If you're a fan of card games - this lives up to the hype
I bought Munchkin Zombies and Munchkin Cthulhu as Christmas presents for my sons based on a number of people raving about the game on a social media site. My wife told me I was nuts & these games would end up in our already over-crowded game cabinet. When we first sat down to play the game, I feared my wife was right.... The rules for the game are spread out over a large 6-page fold-out included in the box, and I have to admit - they are somewhat daunting for someone who's never played or even seen the game played. It took us three or four attempts before we really got a grasp of the rules and how the game is supposed to be played. Once I figured out how the game is supposed to work, it seems crazy that we had so much trouble to begin with. I think the "problem" is that there's the overall rules, then there's the cards that are kind of like a subset of rules, then there's the rules you come up with yourself as you play the game. This all makes it possible to play different versions of the same game with different people. All of this is to say - if you pick this game up, stick with it & it'll start making sense after a few attempts. Bookmark the Steve Jackson game forums site & look for answers there on specific issues, if you can't find the answer to your question, the people there are extremely patient and helpful. If you are a beginner - the Zombies set is a very good set to start with - the cards are funny, and it follows the base set of rules (unlike Cthulhu, which has some additional "if/and" rules built in). As a final note - I'm very pleased by the "educational" value of this game. Of course, there's nothing to be learned by the information found on the cards, but the basis of the game is reading comprehension, cause-and-effect relationships, and working with (and against) others to get ahead. We've set "house rules" that state if you say you're playing a card or joining a battle - you're in. This forces everyone to read their cards, survey the situation they're about to get into, and consider the possible outcomes. Long after games end, my kids will bring up individual plays made during the game and we reflect on how they impacted the game - I don't think we've ever had discussions like that about any other games we've played. To wrap this all up, it's a great game - but it does take some effort to get up to speed with the game. The time invested in figuring out the game pays off in the long run - my kids will grow up playing this game.

No packaging!
I love Munchkin but I have to take off a star because my game came to me with no packaging! The game was just sitting bare on my front porch and that is not ok! Beware of you live in and apartment building or something.

very difficult to learn
Unless your child has a lot of patience and is really determined to learn it (maybe because all their friends play it), it is not fun to learn. One of my kids has it figured out, but there is just too many options to keep track of. You try one move and there is a rebuttal to that move and an exception and then an exception to the exception, but only if you have this card and then there are other exceptions and...wow. So, he wants me to play, but he ends up playing my hand as well because it's just too much (and I'm an engineer). I don't find it fun.

The END is just the beginning... of FUN!
The End is Nigh! #Doom... Long time gamers will already know Steve Jackson Games from their long history of RPG wins like TOON and GURPS. Since the wildly successful introduction of SJG's D&D and Magic: The Gathering parody/game system MUNCHKIN there have been many spin-offs, expansions and dips into other non-fantasy genres like The Old West, SuperHero, Vampire, Spy, Zombies, Cthulhu, Pirates, Space and even an official Adventure Time set. You and up to 6 friends (10 year olds to Senior Citizens) can still Kill the monsters (& mutants), steal the treasure and stab your buddy only in... a post-Apocalyptic setting rather than a dungeon. Players still work their way up from level one to see who can reach level ten first. Players progress acquiring bonuses via clean socks, Magnetic Crystal Anti-Monster Bracelet, disaster-proof tents, traffic sign armor, valuable advice from the Internet, ectoplasmic vacuum cleaners and solar-powered radio with Flashlight and duck call while fighting assortments of Ragnarocks, rogue office supplies, Undead Presidents, feral poodles, mutant fire ants, huge hyper-intelligent sharks, Great Octobear and even the dreaded FEMA trailer! Armageddon-styled disaster cards hinder players like the curse cards in other sets, like: Alien invasion, Giant meteors, acid rain, earthquakes and of course Global "Worming." Available to offer further special post-apocalypse abilities are character classes each Munchkin can become like: Bloggers, Scientists, Militia and the Kid class. And what would any good apocalypse be without some Biblical revelation-style seals to open and stir things up, or END them once the Seventh Seal is opened! Combine this set with any other genre of Munchkin and you have another game even. Like basic Munchkin, Munchkin Apocalypse and Munchkin Zombies for an unofficial Adventure Time set.

Great game for the family
Our son loved the original version of Munchkins that we had to try another one. We love it!!!!!!! It’s fun and unique but follows the same basic concept so we don’t have to relearn another game

I bought this to help keep the kids entertained for a few hours while camping and my kids loved it! It is a cute twist on the original. Our children 9+ and up easily played along.
