Useful Portable Butane Stove for Outdoor Cooking and Disaster Preparedness. Secret S'mores Stove
This review is for the CUISINART Portable Butane Stove with Carrying Case. I received a free taxable sample of this stove to review while gearing up for a camping trip. The portable stove measures 13 3/8" wide, 11" deep, and 3 1/2" high. A rack/grate with support arms occupies most of the area on top of the stove and adds another 1" to the overall height when the support arms are facing up. Both the stove and the rack are constructed of a glossy painted metal with a combined weight of 1424 grams which doesn't include the weight of the butane canister. The accompanying plastic carrying case is a basic two-piece black plastic case that is hinged at the back and has two flip latches on the front to keep the top and bottom halves from opening. The case is of acceptable thickness but not rugged, and the case does make it easier to store and carry around the stove. Other than the glossy red color of the stove (and even then), there is nothing to distinguish this particular portable stove from other portable butane stoves. The form factor of this stove is identical to your basic portable butane stove with a two-sided grate, a side compartment for the butane canister, a mechanical lever which slides the butane canister and engages the canister with the gas valve, and a gas valve control knob that generates an electric spark when the knob is twisted to the "ON" position. The grate measures 8" square and there is 10 3/4" between the slightly raised ends of the four support arms that should support most pots, pans, and mini griddles. You can probably use larger items such as full-sized griddles so long as you are aware of potential stability issues and the fact that the burner won't provide coverage beyond a certain distance. One other minor thing to note is that the burner has eight concentric holes versus some other burners which have other variations such as four clusters of three holes or four pairs of two holes. Note: there is an internal metal shield attached to the lever that serves as an additional safety measure by preventing the canister from being engaged when the support arms on the grate are facing down. Although there is nothing to prevent you from operating the stove without the grate, the support arms on the grate provide the necessary clearance between the burner and a pot versus dangerously placing the pot directly onto the burner. Setup and operation of the stove is a fairly straightforward exercise which involves placing a butane canister into the side opening of the stove, flipping the grate so that the support arms are facing up, pressing down on the lever to engage and lock the butane canister in place, and twisting the knob to the "ON" position to ignite the butane. The standard butane canister can be obtained from your local hardware store and in general should last a little over an hour. From experience, it takes about 8-10 minutes to get water boiling in a 2L pot and the overall heat output is good but sometimes needs to be protected from the wind. Overall, the stove is quite stable even when slightly propped up on one end to compensate for the tilt of the underlying surface or picnic table. So far, my favorite use with this stove has been with a mini griddle or pan for sunny side up eggs and pancakes when camping. Besides camping, I like having this portable stove on hand for disaster preparedness and as a firepit substitute for backyard S'mores. All in all, this CUISINART portable butane stove is well-built and easy to operate. I recommend this as a good option for a versatile camping stove and to have on hand for disaster preparedness.

Cooks fast
This camping stove is compact and light, yet it works just as well as the large burner on my kitchen gas stove. The items I've cooked with it so far have all cooked quickly and evenly, and that was with the heat turned down. The online video is great at demonstrating how to setup the stove. Simply insert the butane cylinder with the slot facing up, then engage it by locking it in place. The pot holder flips over for storage in the handy carrying case that it comes in. The one problem I had with the one I received is that the ignitor doesn't work. I tried multiple times, and reloaded the butane cylinder as well. I didn't even hear it click anywhere while turning the butane on. I've used gas grills many times, so I'm familiar with how these work. Although disappointed, this was a minor setback. I simply used a grill lighter and it lit immediately. I looked for a battery but didn't find one.

Has a few minor issues
PROS: + Light weight and compact + Puts out a lot of heat + Won't seat the butane unless the pot holder is flipped over (correct position) NEUTRAL: * I had problems finding the required butane canisters locally. Finally had to order online from Home Depot and wait two weeks for them to arrive. * To ignite you have to turn the valve counter clock-wise until you 'hear a clicking sound'. Actually you have to turn until you encounter significant resistance and then force it some more to get to 'Ignition' (which is not labeled on the burner). CONS: - Some sharp edges. Handle the pot holder with care - The case is a little bit on the flimsy side. - Case latches are a little bit annoying, would prefer something with a more positive latching feel. - Hard to remove label from the pot holder. Be careful removing or you will cut knuckles on the sharp edges. Use WD40 to get all of the glue off of it. There should have been a much easier to remove warning sticker.

Quite a beast cooking with butane fuel, but don't expect to use in the arctic.
I really, really like this stove! Put in the very specific butane canister needed (not the usual refill-your-lighter ones, they don't fit) and it has an amazing flame, I think much more powerful than propane. Worth noting, butane boils at 31 deg F, so if it's winter, better keep the can with you in the tent overnight or you are not going to be happy when you try to light it. Propane boils at -43 deg F, so you've got bigger problems if your propane grill won't light due to temperature. There is a zero percent chance I'm going to be doing outdoorsy things needing use of this below freezing, so I am quite pleased with it!

It's our hurricane cooktop!
I wanted to have a small cooktop for when the power goes away I live in coastal Florida! With electric appliances no way to cook, now I've got a gas burner that's ready to go. I don't expect to take it camping, I expect it to keep me going during the storm. It looks well built and should do the job.

Nice portable stove
Great portable stove from Cuisinart. It does not come with the gas needed to run the stove nor does it have an attachment to hook it up to a propane bottle. This was a bit of a disappointment since having a way to hook it up to multiple sources makes a lot of sense. However, it is what it is and it is a nice little stove that comes in it's own case.

Great Stove and It's Portable
I must say that my past experience with Cuisinart products has been excellent. The Portable Butane Camping Stove is no exception. This is a quality product that really packs a cooking punch. There was virtually no setup except for inserting the 8oz butane fuel canister. Once this was done, the stove fired up immediately and I was sautéing veggies in no time. While I do not camp, this will be a great compliment to my grilling accoutrements. This is a great stove at an even better price.
