Great spotting scope and uses my existing Pentax optics
Updated review after owning for 7 years. Original review below. This continues to be an excellent spotting scope with no issues. It is durable and its light weight compared to 80mm version proved to be a good choice. I would recommend high quality eyepieces as it will perform at its best with those. You can't go wrong with Pentax eyepieces and their water proofing matches the scope for hard core conditions. I have several astronomy eyepieces and while most work fine, one of them won't reach focus over full range of the zoom ...a BAADER Hyperion zoom. The 45 degree prism is perfect for nature and target practice but a little more difficult to quickly aim at a moving target. By the way that free tripod that came with it proved to be a GREAT high quality tripod that is a perfect match to the scope. I don't know if that package is still available but if it is I recommend it. ORIGINAL REVIEW ================ I have several telescopes (I am an astronomer and retired professional photographer) but wanted a spotting scope for wildlife (mainly birds) and target shooting. I have high standards for optics and knew that Pentax would be good based on my past experience wth Pentax eyepieces. I chose the angle finder as that works better for me as you can use a shorter tripod. It also works better for target shooting especially since I wear varifocal glasses. The scope is weather proofed as are my existing 7 Pentax eyepieces that I use for astronomy so it maintains that water proof ability with option to change different eyepieces for different fields of view/magnifications. When you place the eyepiece in the scope a knurled ring locks it in place against a seal. One of my lens is a Pentax 8-24mm zoom lens which has a key that locks into the spotting scope so it won't rotate as you turn the zoom lens. That eyepiece was designed primarily for the Pentax spotting scopes but is an excellent one for astronomy. I have also used several Plossl eyepieces in it and they work fine too although they are not water proof. The dew shield collapses to cut down on length. The scope rotates so the prism and eyepiece can move to the left or right side....handy for rifle target shooting when you want to stay seated. I compared it optically to my TV 85 APO scope. The TV is superior but for more than double the price ....it should be....the difference is slight. I selected the 65 ED version rather than the 80mm to save weight and bulk. The 65s are plenty bright and after trying the larger version I decided the small percentage of time I might take advantage of its additional light gathering wouldn't offset the pain of carrying the extra weight and bulk around. I do a lot of treking and backpacking so this is a very convenient size. The focus knob is smooth and precise...it snaps into focus which is an indicator of a good ooptic. I got my scope in a package deal which included a free tripod. I thought it would be a low quality/wimpy tripod but was a very nice Pentax/Ricoh model that was a perfect match to the scope. I have several tripods ranging from small to huge (I am a professional photographer). This one was suprisingly good, came with a case and even a wrench to adjust the joints and tighten leg clamps. So overall it is a nice scope that can use all my existing eyepieces that have standard 1 1/4" barrels. Material is magnesium with rubber armor coating so should be pretty durable. The free tripod was a keeper and a perfect match for the scope. It also comes with a cloth case. That is also nice although it won't fit with my big zoom attached.Pentax does make a shorter zoom but in my testing that isn't as good as the 8-24. The limiting factor on spotting scopes is the prism...that is what limits the magnification to around 60x maximum. But the prism is the only way you will get a correct reading image (up down and left right correct). A mirror type diagonal will best a prism optically but is impractical for a spotting scope as it would reverse the left right direction. Photographing through the Pentax is possible via a digiscope adaptor from Pentax but I don't have that (I would be interested in hearing from someone who has one though). I made my own adaptor and modified some optics to build my own but not recommended unless you have skill and a metal lathe. Overall though if I wanted to take pictures I would use one of my Nikon APO ltelephoto lens or my TV APO telescope which is razor sharp. But that is not light or compact like the Pentax scope. In the few months I have had the scope I haven't found any problems or things I didn't like about it. Have been using it lately to keep track of a pair of Eagles and their chick. Nice clear views and fast to setup. It is a keeper.

Great Glass
I can see 22 caliber holes 260 yds clearly on sunny and cloudy days except if mirage is too high

Full review to follow
Using 20x60 Pentax Zoom Eyepiece. Seems to be a very nice unit. The attachment of the eyepiece makes me wonder about water intrusion. If moisture gets between the main body optics and the eyepiece, would it not effect the vision. I am sure the main body and eyepiece are both individually waterproof. It is the interface I am concerned about. With a one piece scope this is not a concern. One must decide between ruggedness and visual presentation. Minus 1/2 of a star. The glass is extremely bright. I am going to wait until dusk for another test. As I am in the high desert of California, midday, in the middle of summer, it would not be a fair test of imaging. The eye relief is not what I thought it would be. I must remove my glasses to get a lens full view at any magnification. The size of the view is outstanding once I remove my glasses. With my glasses on, only about a 1/3 of the image is visible.:( Minus 1/2 of a star.

Outstanding Birding Scope
This is my 3rd spotting scope for birding - and it is outstanding. I coupled it with the fixed optics Pentax 70516 SMC-XW 20 1.25-Inch Eyepiece that Pentax says produces a 27x magnification and apparent 70 degree field of view. The scope is relatively light (not quite as light as the old Eagle Optics Raven I had before) - comfortable to pack on day hikes. The lighting and clarity thru the scope are excellent - about half the price (or less) than Swarovski or Kowa, and to my subjective eye - equivalent. I wear glasses, and the eye relief (distance between my eyeglasses and the eyepiece for comfortable viewing) is very comfortable. The black rain-weather case that came with it is very durable, and OK - but I would have preferred one with a velcro patch to get the fat 80 mm primary lens cover out of the way. I use a rubber band. And - the bent angle eyepiece end of the cover is OK, but you need the to use the sewn-on snap strap (it comes with) to get it out of the way ... not very elegantly designed. The focus knob at the top moves easily and very accurately - and birds basically pop out with clear colors ... but ducks (for example) moving toward you or away from you you'll need to use the easy focus knob on the top to keep the bird in it's narrow field of view - something I think is common with all scopes of this precision. This is a great scope / eyepiece combo for about $1K total. Fortunately, I had a lightweight tripod already, - and can continue to use that.

Images rival my Skywatcher 80ED
Had this and my Skywatcher 80ED side by side and I was stunned at the visual images. I hit Mars Jupiter and Saturn with both of them and a Pentax 10mm XW and I was floored. Identical and I actually favored the Pentax on Jupiter. Open sky was nice with a 24mm Pan. It won’t replace my SW for astrophotography and higher mags and the prism will certainly make for difficult viewing at zenith angles but it’s nice to know I can take this along and have a nice spotter and light telescope. Wonderful scope. Waterproof no less. I grabbed it on Amazon for under $700 which is a steal for this calibre scope in my opinion. Destroys my 100mm Celestron Ultima even with a 20mm aperture deficit. Crystal clear .223 holes at 150 yards. I mean crystal. Make sure you use a tripod worthy of this scope.

I still like this model and will get another
I can't review the performance of this spotting scope( PF-80ED-A) because I was unable to use it. I could not install my new Pentax 20x60 eyepiece because of a very large dent in the tube the eyepiece is supposed to be installed in.. The protective cover over the eyepiece tube( on the scope) was in place and was not damaged. The finish on this tube was not damaged in any way. My conclusion is that it must have been assembled with this defect being quite visible. There was no damage to the box or packing material. This is not a cosmetic problem. This dent pushed in the rim of the eyepiece opening for a third of the way around the opening and was about 7mm at its widest. So this is not a review of the scope, but of Pentax QC. I still like this model and will get another.

Very good scope, if you get a new one!
This is a very good scope, at least as good as the Opticron it replaced. It is bright, sharp, with excellent optics. It seems very well put together, and has one enormous advantage over most other scopes - it accepts normal astronomical eyepieces. This means that if you do both bird-watching and astronomy, you only need one set of eyepieces. The fitting mechanism for eyepieces is really excellent - quick and well-designed. However, the scope which was sent to me was not new. The seal was broken, and the packaging was damaged inside and out. This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened. So I returned it, and bought it elsewhere.
