Not a perfect replacement for the older B&S 196655GS Control Board

I had installed a Briggs & Stratton 12kw generator in 2009. Recently, my generator lost the excercise function, which I expected was due to a malfunction in the control board. During online research, I learned that the part #196655GS control board in my generator was superseded by part #311353GS. I ordered a replacement control board through Amazon. The 311353GS control board differs from my old board in some respects. First, the new board lacks a port for a service tool, but this was not a major concern as I suspect the associated service tool may be obsolete. Also, the holes for screws to secure the new board appear to be centered about 3/8 inches from the holes in my original board. I drilled new holes in the plastic on which the control board is secured and used new stainless steel screws I purchased. One other minor issue is the new board started the in service hours over at zero, so it does not reflect the current operating hours. Replacing the control board required about an hour, but I could probably do it a second time in 15 minutes or less. The good news is the new control board appears to have restored the exercise function.

Direct replacement. Works great!

I had a customer whose battery charger internal had failed. After running around with Briggs on the phone I went ahead and sourced it somewhere else. This controller is a direct replacement to the old one. The mounting holes aren’t perfectly centered, however, if you start all 4 by hand and slowly run them in with a screw driver, they will all straighten out. Make sure jumpers are set correct and that’s it no lug it in and start the unit. You can not add the old hours to the controller. They start back at zero.

Came very quick and worked!!

I ordered this control board yesterday afternoon and it came this afternoon. Installed it and the generator works once again! I would recommend this seller and this product.

Solved problem on whole house generator

My B&S generator was not starting when power out and had several diagnostic tests (which were expensive) which did not find the cause of the issue. Finally, a field rep for B&S spoke with the company we use for maintenance and suggested replacing this panel and provided a link to Amazon for the part. Long story short the part was installed and generator back to working as it should.

Just what I needed at a reasonable price.

The control panel in my B&S home generator stopped running the exercise cycle and the procedure to set one would not work, so I replaced it with this unit and all is well.

Customer service?

Replaced original control board following the instructions sent with new board. Then the starter would engage for 1 second usually not long enough to start the engine. If the engine did start everything worked correctly. It would take 10 times before it would start not great for auto start stand by. Called the Briggs customer service line and was told I would have to have a service tech come out at my cost before they could do anything. The original cranked till engine started every time was just not reading the hz correctly. Cheaper to buy a second new one and hope that it works correctly than to have a tech out. Could not talk to tech on the phone? Pay them and you can get customer service......
