Easy to handle especially for people with arthritis

Easy to handle especially for people with arthritis. Battery lasts much longer then I have experienced with other salt shakers. Zassenhaus quality is some of the best available, this would be a great wedding or shower gift for someone.

Postmortem review (hint: not what you would expect from the "Made in Germany" label)

This grinder is previously known as the "Zassenhaus Weimar." I have had this grinder for 6+ years and as the title suggests, it is dead now. The switch on top will no longer make contact at all, but it started going bad about 2 years ago. It required pressing the button increasingly harder and at various angles, such that now it no longer works at all. Two years of hard presses also broke the twist lock mechanism on the acrylic base, where the top stainless steel cover latches on (which covers the motor and batteries underneath.) While it worked, it ground well and I never had an issue with the ceramic grinding parts (the only parts that have the 25 year warranty). Now, for the issues: 1. Quite expensive for the first 4 years of trouble free service. That's $20/year. 2. The LED is useless. And why is there an LED to begin with? Are people eating in the dark or in some dystopian future where there is no light? If you are the kind of person that eats in the dark, may I suggest you illuminate your meal with a flashlight instead? 3. It eats AAA batteries at about the same rate as it grinds pepper. 6 batteries per refill. 4. Misleading claim of a 25 year warranty that only applies to the ceramic grinding parts and not to the rest of the grinder, which is much more likely to fail. Update 2018-02-25: While the grinding element *might* be made in Germany, the rest of the body gives me the Made in China for a low price-point vibe. A teardown of the switch reveals the most rudimentary design. Here are the issues as I see them: 1. The switch area is open to the battery compartment - battery acid or other material can easily contaminate the switch. In the attached picture, you can see the corrosion on the rivet that connects the spring in the battery compartment to the anode (-) side of the battery. You can also see a battery acid like material has migrated over the entire surface of the contact. 2. Notice the strip of contact that is suspended by two screws over a hole - there is no support. The button can bottom-out against the base, and with corrosion on the contacts and a yielding bottom contact, it is no wonder it worked poorly. 3. It is hard to tell what these contacts are made from, but it is likely some stainless steel stamped bits. Stainless steel is great for many applications, but for long term durability and resistance to surface corrosion, contacts should be made, minimally, from a silver-base alloy. Given what I found in the switch teardown, I have reduced my review from three to two stars.

Not satisfied

Had these salt and pepper grinders since this past december 2018. Both have already stopped working. Dont be fooled by made in Germany like I was.

Very disappointed.

I bought this pepper mill believing that because it was expensive, you pay for quality. It was immediately apparent that the mill was not man enough for course grinding (which we prefer) and would grind to a halt . Even with fine grinding it was stuttering and yielded little. The batteries did not last a week. We put new batteries in and the mill stopped working altogether. Having returned the mill, it was returned back to us in the same state and no explanation. On inquiring we were told that the batteries we had put in, had leaked and destroyed the motor and therefore we were to blame. We had not had any problem with these batteries before, but even if this were the case, why did the mill not work efficiently with the first batteries used, which were of a superior quality? We are not complainers and have never complained about bought items on the internet before. We have given 1 star, because we believe that at best it was a faulty unit and we should have been given another, and at worst these are very poor pepper mills and we should have been given our money back.

Gute Verarbeitungsqualität, kräftiger Motor - gerade bei der Salzmühle

Nachdem ich nun bereits schon mehr oder minder leidlich diverse elektrische Salz- und Pfeffermühlen in Gebrauch hatte, muss ich sagen: der vergleichsweise hohe Preis für die elektrischen Mühlen von Zassenhaus ist gerechtfertigt. Die Verarbeitungsqualität ist sehr gut, der Motor kräftig, das hört man schon beim Mahlen. Während günstige Modelle sich gerade bei gröberen Salzkörnern hörbar durch"quälen", macht die Zassenhaus-Mühle alles platt, was kommt. Hier kommt der Salzmühle auch - gut durchdacht - zugute, dass sie 6 statt 4 AAA-Batterien und einen entsprechend stärkeren Motor besitzt. Die meisten Mühlen setzen hier nur 4 Batterien und einen schwächeren Motor ein. Die Pfeffermühle setzt tatsächlich nur auf 4 AAA-Batterien, allerdings ist Pfeffer auch weicher und daher arbeitet auch diese Mühle sehr gut. Es gibt keinen trotzdem Größenunterschied zwischen den beiden Mühlen. Sie sind beide etwas dicker als die meisten ("günstigen") Mühlen. Auch das Öffnen des Gehäuses zum Nachfüllen von Salz / Pfeffer oder zum Erneuern der Batterien funktioniert tadellos. Hier habe ich mit anderen Marken bereits schlimme Erfahrungen gemacht. Das gilt leider auch für die Kippmodelle von WMF. Diese wirken zwar auch wertig und haben auch einen ausreichend starken Motor. Der Salzstaub setzt hier aber sehr schnell die Verriegelungsnuten zu und man bekommt die Mühle dann nur noch unter Anstrengung auf - eine ist mir dabei sogar mal angebrochen. Da der Kippsensor ebenfalls schon in 2 Modellen irgendwann defekt war (die Mühle hat auch im senkrechten Zustand weiter gemahlen...) bin ich von diesen Modellen auch wieder weg. Daher hier sehr zufrieden mit den Zassenhaus-Modellen. Einzige Verbesserung, die ich in dieser Preisklasse erwarten würde: es gibt leider kein LED-Licht. Das führt gemessen am hohen Preis bei mir zu einem Stern Abzug.

Ist jetzt nicht so der Knaller

Die Mühle kam in einer für diesen Preis nicht besonders stabilen Umverpackung. Sie ist bereits gefüllt, was völlig sinnfrei ist, da jeder natürlich mit dem Salz, Pfeffer (oder etwas ganz anderem wie z.B. Kümmel) würzen möchte und ganz sicherlich nicht diese Erstbefüllung braucht. Zumal gerade bei der Pfeffervariante das Aroma des Inhalts sicherlich leidet, da die Mühle nicht luftdicht abgepackt ist. So ist auch bei mir der Inhalt komplett ungenutzt in den Müll gewandert. Davon abgesehen macht die Mühle selbst einen einigermaßen wertigen Eindruck. Aber man sollte auch nicht zu viel erwarten. Der Tank für das Gewürz ist relativ klein. Den größten Teil nehmen der Antrieb und die Batterien ein. Warum man bei einem Produkt, dessen Inhalt von außen problemlos erkennbar ist, noch ein "P" und ein "S" prominent neben den Bedienknopf packen muss, erschließt sich nur dem Hersteller. Passt aber spätestens bei der Verwendung anderer Gewürze nicht mehr. Was hier auch fehlt ist ein Verschluss des Mahlwerks. Da die Mühle quasi auf dieser Seite abgestellt wird und diese offen ist, hat man ständig Reste von Salz, Pfeffer, Kümmel usw. im Schrank. Das sollte in dieser Preisklasse eigentlich selbstverständlich sein. Aber am meisten enttäuscht die eigentlich Funktion - das Mahlen. Es kommt dermaßen wenig Gewürz aus der Mühle, das man vom langen Halten über dem zu würzenden Lebensmittel einen Tennisarm bekommt. Das ist einfach lächerlich. Ich habe mir keine elektrische Mühle gekauft, weil die klassische, manuelle Variante schlecht funktioniert hat. Sondern weil einfach z.B. beim Würzen großer Fleischmengen, wenn Gäste ins Haus standen, das Handgelenk nicht immer dankbar war. Aber mit dieser elektrischen Mühle ist es ein Witz. Drei Sterne gibt's nur deshalb, weil ich dem Hersteller zumindest unterstellen möchte, dass das Mahlwerk tatsächlich in Sachen Material und Haltbarkeit dem entspricht, was er behauptet. Ansonsten gäbe es einen Stern weniger. Ich würde dieses Produkt nicht wieder kaufen und ich würde es auch auch niemandem empfehlen. War ein klassischer Fehlkauf.

Schick und hochwertig

Vor 9 Jahren habe ich beide Mühen gekauft und war sehr zufrieden. Die Salz Mühe (öfter im Betrieb) funktioniert immer noch sehr gut. Ok, das Licht geht nicht mehr, ich kann aber sehr gut darauf verzichten. Die Pfeffer Mühle gab vor kurzem wortlos den Geist auf, was nach so langer Zeit nicht ungewöhnlich ist. Ich sehe nur positive Eigenschaften: hochwertige Verarbeitung, edles Edelstahl und kein billig Blech, hervorragendes Mahlwerk mit einer ewig langen Garantie, große Stabilität, durch das Acrylglas kann ich sehr gut sehen, wann die Körner nachzufüllen sind. Ich kann diese Mühlen wärmstens weiterempfehlen und selber würde die immer wieder kaufen.

Für den Preis etwas besseres erwartet

Ich habe sowohl eine Pfeffermühle und eine Salzmühle von Zassenhaus gekauft. Gleich am Anfang fand ich ,dass die Pfeffermühle ewig braucht um Pfeffer zu mahlen. Da war die Salzmühle schon besser. Was direkt auffiel war, dass man die Batterien oft wechseln muss,trotz Marken Batterien seid Februar bestimmt schon drei bis vier mal gewechselt. Wir hatten zuvor eine billig Mühle no name aus China.Die Mühle war genial, hielt aber nur knapp zwei Jahre. Darum habe ich mich nun für ein angeblich hochwertiges Produkt entschieden.Aber diese Mühlen von Zassenhaus sind um Welten schlechter. Die Mühlen brauchen ewig um zu mahlen, Batterien halten maximal zwei Wochen aber nun hat die Salz Mühle ihren Geist komplett aufgegeben,sie macht nichts mehr,trotz neuer Batterien.Und die Pfeffermühle muckt auch schon. Beides geht zurück. Ich werde zukünftig wieder auf manuelle Mühlen zurück greifen.
