4 ½" Small Awl
Listing says 7 ½" long, but that is the PACKAGING it comes in. Actual product is only 4 ½" (115 mm) long. Inexcusable deceptive sales copy, as it is a nice, albeit small, enlarging awl. Handle is flattened front and back to minimize rolling. Clearly designed for more delicate work, but point is very sharp and will easily pierce even full-thickness leather. Metal part is 2 9/16" (54 mm) long and goes from needle point up to 3/8" (9.9 mm) at its widest. Highly attracted to magnet, so suspect it is chrome-plated steel. Based on magnetic attraction, it appears the steel goes into the plastic handle only about 3/8" (10 mm), making me wonder how robust the handle/point connection is. One Star off for deceptive sales copy.

Excellent quality.
Got this for leather crafting. My other cheap chinese ones had a coating on the awl that started to chip off when punching holes. This awl is very sharp and seems very durable so far. I use it all the time and have had no issues. Overall look and feel are superb.

Sturdy and works great!
I use this to start holes when I am installing rivets in a particularly difficult location and also when I need to go through several thick layers. It works great and is very sturdy.

Exactly what I was looking for.
Perfect size. Fits in the palm perfect. Might be small for big hands. Perfect for mine. Good quality.

Love this tool for tight spaces!
There are some tight spots my finger can't fit when sewing. This helps secure my fabric under the machine foot, so that I can sew straight. I'm glad I found this tool. The tool fits well in my hand and is ergonomic. This tool works GREAT!

Good for crocheting blanket borders
I bought this to poke a hole to allow insertion of my crochet hook into the border of a baby blanket. It worked fantastic for this purpose.

Don't know how I managed without this
Exceeded expectations. I was lucky to get this at a competitive price, but frankly I don't know how I've managed without it. Does the job (expanding holes without breaking threads/ fibre) in half the time of a standard awl plus makeshift methods of enlargement. As the awl is perfectly round, it's also a more consistently round hole than what I'd been making. I'd read thisprior to purchase, but it is true, that the design of the handle is ideal. Rather than being round, it is a slightly squashed oval, making it easy to grip in your hand and keep the tool under control. It's easy to go just a little bit at a time, to keep checking the size you are making.

Nice awl.
Needed one that had a larger maximum width, and this one works great!

Stays put when you set it down
I can't imagine why this isn't a feature of all awls, but the slightly flattened handle means that your awl won't roll away when you set it down. Although it's nearly three times more expensive than a standard cheap sewer's awl (depending on the price you pay) and it functions essentially the same as any other awl I've used, I still feel the few extra dollars where well worth it for this fact alone. But additionally, it's well-made, it's compact, and it's ergonomic (at least, I feel it is). My rating isn't 5 out of 5 mainly due to the condition of the awl I received from Amazon. The packaging had been opened and badly taped back together. I don't know if the fact that this had been opened and possibly used/damaged before I received it is the reason that the tip is not quite as sharp as I would like on an awl. However, I've only noticed a problem when I use this with very finely woven fabrics. Because I also use the awl as an extra sewing "finger" to guide narrow edges under the presser foot, I'm constantly picking up this tapered awl and setting it back down. The fact that it doesn't roll away means that I can pick it back up exactly from the spot I set it down without much thought. The hand-feel is very comfortable, unlike those round bulb-handle awls you often find in sewing supply shops, at least for my purposes. So all in all (or should I say, awl in awl?) this is a great little tool!
