and it's easy to clean. If you want even more media, you could remove the sponge around the uptake tube in the second chamber and stuff some in there around it. I just left it in. It'll act as more surface area for beneficial bacteria anyway, so no reason for me to remove it. This setup provides superior filtration and polishing compared to the included stock media alone. I've been enjoying seeing the polyfil slowly darken as it filters out things normal sponges would let through. As for performance, the flow rate seems good and the filter is virtually silent, only being audible as a quiet hum when you put your ear near it. For the people having problems opening it, yes the lid is very tight but it has to be to create a watertight seal. But here's the trick to opening it with less difficulty: After making sure both locks are in the open position, open the fill hole on the top and place your thumb in it. This keeps a vacuum from forming as you try to open it and provides a place to get some leverage. Firmly hold the filter body in one hand, and with your other slowly and steadily start pulling up. Make sure your thumb is against the inside of the lid helping to push up. It'll take some effort the first time but it should eventually pop off with no issues. If anything changes with the filter and I encounter issues I'll update my review accordingly.

Aside from purging, it's a great little filter.
Gripes: It's hard to get all of the air purged out of it. It could come with more fittings to get the end of the tubes out of the tank in different directions/orientations. It's really quiet, has a ton of capacity for media of your chasing if you want to DIY the media you're using. I'm really happy with the unit and depending on how long it lasts I'd definitely purchase it again at this point.

Love This Canister Filter!!
I bought this Zoo Med canister filter to replace a horrible submersible filter that came as a kit with my 6.5 gallon aquarium. It works flawlessly, is silent and does an excellent job on my tank. I have a pretty heavy load in my tank as I have a betta and 3 African dwarf frogs, in a planted tank. Setting up the filter was easy but I previously had an Eheim canister filter on my last tank, so I have experience with canister filters. I did run into 1 issue during set up as I could not get the top off, so I called Zoo Med and their customer service is excellent, which says a lot. They answer the phone, so there’s no waiting for an email response, etc. What I ended up doing re: the top, was to put my thumb in the fill hole and pull up from there, which worked perfectly! The canister has a divider in the middle, so it gives you plenty of options for any type of filtration, you want to add. It comes with a round blue sponge for mechanical filtration, that fits in one side, and has a bag of carbon and ceramic media that fits in the other side. I included a pic. of the ceramic media and carbon bag. I opted not to use either on the other side as my tank is live planted, I fertilize my plants and the carbon would filter it out. The carbon is great for filtering out medication in case a fish gets sick and you need to medicate it. Using the carbon bag when done, will filter the remaining medication out of your tank. Just a note, the carbon is very dusty, so be sure to rinse it well until water runs clear, before using it. Using the carbon in a tank that you don’t fertilize/has fake plants, would work fine imo, but I’ve only had live planted tanks. I also did not use the ceramic media included as I’m a huge fan of Seachem Matrix for biological filtration, so I’m using that in place of their ceramic media, which just boils down to personal choice. I see nothing wrong with the media included with this canister filter. I was extremely happy to find a canister filter for a small tank. This filter also gives you the option of using a spray bar or a diffuser, which is a nice touch. I opted to use the spray bar and I positioned the holes of the bar toward the back of my tank, to disperse the flow, so there wouldn’t be a lot of current for my betta and frogs. I included a couple pics of how I have the inside media set up in the canister. I love the versatility you have with the canister. One flaw with this is, there is no screw to secure the tubing to the spray bar, so it could end up disconnecting. I resolved that by placing a suction cup on the plastic elbow in my tank that connects to the spray bar. That way, if it does happen to disconnect, the elbow is held in place with the suction cup and the water will still stay in the tank. I highly recommend this canister filter to anyone, looking for a good filter, media versatility and to free up some space in a smaller tank. I had the original submersible filter in my tank for a couple weeks before getting this canister. I’ve already changed the floss, cleaned the sponge and rinsed the media in some tank water, as it filtered out plenty, in just over two weeks. Also, this canister filter needs to be at the same height as the bottom of your tank. My tank sits on my breakfast bar and when I first took it out of the box, it seemed pretty light and I was worried my cat might knock it over. But when filled with media & water, the canister is extremely sturdy and have had no issues with it being knocked over. Plus, Zoo Med includes rubber feet for the canister, which silence any vibration and stops it from being slippery/falling over, etc. All in all, this filter and Zoo Med’s customer service get an A+++++ rating, from me!!

Some oddities but I like it.
Before the bad, let me say I quite like this for my purpose. Using it in a 10 gallon divided betta tank, so I wanted something low flow, but that I could have intake and outflow on opposite ends to still keep water moving through the tank. This so far seems to be working great for that. That said, it IS very low flow. To be fair, I am using a lot more filter media than it came with, so that might be slowing it down. I think it will be just fine for my 3 betta but if you have anything with higher bioload might just take that into consideration. The other odd thing is the way they have the media set up. They have it so that the intake water is hitting the biomedia FIRST, which makes no sense from everything I know about how these are supposed to work. You CAN work around that, but it is a little bit difficult to get the biomedia in on the other side, its not impossible for sure. Overall I am so far pretty happy with it for my purpose, but its def. worth knowing about before buying.

It's not the best but it's not horrible.
Yes this filter is "backwards" as it goes through the bio media first, and the mechanical filtration last, which I see why they've done that to help protect the impeller but a little more brainstorming and that could have been fixed... But it is keeping my 7 gallon nano tank crystal clear so far even with leaves and wood leaching tannins and even threw some mud in to add some microbes and stuff and it was crystal clear when I got home from work.

Great nano canister, awesome customer service
I'm very happy about this small canister and the company selling it. It gives more room for my betta to swim in his 5 gallons compared to big bulky internal filter. I chose that style because I didn't want an ugly HOB filter on my rimless tank. I had a little issue with it at first as it was a bit noisy but after contacting Zoomed customer service, I received a new impeller that fixed the issue. Good product, top notch customer service. So I bought another one! Update : I bought a second one and the spray bar had a tiny crack. Customer service is sending me a new one. Top knotch customer service, special thanks to Jennifer who's been extremely nice and patient with me!

Could be better, could be worse.
It was between a 3 or 4/5. I like the small size of it and that it has very small parts that conceals its existence in your tank which gives it a nice clean look. It was very quiet and the flow was wonderful. My only concerns are the impeller (which randomly broke on me in a day which made it excessively loud) and the way it actually works. The water being pulled in goes through the bio media immediately, which makes them super dirty, so I custom cut my own foam and filter floss to fit on top of the bio media, to change that out easier. The water then makes its way under the divider which has just a pure sponge to filter through, which is useless. What I did was cut the sponge down to make it more narrow, and then fill around it with bio media. Still had great flow with all the media and foam i used, which i liked. If youre ready to do some upgrades and hope your impeller wont break, its a great unit. But, at the price it costs, its worth it to get the Eheim 150 (2211) which has equal or better flow than the zoomed 10 had. It can also be concealed under your desk/stand without losing flow. Not to mention it has a reputable name and comes with everything you need without making any adjustments. So spend the extra 30 or 40 dollars. :)

Mixed water is not good.
Pros - 2/3 size of a 5 gallon tank in height and half a size in width. - Very quiet and low noise level - Decent suction, 10G or lower - No kink tubes, length are decent Cons - Tube clips break overtime. - IN/OUT water design is reversed ( IN = Media / OUT = Filter ) - Can only fit a small amount of media. - Aquarium water gets mixed with filtered water overtime. Decent filter/pump but spend a little more $$ for something better.

Not quiet
Thought I'd try this out as all the filter reviews I read said canister filters are silent. I have no doubt that they are but mine was not. It was somewhat quiet the first time I set it up but after that it created a rattling noise and no matter how many times I took it apart to see why, it still made the same noise. My tank is in my room so I cannot use this. Took a bit to setup as there is a lot of pieces and the lid was a struggle to lock and unlock. I will keep it as the tubing it came with is good and I can use the filter inserts for other filters, but I'm a bit disappointed as it was expensive. Presentation wasn't good either; the box it came in was beat up and had some oily substance on it which was disgusting.

good canister filter
At first, I wasn't sure if I would like this filter. You do some basic assembly of the tubes, etc. yourself. The box says it was made in the E.U. which is good. The reason I was in the air at first was that it just didn't feel as high quality as say an eheim or fluval. And realistically, its not. But that said, once it was on and running, I liked this little unit more, and now appreciate the smaller design. The other companies mentioned dont really have canister filters that would work on my 5.5 gal without overpowering the tank. My thoughts are that I will get a couple good years of service out of this little filter- and in that light- I would recommend it to other tank owner
