Good value, mediocre range.
I really like this handheld, especially the roof antenna that I can attach. Slogging through some mountains brought the range on it to close to zero. I also thought it odd that it's a bit hard to communicate from one model to another. Hours worth of fun on the road and in the car, though. I'm sure I will be thrilled to have this in an emergency, either way.

Performance is not what's advertised
I bought this radio because my wife and I were relocating from California to Florida (making it a road trip) and I thought it would be nice to not have to use cell phone just to reach each other. We were both traveling with our girls, one in each vehicle, a great way to make the trip more fun for them. When I first received the device, it looks very rugged and slick looking like any other Cobra product and that is as good as it gets. On initial testing, the product sounded really good, as long as we were in close proximity and up to about 100 feet. At a range of 300 feet, audio clarity started to drop from good to more static/white noise. With a fairly good amount of tree in our neighborhood plus our metal woofing, we thought those elements were distorting the carrier signal thereby effecting the advertised range. Three weeks later we started our trip and ready to put the device to a real test. Fired the radio up, did a quick radio check at 30 feet, clear as day (love'n it. Did a radio check again at 800 feet, still clear as day (Wow, good bye neighborhood, hello open road) . After we've reached flat open terrain out of the mountain in California, mostly flat farming terrain with zero tall buildings in site, and clear skies, I decided to do one more test to see if the device's reported range holds water. Sent my wife out 3/4 mile out from the cargo truck that I was driving, pressed the push-to-talk button and poke, she could not hear a thing. I could clearly see the vehicle ahead of me. In fact I could almost make out some detail of the vehicle, so it couldn't have been too far out of range. At each button press/release and talk still nothing. She eventually dropped back to about 1/2 mile in order to regain audio. We eventually tried the long range several time with different settings just to have the same result plus a lot of static at each settings. In the end, we decided 1/2 mile is the best we can get out this model, accepted it and move on with our travel days. The girls were disappointed so they ended up using their phones instead, and leave the Cobra for discussion about breaking and refueling strategies. I don't know how Cobra could advertise 38 miles or even 3.8 miles range on this device, where in reality it is way less than. Not very happy with the outcome, but it is now too late to return the device. I eventually gave them to my girls so they can play around on our 5 acres property. I won't tell anyone not to buy this product. But I will say, do your homework and test it before you fully commit.

They actually work long range
I have tried so many walkie talkies over the years, and none of them ever work far enough away from each other to be useful to me. These are the first ones I’ve been able to communicate over a mile away in any conditions. I was inside a metal building, my friend was in a vehicle driving 55 mph and we were able to hear each other for about a mile and a half before we lost signal. The reason I got these was so my wife can get ahold of me no matter where I’m at on our large acreage. There is no cell service and we live in a mountainous area so there are tons of trees, over 100’ elevation change from the house to the creek bottom. We had a medical emergency recently where she couldn’t reach me and I was too remote for her to come get me. These radios work excellent, and I use mine with the earpiece so I can hear her over the tractor or any other equipment. Hopefully we never need to use them, but it’s really helpful to have these for future emergencies. The radios are excellent quality and I expect to get many years of use out of them.

Exceptional FRS Radios
This is my third pair of FRS radios in about three months. I use these daily to set up K9 Search & Rescue problems for my dog in the Rocky Mountain region. It isn’t practical to use radios that require a license for training because I’m always using different ‘subjects’ so that the dog learns to discriminate between the scent of different people. For those who don’t know, the FCC limits the power on FRS channels to 2-watts which isn’t much. In certain terrain, the usable range of these radios can be less than a mile but that’s the downfall of all FRS radios - regardless of the range manufacturers put on the box. These radios can also access GMRS channels and will automatically transmit with 5-watts of power on GMRS channels. This does help extend the range slightly over FRS. We have tried Midland and Motorola radios; they all perform similarly on the respective 2-W and 5-W channels. The difference between Cobra and others is volume, durability, and the user interface. The radio models I have tried that use buttons for volume adjustment are not practical to use. You have to be in the right mode to adjust volume and some have such weak speakers that you can’t hear the radio unless you hold it to your ear. The two main functions of any radio are on/off and volume. Because those two functions are on a dial, the buttons on the front of the radio can remain locked once the radio is set up. This is huge! With other radios, you are constantly fiddling with the buttons to lock and unlock the buttons each time you use them. Lastly, the Lithium ion batteries perform better than expected. I was hesitant to purchase these because it’s really easy to swap out AA batteries in the field. The lithium ion batteries have good life and the indicator gives you plenty of notice when the battery starts to fade. These radios are about as good as they get for non-licensed use.

Working well, mostly
One of the walkie talkies acted weird and reset but was hard to get back to the right channel. It resolved l, finally it just took a bit. Otherwise they have been great.
