EASY APPLE SLICES OR FUN SHAPED SALADS ---- BRIEF NOTES ON SLICE THICKNESS, USAGE, & PARTS DURABILITY
MOST METAL AND PLASTIC PARTS ARE SUBSTANTIAL --- BUT STILL WISH SOME PARTS WERE NOT PLASTIC & SOME METAL PARTS COULD BE MORE SUBSTANTIAL A BRIEF PROS AND CONS REVIEW I have wonderful memories as a kid making preserved apples and apple pies with my family using a utensil similar to this that screwed onto a thick wood counter top. Snacking on fresh apple spirals as my mom worked on the crust. Our device back then didn't have the extra options these machines do now. This attachment has substantial feeling parts in terms of it's body and bases, and is an absolute snap to attach and put together. Some parts feel a little less substantial but not necessarily cheap. With all the really fun stuff you can do (Kitchenaid already supplies a lot of photos), you just might even get a finicky child to eat their vegetables in those spirally straw shapes. The metal is fairly thick and sturdy, but there are still some plastic parts and some thin metal by design, and even aluminum in areas you might not expect given other very sturdy parts. Most of the plastic is also quite sturdy though. As you can see, the back end with prongs that stick into the core has plastic spikes and the small skewer feels more like aluminum rather than steel. I worry about those parts in the long run. However, I had no problem with slippage on things such as large apples or potatoes. All the attachments are dishwasher safe though the body is supposed to be hand washed according to the information. It's a great way to change the texture of your food and eat more fresh things. SOME GREAT THINGS MADE EASY -- THINGS YOU CAN DO, AND SOME THINGS YOU CANNOT: --- With quick set up you can start running apples through for storage or apple pies in quick succession. Peel or don't peel while you spiral them through. It's just a matter of sliding the peeler attachment onto the setup. For those who have not used a spiralizer, you do have to cut the spirals down the middle to make them into just slices (after creating the spirals on the machine). That's not a big deal obviously. Whether you are making potato fries, apple pies, or thinner sliced fresh apple or vegetable bags for lunch, this thing makes them easy. --- There is no end of cool things you can make with the spiral straws from vegetables, from unique textured soups to salads your kids might even find fun. I have a spiral potato/onion thing I came up with that is fried like a bloomin onion that I think is awesome! The imagination is the only limit. --- There is a large core slicer and a small core slicer for different sized fruits or vegetables. Those adjust to the size of the core on the front end metal gripper (back end spikes are plastic as I mentioned) and will make a smaller or larger core left over as appropriate. However, they cut roughly the same size thickness of slice and YOU CANNOT ADJUST THE THICKNESS OF THINGS LIKE APPLE OR POTATOTO SLICES. Both the small and large core slicer cut just slightly greater than 1/8th inch thickness. --- As with most spiralizers, it works best when you can make the produce reasonably symmetrical by cutting ends off and any weird large bumps like potato eyes. It is not made for soft, pulpy fruits of course. That seems intuitive, but they actually state that. BRIEF RECAP OF NEGATIVES: Though I love this machine, I don't want to sound unrealistic with points to consider: There are rare parts that seem less substantial despite overall feeling of quality. The thickness of vegetable slices cannot be adjusted. The container box is a bit bulky (this attachment is a little bigger than you might expect), but you can always put that away. The peeler tool takes a pretty thick skin off, so you may feel you are wasting a tiny bit on apples and other thin skinned vegetables, though potatoes are a little more appropriate. There are cheaper options for those not into the Kitchenaid total nexus for the Stand Mixer. FINAL THOUGHTS: In my opinion this is partly about Kitchenaid user ability to replace another kitchen tool and keep it combined in one convenient kitchen tool system. I love having lots of options to attach to my mixer. But truthfully you can accomplish these tasks with a much less expensive tool. It may or may not be as substantial. It may even cut different width slices that this one won't. But if you use the stand mixer already, this is a terrific accessory. One of my favorites actually. It really comes down to what you need in your kitchen and what you want to spend. As I said before, I would feel more comfortable with at least one part being steel rather than plastic. But then more parts of this product are metal than a lot of spiralizers out there so I really can't complain that much. Amazon does not allow inserting links to other company product pages. But if you go to the Kitchenaid web site you can view very slick demonstration videos for this product.

Good to have if you use a lot of veggies
It is a good attachment to have at home. I think it's worth it if you go through a big volume of veggies and fruit. But I use my pasta attachment more often than this one. It is just a matter of personal preference.

Glad I bought it: cut my apple peeling time more than in half
After ignoring this attachment for several years, I read a review which encouraged me and I bought it during the black Friday sales. I purchased mainly for the peeler and though I do intend to use the other blades I have not tried them yet. I make applesauce frequently and I have always manually peeled the apples. Using this attachment more than halved the time it took to peel the apples. All I can say is "wow - glad I got it". My only comment about it is that it takes off rather more of the apples than I would peeling them manually - but the time savings makes it all worth it. The person who said the peeler did not work must have had a defective one - I had no trouble.

I really wanted to love this. I really did. But I don't.
I want to love it, but I just can't. 1) It's ridiculously overpriced. I bought this set for $59.99 at a wholesale club. Still overpriced. Especially since you don't get the fine corer and spiralizer with that, and have to buy that for another $30. So, almost $100 for... 2) A device that I have to use a rubber mallet to install in the accessory hub. Now, I don't have other attachments to compare this with, so this may be an issue with my mixer. That said, I cannot get this to insert into the hole of the hub completely without using a rubber mallet to seat it. Without doing that, the attachment won't seat well enough to tighten the retaining screw. That, of course, results in the attachment flying off. Ask me how I know. Just because of this, it's going back, and I likely won't bother trying another one. Again, this could be an issue withy my mixer itself, but does nothing for me in terms of liking the reliability and quality of KitchenAid (both mixer and attachments.) But there are other reasons to not like this attachment: 3) The peeler is a joke. The peeler on my unit will not peel a potato. It just basically drags across the skin of the potato. It will get a little of the peel in the middle (fattest) part of the potato. Most of the time it doesn't even touch the potato. No, I am not using tiny potatoes. The rest is untouched. The peel it does manage to get, winds up in with the rest of the spiralized stuff, which kind of defeats the purpose of peeling in the first place. It's a lot of fun to pick the peel out of the results. Not. You can put your hand under where the peel is supposed to come out and try to catch it, but... 4) It's rather flimsy. I find I have to sort of steer the blade and vegetable/fruit to keep it centered on the blade and from wobbling around. So that means you need a third hand if you would like to catch the peel to avoid picking out of the food afterward. Or, you could peel your fruit/vegetable by hand first, which sort of obviates the need to drop $100 on a spiralizer that claims to peel but basically doesn't. 5) This set should include the fine blades for $79.99. Which leads me to... 6) Overall quality. This is not $100 ($79.99 + $30.00) worth of quality. The plastic used is rather flimsy and has a lot of give to it. The whole things bobs around more than it should. I have a good old fashioned, hand-cranked apple peeler/corer that cost me less than $20 and it doesn't flail around like this thing does. But then again, it isn't made of plastic. Peeler: as mentioned above, is a joke. Plastic at blade attachment does not feel durable, and I would expect these to fall about with moderate use. If they had put as much attention and quality into the product as they did the packaging, it would be a nice contraption. But, alas, they did not. 7) Obviously, the whole thing is big, and unless you have dedicated space on your counter or elsewhere for your mixer, pulling this out and setting it up with enough room to use is not going to be much fun. If your reason for buying this is to conserve space and not buy a standalone spiralizer, you may not gain anything here. The attachment kit takes up space, and ultimately you may not save any space. Just something to consider. I had hoped to throw all the pieces in a drawer and avoid having to store another kitchen appliance somewhere. Wasn't a huge consideration either way for me, but would have been nice. By the time you get the other two blades, which you are highly likely to want, and find room for all the pieces.... Well... Combine that with the poor quality and construction, cheap plastic, and the high price tag... Yeah. Not so much. The good: 1) I found that despite the ridiculously bad peeler, the actual blades did a good job. Fairly consistent width of product, despite the laxity and wiggling of the attachment, and it produces loooooooooong spirals. 2) Cleans up well. This is likely a relative perception. I own a masticating juicer which has a filter screen that is a real hoot to clean. I could probably be a cleaner for The Mob now. So by comparison, this this is hilariously easy to clean. It really does just pretty much wash right up. I haven't had to pry food out of the blades or anything like that. 3) It's fast, and if you can get it to actually attach to the mixer, is easy to use and tear back down and put away. 4) I didn't have to hand crank. But the poor construction, quality, fidgety-ness, useless peeler, high price, etc., far outweighs the need to crank a manual spiralizer. I was wishing I could just crank. That's about all the good things I can say about it. So, while I really wanted to love this, I just don't. It's going back to the store. The additional blades are going back to Amazon. I am buying the OXO Spiralizer for about $70 less. And then I will probably try to figure out if my mixer has a hub issue or not. All in all, this was an expensive fiasco. Summary: save your money and buy something that is actually decently made and actually works. Update: I contacted KitchenAid customer service and they are swapping out the attachment for me. Decided to go that route instead of returning mine to the wholesale club where I bought it. If this turns out to be an issue with the hub on my mixer, we will have a record of having swapped out the attachment to eliminate that as an issue. KitchenAid rep stated that should it be the hub, they can also assist with that. So, will continue to pursue this avenue. My worry here is that it will wind up costing a boatload of money to repair or replace my mixer, so we shall see. In the meantime, I bought a Briefton's 5 blade spiralizer (model BR-5B-02). It's a little more work to clean, and doesn't have a peeler, but overall, it works well, and includes the 2 mm angel hair blade. For $32, it is coming out ahead as the winner here so far.

Excellent Product
My wife is extremely happy with this product! Amazing functionality, well made, easy to use and to clean! Only issue was the box looked as if it had been previously opened, was damaged and we wondered if the Spiralizer was previously used. We decided not to as there is a tear warrant on the product. The box is also used to store the product so I had to repair the damaged and ripped corners.

Another excellent bolt on.
Very robust and accurate. Easy to use, change sizes of blades easily and easy to keep clean. A few words of advice though........the blades are very, very sharp. Do take care when drying them as I found to my cost the first time I did it!

Not Good at First - Better Now
Purchased this based on all the positive reviews but our experience was anything but. For whatever reason this attachment does not fully seat in the mixer. It takes a lot of effort to get it to go anywhere near where the set screw hole is. When we tighten the set screw it does not go into the divot on the attachment but more on the edge. Start the machine and after a couple of revolutions this attachment works itself loose and drops into the bowl. There is no way my wife has the strength to push this attachment in far enough to get it to be in the right position to tighten the set screw. Heck even I haven't got this strength. We have no issues in this regard with the other attachments we use. We are returning this for a replacement. Hopefully that will solve the problem. You can see on the shaft where there must be some high spots that won't allow it to fully seat. Photos are of the first attachment we received. UPDATE: We returned the attachment to Amazon and they were very quick about getting another one out to us. Much better this time. We put it through it's paces and pretty well cleaned out the fridge spiralling and slicing fruit and vegetables. Works great. Some of the comments on here don't make sense though. People complain about the price but this is the lowest price I've seen anywhere in Canada. Also if you are just two people you may not use this much but then don't buy it or make it an issue of your review. We are only two people and can see a good use for this. It all depends on what you eat.

See video/pictures attached.
The media could not be loaded. We've used a manual hand crank peeler, and then manual corer/slicer for preparing apples for applesauce for years, but wanted to save ourselves some time and effort as we've made larger batches each year. We've also used my KitchenAid mixer for years, but never have tried any of the attachments for it yet, so this was our first attempt at using the KitchenAid mixer for anything aside from mixing. This gadget really saved the day! We had 3 1/2 bushels to peel/core (that's about 170lbs of apples!!). We had them all cored and peeled within about 3.5 hours! The best part is that it cores the apples while it peels/slices them so there is nothing left to do after, and there's virtually no clean up other than the spiralizer itself. The apples end up so thin that they cook very quickly too. The spiralizer comes with: -The frame; the part that holds goes in the mixer -The 'stabber'; for holding the veggies/fruit - Peeling blade; removes/peels outer skin - Corer/spiral slicer; removes core and also cuts into a spiral (see video) - Spiral slicer; cuts into a spiral but does not core (ex for tornado potatoes) - Thick cut spiralizer (finer spirals that the spiral slicer - ex for fettucine size spirals) - Thin cut spiralizer (finest spirals - ex for spaghetti size spirals) Note: The peeling blade can be used with any of the other attachments so that you can peel/core&spiral at the same time. The spiralizer's made of sold steel parts (except for the plastic parts that are used to snap the attachments into the frame). It seems like a pretty solid unit and well made. The plastic is a pretty rigid plastic so I don't think that it will have any issues either, and the attachments all snap in/out of the frame easily so they can be interchanged with no issues. The steel frame goes into the KitchenAid mixer easily and apparently it fits any stand mixer. One design improvement that could be made is that you need to depress a spring clip to bring the blade closer to the item you're peeling and if you're not careful you can get your thumb caught between the attachment. It won't cut you, but it does pinch a bit....so just be sure to keep your fingers out of the spring clip when pushing it forward. Another small thing that would improve the product is if they moved the KitchenAid logo away from the frame arm. This is where a plastic guide moves along the arm, and it is not always the smoothest feel. It would probably be a smoother glide if the logo was repositioned. Few tips: -Grease up the frame (where it says kitchenaid) with a little coconut oil or mineral oil to help the plastic guide slide along the frame while in operation. We'll probably put a fine layer of grease on everything before doing apples again because it does get VERY sticky after using it sugary fruits for a long time. -Watch your finger in the plastic spring clip when pushing the blades forward -Rinse off the parts right away to keep them clean, and do not immerse fully in water -Try to keep the box in good shape when opening the unit since it is perfect to use later for storing it again -I prefer keeping the 'stabber' on the machine and then pushing the fruit onto it, but my husband likes to put the item onto the stabber and then put the stabber onto the machine instead. -If you find the 'stabber' part is digging into the item, it only happens when the mixer is going full speed....then just use the mixer a little slower. -Try to line up the apple with the center of the coring blade when putting it on the machine. Some apples can be a bit sideways, so use the core direction as the guide, not the apple itself. -We preferred to put the apples stem side towards the machine and found that worked best -There's a tiny bit of apple peel left at the top/bottom of the apples which is easily removed just by breaking off that part of the chunk (but we just left it) -Press the corer into the apple a bit so it 'grabs' before starting the machine -The height of the spiral is not adjustable (ie how high each slice is) - only the width of spiral based on which attachment you use Overall this was a huge time saver, and we purchased another one for my mom because it saves so much time and is easy to use. You can see my attached video (sorry the video sideways, no video editing capabilities here...hopefully you get the drift!), and attached picture of the spiralizer in the box. Can't wait to try this on potatoes and other veggies. Would add a nice twist to dishes just to make them a little fancier, and would make cute garnishes for veggie trays etc.
