What can I say?
First of all let me tell you the review on sporttingscopereview.com is completely crap. Don't even read it, it's only going to confuse you. I will try to give a objective review, but it ain't easy, I have mixed feeling about this scope. It's really lightweight, not sure this is a good news or not, but it does help if you have to walk a long distance hiking. The image quality is pretty poor by my standard, at 20x it is ok, at 125x it gets much worse, which, more or less was expected even before I purchased it. Most scopes on the market have a maximum power of 60x, it's simply unrealistic to expect a $100 scope to perform at 2 times of the max power with the same quality. So we know the image quality is bad, the question really boils down to: Is 125x really useful or it's just salesman talk? Well, I will give an answer "yes and no". We went to a bird watching last weekend with the new scope. We also had a 10x50 binoculars and a 15x70 binoculars with us. The weather was great and we had a full sun. Under such condition the 125x does yield more information. At one point we saw a crane caught a snake like creature and was eating it live, everybody crowded before the barska and want to take a peek. On the other hand, under poor light condition, the 125x is pretty much useless. There's a small lighted LCD panel about 50 yards from my house, I usually use it as a yardstick to gauge my optical devices. During night I can barely make out the number on the LCD using either my 10x or 15x binoculars, so I thought it should be a piece of cake for the barska since it has 125x. I was wrong, yes the image did get magnified, but it become so blurry, I still can't make out the number. Actually it was so blurry, initially I thought the scope had focus issue, later I realized the focus is ok, the issue is that the scope couldn't collect enough light to make a clear 125x image. The focus ring is in the front of the lens and it's huge, very very hard to turn, I found it is virtually impossible to focus this thing without shaking the lens. I don't understand why barska make the focus ring so tight, doesn't make any sense! If you are a eyeglasses wearer you need to turn away for something better. The barska at high power has virtually zero eye relief. I found I have to put my eyeballs INSIDE the rubber ring to be able to get a clear view. it's definitely NOT recommended for eye glasses wearer. Some other minor issues, the scope is head heavy and the tripod socket is not in the center of gravity, so when you mount this thing you need to point the scope a little bit higher, then the head will drop a little bit once you let go of your hands -- annoying but not disastrous. The mini-tripod came with is is quite flimsy, but that's not really a major issue either, for spotting scope, you need to buy a very heavy, high quality tripod anyway. So overall the scope does have some major issues, I wish I can spend $3000 on a leica, but that's beyond my reach. If you can overcome some of the issues listed above you can be pretty happy with it and save $2900 for a trip to Alaska, it all depends on HOW you are going to use it. My main usage of this scope is actually at the shooting range, planning to take it out this weekend, I will report back how does it perform. Added Nov 2011: To view my full review: [...]

Quality and Affordable Spotting Scope for 25-100 yards
Buying an AR-15 for the first time, I was confronted with having to zero my rifle. I did not know anyone that could show me; therefore, I had to learn on my own. To zero one's rifle means to make adjustments on the front and rear/back sights, and make sure the front and rear/back sights are aligned. One first has to decide if one wants to zero at 25 yards; 50 yards; 100 yards; or a different distance. To zero a rifle, one has to first adjust the front sight. The front sight is elevation--up or down. Second, one has to zero the rear/back sight, which is based on windage--right or left and vice versa. In summary, owning a spotting scope will make zeroing your rifle easier. How? From your shooting bench, you can use the spotting scope to see if your rounds are hitting or missing the target. Without a spotting scope at the shooting range, you will have to wait for permission to walk to your target, and learn what adjustments need to be made to your iron sights or scope. Having your own spotting scope is good for your hygiene; saving time; and saving ammunition. I do not like renting equipment. The Barska Benchmark Waterproof Straight Spotting Scope that I purchased works well from 25-100 yards. This is an economical scope.

Great Optic for the price
This is a great scope for the price. Remember this does not have ED glass, so if you are looking to see pinpoint holes in targets beyond 75 yards or so, think again. That said for distances shorter, it works really well. I bought a larger 20x60x80 spotting scope and it was unusable beyond the initial 20x power. If you need to see longer distances, read the reviews carefully, make sure it has ED glass (Extra-low dispersion) for sharper images. Be careful when reviewing scopes when looking at the images they provide, they can be deceiving for sure. This scope has a grip and tripod mount. I have used this with the grip but not the tripod so far. Good luck!

a very good spotting scope but I don't think it can reach 125x
I like this spotting scope. But I don't think it is as powerful as advertised. My gun club has one that stays on the rifle range that is only about 40x and it is at least as clear at 200 yards as this one. We always use it under a shelter behind the firing line so it is not in direct sunlight. Maybe I will take it out in bright sun sometime and see if there is improvement. One complaint I have read on here is the focus ring on the front end. I agree it is not as convenient as a smaller knob near the back end but as long as it works smoothly I should easily get used to it. In the case with this one though it does not work smoothly. I think the ring is out of round and as it turns it rubs. There is enough friction that I try to reach it with both hands to make sure the who assembly doesn't move. In that case it really is a long way to reach. Having said all that I hope the focus ring issue will work itself out over time and I can see well enough for my needs. I have a good quality tripod so I don't use the small one that comes in the package. It is quite small but well made. The storage box is a nice feature. Overall with a couple exceptions I am satisfied with this scope. Not worth over $100 but still a good scope.

Good for price.
The eye relief is rather small, but I am able to make out splatter target groupings at 200meters. Clarity and sharpness is not very good at 200meters, but it's workable. At 100 meters everything is excellent. I would only recommend this product for a range spotting scope for groupings/zeroing and nothing else. 4/5 because price is cheap, hard case and accessories are good. The metal tripod is just fine as long as you put one of the legs in the direction of the telescope for weight distribution. Focus is at the end and zoom is near eye aperture, so it's a little annoying to focus while looking through but it's very manageable with steady hands. I can't give this product a 5/5 just because it's not a very good scope, but for $150 it's most definitely workable spotting scope.

Got what I was expecting
At minimum focus (12X) the picture in this scope is simply STUNNING. Boy, if I could get a sight like that on my rifle! Higher magnification has the effect of reducing the size of the reticule. And while the image is less impressive as you increase the magnification, all functions work well enough for use on a 100 yard range--the longest distance I could try the scope out. For the money Barska products appear well constructed, have a nice feel and function as intended. The stand holds it's position without surrendering to a slow 'droop'. The cheap hard shell case is a waste, but looks nice so it's a shame to throw it out. Same for the hand grip. Bottom line: it's cheap and it works fine for my use, but probably not up to snuff for a demanding application. I did get to compare it with our local champ at our club. His scope was noticeably better but, 3 times the price.

Excellent value optic - not photo quality of course
Simple, sturdy and good accessories. Needs a solid full-size tripod or monopod for high magnification viewing while standing. Some chromatic aberration so not great for photography. I paid $179 CDN. It's a great value at that price. Pistol grip handle is useful. The included small metal tripod is useful on a bench or table. Soft carry bag fits scope and included tripod well. High mag focus is excellent but this is NOT a $3000 scope so temper expectations.

I stand corrected. Focusing now works OK.
Optically the 8-24 58mm scope is OK for the price. There is some chromatic aberation but not enough to be a distraction. The zoom range from 8-12 can be hand held, but beyond that the tripod must be used. Correction: My original post stated the focus ring was very difficult to rotate. On the bottom of the scope is a small black screw. Not shown or mentioned in the literature packed with the scope. This small black screw is a FOCUS LOCK. Release this screw and the scope focuses. Not smoothly, but easy enough to focus while looking the through the eye piece. The discovery of the focus lock changes my opinion of the scope. The 8-24x range is quite usable from 8-16x. Beyond that the exit pupil is a bit small. I will be keeping the scope for watching birds and animals.
