Great quick way to have safe drinking water

In April 2023 I went backpacking in Nepal where the drinking water isn’t safe. I used this filter cap and never got sick. I used it for both tap water and water from streams/waterfalls. I love how quickly it filters water for instant consumption. Been using these for years for backpacking in the US and it was just as convenient in Nepal!

best ultralight water filtration system!

the katadyn befree is an absolute game changer! i used to suffer through complicated systems with even more complicated backwashing procedures. befree gets rid of all of that! just put the suspect water in your bottle, screw on the filter and go! the flow is even good enough to use to fill larger water systems that i carry on multi-day trips. BUT the flow rate will diminish over time. this is expected, not a flaw, it happens with all water filters of this type. you need to be aware of two things: 1. keep the filter clean! this is easy. every month or so, i just use clean water in the bottle and push a few liters through. 2. if the filter is left dry for a long time, this will badly mess up the flow. to fix this, just fill your bottle and let the filter soak in there for several hours, then go back to step one and flush the filter with a few liters of clean water. this should do the trick for most instances. if it does not, that means its time for a replacement filter. which leads me to my 4 star review for what is definitely a 5+ star product.. katadyn packages these replacement filters in a resealable storage bag. this is not sealed in such a way that you can be assured that the product has not been tampered with... this is extremely alarming, particularly in this post pandemic world. someone could easily try the filter out, dry it off, and put it back in the plastic baggy and return it as if it were unused. i would caution people who care about their health to order this product from a reputable vendor (ah hem.. im pretty sure i cant name names here, so please use your discretion and do not order this from a website that you frequently get open box products from when you are ordering something "new") anyway, exceptional product, but be wary of questionable vendors when ordering. i contacted katadyn directly, and they confirmed they sell these in non-tamper evident packaging. that sucks, but this product is so good, i'll keep using it - i'll just try to buy it in person when i can.

Filters well and quick flow.

Filters well enough and flow quickly. But both my filters failed the blow test after only a couple uses and a few months of sitting.

easiest backcountry water filtration system

I used the befree in conjunction with a hydrapak when backpacking in the Canyonlands National Park in Utah. There were limited water sources, and one night our water came from a small, murky pond with tadpoles swimming in it. The befree filtered this as easily as a clear stream, and the resulting water tasted just as clean. After a few uses, the silt could be easily washed off by swirling/shaking the filter end in the water. I would wholeheartedly recommend this device. Way easier to use than gravity systems and tastes better than tablets.

Amazing!

This filter is perfect. Paid it with a collapsible bottle from hydrapak and had fresh clean water at the ready all day on a trip to Gatlinburg, TN. It was so much easier to pop into a bathroom fill the bottle from the sink and have some of the best tasting water ever. Like seriously impressed at how crisp the water tasted. 100% will have recommended and will be buying some up to keep on hand when this one finally runs its course.

Inexpensive and effective!

I have multiple water filters, from the Platypus GravityWorks to a simple LifeStraw, but the BeFree has become my go-to. I attach it to my BeFree 1L collapsible bottle for personal use and the Hydrapak 4L Seeker for crew use. It does not have the filtering life of some others, but it is inexpensive to replace. And unlike gravity filters, which have their place, this is as easy to use away from camp as in it.

Great for camping and mountain runs!

I've picked up two of these now for my outdoor adventures. The first came with my 1L bottle and found that was a great size for a day hike or a quick mountain run. I later found a 3L collapsible bottle for camping that works with the 42mm thread size. Both work wonderfully and have definitely saved me from some uncomfortable situations I would have otherwise had if I didn't have properly filtered water!

Love the system, but filter doesn't last

As someone else said, the filter only lasts for "about 100 fills"; I'll add that it's probably more like 60 fills. I used for interior kayak camping for one season (on large lakes) and for the last 2 months of the season I was soaking the filter is strong bleach and thoroughly rinsing between each trip. It ran super slow, by the last trip I was having to boil water as the filter wouldn't fill a water bottle within 2 hours. I've purchased new filters for this season. I have a 6 ltr and a 600ml Be Free, neither filter worked by the end of last year. Very disappointed because it's a nice system when it works.

Great taste. Great flow rate.

Fast delivery. Great product. Great taste. Better flow rate than Sawyer at first but slowed down a bit. Required more pressure after 3 or 4 days of filtering enough lake water for 3 people in 30 °C+ temps. But would still recommend over other filters.
